I took this to my tasting group tonight and it was resoundingly disliked by all tasters. This wine is Brett affected. It's subtle, but still very noticeable, and really diminishes the quality, flavour and aroma of this wine. A definite thumbs down. Very disappointing given the reviews it has received elsewhere and for the price paid - $70 AUD is not ok for this quality.

    9/28/2023 9:05:00 PM - I don't think you got a representative bottle. I'm also thinking you're mistaking Bairrada sponti (see Lars Carlberg's piece entitled "What's the stink") for Brett. Maybe this wine is a smidge Bretty, but I really don't think so; it is yeasty in a different way, if you ask me. I fear that this wine did not travel to Australia under ideal conditions, and that is perhaps why it was so disappointing for you. My experiences with Filipa Pato always highlight pristine fruit, but I'll also note that even her entry level Dinamica wines typically need many hours of air, if not a day or so, to really open up and blow off their sponti-ish aromas. Hope you have a better Pato experience soon!

Dried cherries, orange peel, apples, airy herbs, a little meaty and spicy... savory and fresh at once, this is for food, i would say liberally herbed roast chicken.

To me this wine is pure happiness and when I drink it I find it nearly impossible to focus my mind on the tasting notes that I am experiencing. What I am struck with is more of a feeling of overwhelming pleasure that leaves me feeling all warm and fuzzy.
This delicious elixir had a wonderful tingle of acidity on the light and pure frame of cape gooseberry and tangy apples.
That is all I can put together in terms of notes. But I can say that this is like butterflies dancing on your tongue. A wine that speaks to the heart of pleasure and makes you happy to be alive.

Excellent Barolo normale.
Quite shy in the beginning, it strted to blossom after 30 mins in burgundy glass.
Purity and elegance were on display with bright, floral, cherry, balsamic aromas.
It was drinking exceptionally well for its level. A re-buy

quick taste, but this is clearly top notch Rioja...

aromas of cherry liqueur, black raspberry, red licorice, diverse airy spices, vanilla, hints of cola, violet liqueur, and marzipan

almost full-bodied, dense and tightly wound, layered and textured, borderline silky but the tannins need a little time to integrate, overall the tannins are very fine, darker fruit on the palate than on the nose, it is somehow quite fresh and elegant and sticks out as something a little different in the context of "traditional" Rioja

long finish, and here there are some notions of the tertiary notes that will come in time (tobacco, warm spices, stewed meat), but this is clearly on the young side, with exuberant fruit at the fore. I would decant this for many hours, though it's not really so tight that you would need to do that.

Ordered two bottles with dinner at Jaleo in Washington, D.C.
Classic Rioja, starting with a burst of toasty American Oak on the nose and the attack on the palate. Mid-palate is more savory and herbal than fruity, and is deep and pleasing. A great match to the panoply of tapas dishes that we ordered. I really enjoyed these bottles though overt American Oak is not really in my normal wheelhouse - high quality Rioja is an exception. Should improve for many years as the oak integrates, though it is in a good drinking window right now, if you can appreciate the oak treatment.

    9/12/2023 3:02:00 PM - I'm 99% certain Remelluri doesn't use any American oak these days, but they do apparently have quite a variety of oak vessels in the mix for this wine: French, Slovenian, Hungarian, large, medium, small, new and old... I'm under the impression that they don't want any American oak at all in the mix, but I guess I can't be 100% sure. This 2015 is, however, quite spicy on the nose and finish, and so much Rioja is strongly marked by American oak, so I can see where you're coming from...

From a bottle that was decanted yesterday and the rest (about 1/4 of the bottle) returned to the bottle, which was then brought to me tonight.

Aromas of dark plum, red and black cherry, violets, licorice, cedar, spice drawer... velvety and smooth, tannins are fine despite their significant clout, dense and layered mid-palate, lots of dark fruit and spice through the finish. Long and intense, this has clearly suffered no deleterious effects after so much air. No doubt that its plateau is 10+ years away. With a great vintage like 2016, Sesta di Sopra's Brunello ages at a glacial pace; 2006 is not quite ready, and 2010 is probably still a decade away from full maturity.

In general, I tend to avoid saving Brunello from hot vintages like 2011; best to have them young, and with red meat. That being said, I've had some very nice mature 1997 and 2007 Brunello over the years.

Hard to say what the "peak" drinking window will be for this one, as the fruit is so exuberant right now, and one could argue that it will not get better. It will probably still be a really interesting in wine in 10 years, but that fruitiness will have changed, and some may see that for the better but others will have preferred it young. Hard to say when you should drink it, but if you have a more than one bottle I would drink one in the next few months. I'll torture myself about saving my last two bottles, but I'll try to keep one for beyond 5 years from now.

I don't agree with other tasters that this is underripe. If anything, I think some very ripe grapes made it into the blend, as there are clear raisined and cooked qualities to the fruit, but it does have some green notes that are pretty typical of Pinot, and it is certainly tart. The 2018 vintage was probably tough unless you were very selective, and I'm thinking Jouan threw in some less than perfect grapes.... I still like this quite a bit.

This was pretty rough yesterday, smelling like pond and rust, but today it has shaped up a little and smells like jellied black fruits, wet dog, pine needles and purple vitamins. Tart, light, and straightforward, but I'm loving its honesty, and if there's a typical Morey character, I think this has it. For early consumption, I would not save it more than a few years.

It's a puzzling wine, as it is super tart and earthy, but I also thought it had signs of shriveled grapes. It could be that Jouan harvested early to try to avoid the worst effects of the torrid vintage, but I still feel like the extreme heat comes through.

A little smoky and reductive at first, but it opens up beautifully with air. This is one of my favorite styles: herbal, earthy, ethereal, just the tiniest bit sweet. Diverse citrus juice and pith notes, wild herbs, white flowers... tense and nervy, just a hint of soothing sweetness. Delicate and quite herbal. Lovely!

This is really too serious to be opening now, but I love Alessandria and I have been dying to give this, their iconic wine, a try. Dark and brooding, and slow to open, but it does show very well tonight. Aromas of red and black cherry, blue plum, the fruit element is intense and borderline jammy, this is quite ripe, plus lots of non-fruit intrigue including violets, dry pine forest, and whispers of mint, peppercorns and licorice... Thick and velvety on the palate, it has great structure in deep plush tannins and a clear vein of powerful acidity. It is unyielding on the mid palate, but the finish bursts with flavor, so many ripe fruits and spices lingering very long. Not as tight as I thought it might be, but this is obviously more than a decade away from its peak.

It is tons of fun. I have never seen mags of any Alessandria except at the winery, so I know they exist, but are perhaps quite rare.

I love the wines of V Paris, but this is throwing me for a loop. There is a ton of VA, and at moments I am just not finding this at all pleasant.... aromas of rotting plum and cherry, wilted flowers, crunchy blackberry, petrichor, peppercorns... thick and tangy, rather sour, finishes long and spicy, and it is here that it redeems itself, but this just seems off, I dunno

Smoky and a bit stinky tonight. Aromas of peach juice and peach skin, apricot, honeysuckle, apple jelly, spice, black tea and minty herbs. Richly textured and luscious, with honeyed and floral inner perfume to match its sweet fruit. This feels like it'll be cloying at first, but it turns quite elegant and mineral on the finish. The finish is gorgeous, with plenty of lifted herbal and floral stuff lingering alongside sweet fruit and delicate honey, integrated electric acidity wends its way through all the richness carrying filigree nuance long. This is brilliant Spatlese. Way too young, but I really wanted to try some Grunhaus 2019 soon.

Ethereal and peppery, this is so much fun. Reductive and a little smoky, this element mostly blows off and integrates with all the other stuff. Aromas of peppercorns, blood orange, red plum, strawberry, iron, fennel seed, dry autumn meadow, rosehips, a little roasted and charred something or other.... there's plenty of mystery and intrigue here. Fresh and lively on the palate, light to medium in body, very mineral and herbal, very dry but not so tannic, lots of tart juicy fruit, but gentle acids, subtle satin textured, there is great balance and such character. Lingering notes of blood orange and herbs are delicious, but the clear and present minerality, a pure chorus of rocks, is utterly intoxicating. This is like some kind of sunny red Muscadet. It is awesome.

I'm not 100% certain this will be better after time in the bottle, as the reductive element is strong and I'm not sure where that will go. It is intense and balanced, however, so if the reduction doesn't get in the way, this will surely develop positively for many years. It's a weird one, that's for sure.

Pretty and ethereal nose of vanilla, almond extract, underripe strawberry, green apple, lemon, white flowers and a hint of toasty cereal. Fresh and mineral, a clean acid line drives everything. Medium in body, there's subtle chalky grip, and a touch of citrus pith. This does not impress with weight or significant texture, but it has sneaky concentration and lingers beautifully. Finishes tart and mineral, with pure lemon and apple notes, and a moderate amount of oak spice and creaminess. I'm not sure this will be worth saving for more than a few years, but right now it is easy-going and quite indicative of its origins. Tastes like a nice Meursault to me!

This wine is not especially serious, but it comes from a very warm vintage and I did not expect grandeur. Fine-boned and refreshing, as Chardonnay goes it will be easy to work with at the table. I think saving one for next summer for grilled sea bass would be a great idea. I'm impressed. There's gonna be plenty of 2018 Meursault that is more expensive and far less balanced.

I'm a little unclear on where exactly these vines are located, but apparently somewhere above or within Perrieres. One account I read places them as in Perrieres, but I think that is not the case. There's a Meursault map that has a parcel labeled Les Chaume des Perrieres that is contiguous with Genevrieres and colored in the same hue as the premier crus. Is this the location? I dunno

Yum! Juicy and fresh Barolo. Aromas of strawberry, red cherry, red plum, ripe peach, brown spice, licorice, dried mushrooms, desiccated autumn meadow and roses. Juicy and firm at once, with notions of dark fruit on the palate, as well as the fruits discerned on the nose. Also more savory on the palate than on the nose, with a little tar and pan drippings on the finish. This is quite open now, but the best will come in 5 to 10 years. It will no doubt be doing fine in 15, but perhaps will have peaked before then. Wouldn't be surprised if it is singing hits at 20+. One would not argue that it is the best of Barolo, but given its stature and price, it is a veritable monument for the region.

    12/13/2020 7:51:00 PM - I think Vajra keeps improving, pushing the envelope of inspired Barolo, keeping it fresh and focused on the great fruit they grow. Their Albe has always been worthwhile but a few recent vintages have really proved that this wine is a serious contender. It really seems to speak as clear snapshot of the region: aromatic, powerful, fresh, firm, distinctly Nebbiolo... love it, and such a deal. There are others that compete as incredible values, but are not so inexpensive: Cordero di Montezemolo, Oddero, Cantina del Pino, Diego Conterno, Fratelli Alessandria, Produttori... so much good Nebbiolo these days, but Vajra still stands out!
