4/14/2024 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRAdding this as a data point, since my experience was much different than the note below, perhaps because the wine has put on weight in the intervening months. This is among the inkiest 12% wines I’ve come across. The contrasts are pretty remarkable: broad and expansive and rich but light on the palate. The nose fantastic and evolves: blood, iron, black olive tapenade, lavender, white pepper, blackberries, roast meats. No decent; drank over three hours. Great wine. |

2/25/2024 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NROpened impetuously after a 2017 Gevry Chambertin VV underwhelmed. Initially tart cranberry and vanilla on the nose but after 30 minutes settled into dark cherries, crushed strawberries, dirt, baking spices, and orange peel. Really enjoyable but glad I have a few left. This will really shine, I suspect, in about 5 years or so. |

2/11/2024 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRAgree with the note below, though the nose is more expressive now. Strikes me as a very well made wine from good, not great grapes. Really enjoyable. QPR is uncertain. |

1/27/2024 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRThis is in a great spot now. Cherry liqueur, dried strawberries, roses, licorice, some orange peel, white pepper, and a distinctive menthol/camphor note that is characteristic of the site. The nose is immediately appealing but the palate needs some time to come together. Initially it’s quite tannic and acidic. But it integrates after about an hour and obviously rewards food. This wine is 15 years from vintage, but I really doubt it’s at its peak. |

12/25/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRNo formal note. Just wanted to signal how primary and tightly coiled this is, and how little it moved over three days. It’s delicious but really needs time. |

8/12/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRReally a lovely wine; I’m shocked there aren’t more CT holdings. Pours a brilliant gold. Wonderful mix of honeysuckle, ripe apples, and lemon pith. Strong acid and texture. Will obviously age and a steal at $28 or so. |

2021 Fratelli Alessandria Verduno Pelaverga Spezialemore |
8/7/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRNot profound, but really enjoyable. Strawberry, cranberry, cherry, light peppercorn, and a streak of licorice. Surprisingly persistent tannin and great acidity. So easy to drink now, but I think this could be interesting with a bit of age, too. 13.8 ABV. |

8/6/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRNo proper notes, but was a consensus favorite in a tasting of 2018 California Chardonna. Rich, but balanced with acidity. Really delicious. |

5/28/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRReally enjoyed this, and not so sure it’s as varietally nonobvious as most of the motes below suggest. It has the dark purple fruit of the Cabernet, the rich plums of the Merlot, and the (really delightful) pyrazines of the Cabernet. It starts a bit lean, reflecting the 13.3 ABV, but it broadens with two or three hours of air. I think this will mature into something really wonderful. |

5/27/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRNo detailed notes, but this was really lovely. Many of the notes below are right on for my palate. Lemon, citrus, white flowers, slight honey, flinty matchstick reduction, but also a certain presence, a a concentration on the palate that stood up really well with food. This is a really well made wine: from a great vineyard, but also a very talented winemaker. |

4/8/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRHoney, acacia, peach, yellow apple, a bit of smoke on the nose. Pleasant, not bracing acidity, which suggests some aging potential. The 14% alcohol peaks out a touch on the finish, but not obtrusive. Better, to my palate, than the notes below suggest. A fine value for $30, and strong enough to make me curious about the Il Montino cru. |

2015 Montevertine Toscana IGTSangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more |
3/12/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRDecanted for 45 minutes and drank over a few hours. Among the striking things is how much fresher and less evolved, especially given the warm vintage, than a 2015 Felsina Rancia from yesterday. Perhaps unsurprisingly, strikingly reminiscent of a 2019 Le Boncie Le Trame from a few weeks ago. Cool red and purple fruit, brown spices, sweet herbs, lavender, cedar. With air, just ripe cherries. The tannins aren’t so aggressive. This seems to just be entering its drinking window, but I wouldn’t touch again for another few years. It shows almost no signs of age. |

3/11/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRThis needed about 45 minutes in the decanter to come together. The nose was delightful from the first pour: dried cherry liqueur, sweet thyme, tobacco, brown spices, leather, cedar. Firm, grippy tannins, which are pretty drying on the finish. The acid backbone one would expect from Rancia, even in a warm vintage. In its drinking window, depending on one’s taste for tannin. I have two left, and I think I’ll wait another five years or so before touching. |

2/5/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRDelicious. A combination of honeyed peach, lemon, and a saline minerality. Tightly coiled, really vibrant acidity, textured. Enjoyable now with food, but this almost feels like infanticide. Its peak drinking window would probably be seven to eight years from vintage. |

1/1/2023 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRReally fantastic. Lemon curd, slightly honeyed, a bit of lemon oil, sort of a light creamy sensation on the nose. Paired wonderfully with Daniel Humm’s roast chicken. Delicious now, but I would love to revisit in a decade or two. |

12/30/2022 - blcarter3 Likes this wine: NRFantastic, and perhaps even the standout among the Matthiasson whites. Citrus, salty, a bit honeyed after 24 hours open. Paired brilliantly with braised chicken with lemon, thyme, and capers. |

2018 Podere Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione Alta Valle della Greve IGTSangiovese more |
11/24/2022 - blcarter3 wrote: NRI generally agree with much of what’s been written. After a 2017 Istine CCR Le Vigne, this felt pretty extracted and with nontrivially less acidity. The alcohol was a bit conspicuous too. Two very different representations of Chianti Classico, though, for my taste, I much preferred the Istine. I think the Il Carbonaione would benefit from a longer decant. |
