Wednesday Nebbiolos (Gino's, Portland OR): There was a bit of VA on the nose at first. We poured off a bit and let it open up into savory tones of rose petals, roasted herbs, sour red cherries, raspberries, violets, tobacco leaf, crushed rocks, earth notes and black truffle notes. There is some lovely perfume to this with some excellent layering at this point. The Full bodied feel is deft and balanced with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is in a really beautiful place right now. There is a bit of primary fruit to the nose, but that first wave has peeled back and into something perfumed. The structure still has some youth and there is clearly plenty of gas in the tank, but it is absolutely worth opening a bottle now.

This is in a great spot now. Cherry liqueur, dried strawberries, roses, licorice, some orange peel, white pepper, and a distinctive menthol/camphor note that is characteristic of the site. The nose is immediately appealing but the palate needs some time to come together. Initially it’s quite tannic and acidic. But it integrates after about an hour and obviously rewards food. This wine is 15 years from vintage, but I really doubt it’s at its peak.

Decanted for 2 hours before consumption. Soft red brownish color. Red fruit and floral on the nose. Silky, soft and smooth entry on the palate with enticing and seducing red fruits laced with rose pedals, spice, strawberries with a magic hint of sweetness supported by fresh acidity, fine and softening tannis in a fine structure. The finish is long and interesting. It is in a well drinking window now.

In a word: excellent. Opened a couple hours before dinner. This wine is completely ready. Dark and mature aromas and flavors. Decent acidity and light but evident finishing tannin keep it lively. Went great with baked ham. I would probably open my last Muncagota before tapping the Paje, Pora or Magnifico.

Really nice tart cherry acidity, tannins nicely resolved, very enjoyable. Good with food.
