Nice dark fruit and vanilla with a short finish and moderate to low complexity. Enjoyable for a weeknight sipper.

Very young and tight, it open considerably after sitting for a while. Nice nose with deep tones. Very light tannins, some leather and fruit, not very complex. Short finish.

A blend of Cab. Frnac Merlot, Tannat and Touriga that leaves me wondering why I ever buy a wine with Touriga in it. Oh, b/c my wife likes it. Medium bodied with little to show for it. A “nice” wine that doesn’t speak to me. 13% alc. With left over hanger steak.

Medium to full bodied with nice balance and mouthfeel. Cherries, licorice and earth on the palate. Did not overpower roast chicken, but could imagine it being just as good with beef.

Deep Ruby, pronounced intensity with primary notes of black fruit (currant, black cherry, black plum), secondary notes of spicy cedar and mild charred oak. Palate is dry, medium acid, full body, prononced primary and secondary flavors, with a long finish. A very good to outstanding wine. The tannins are silky and, thankfully, feels and appears not to have been filtered. Drank over three nights and the last night was the best - yes, should wait another year or two to open the next one.

At 1/3 bottle per night, I could feel the effects of the alcohol. This all surprised me for a VA cab sauv, especially for the declared 14.8% ABV (it may actually be higher).

Alas, it is from La Cienega vineyard in in Alexander Valley and although I liked it now, it should do well for the next five years or more. At $37 at the winery it is priced about right - a good value with club member discounts, and especially when included in the monthly wine club offering. Glad I have another - look forward to acquiring a few more.

This is a sophisticated wine that benefits from the minimum intervention characteristic of VA winemaking, making it much more authentic to the grapes than had it been manipulated in CA.

Bright with rich tannins and a nice dark red color in the glass. Hints of strawberries and black berries with some acidity for balance. A nice wine for cheese.

This is my first syrah from Virginia. First tasted at the winery and was impressed enough to buy three bottles to cellar at home. It's very unique, has some basic characteristics of syrah - the pepperiness, primarily. Somewhat tannic, with a dry finish. Decent fruit on the nose and palate. Paired well with, of all things, hot dogs. Good aging potential of 6-8 years if properly cellared. This bottle was consumed after 9 months in storage.

The wine looks inky colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It tastes like blackberry, blueberry, medium toast, violet, tobacco and eucalyptus. The body is full. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

This was really perfect for PnP with beautiful fruit and all the attractive qualities of Va terroir. But then I decanted it for about 1.5 hours (which seemed like the right choice because the tannins were still fairly tight) and it wasn’t as good. The fruit flavor dissipated and turned more plummy and the tannins became more bitter. I get velvety chocolate, graphite, espresso, mashed blackberries, faint hints of strawberries, plum, violet, allspice, vanilla, Virginia bell pepper and red clay (but in a good way here), and red bricks (imagine licking a brick and getting the mineral taste). This is a very pretty wine that was almost great. If I had another go at it, I would drink it sooner than 9 years and as a PnP. It needs a simple, light palate for the food pairing. Chicken worked better than smoked duck breast.

I actually liked this better on its own than with food. Pretty impressive for a Va Cabernet Sauvignon, which is not necessarily the best grape for the climate. This was worth the $65, but it also doesn’t make me think, “I need to buy more high end Va Cabernet.” Let’s see how it compares to some upcoming California and Bordeaux wines.

Best in Zalto Bordeaux glass.

Rich murky purple with dark purple edge in color. Nose of blackberry jam, espresso and a hint of foxiness. On the palate: red berries and a hint of cocoa. Tannins are plush...holding the wine in balance, but unobtrusive and perceived only slightly on the gums. Long, persistent finish of sour cherries and sweet tobacco. Very well delineated and tremendously enjoyable.

PnP. Opaque, inky purple with dark magenta edge in color. Nose of cassis, brambleberry, graphite, violets and espresso. Palate: Intense brambleberry, vanilla and graphite. Sweet, green tannins are very fine-grained and are perceived on gums. Long finish of black fruit, vanilla, cinnamon & sandalwood. Wine is in a really good spot right now.

PnP. Inky purple with dark red edge in color. Nose of black currant, brambleberry & saddle leather. On the palate: blackberry compote, cassis and notes of sweet tobacco peeking through towards the finish. Fine, sandy tannins are well integrated; perceived on gums and only somewhat on cheeks. Long finish of brambleberry, sweet tannin, vanillin, pyrazine and a subtle river rock salinity.
