3/14/2014 - Joesap Likes this wine: NR

Grade: VG+. Malbec, Syrah, Bonardo, Cab blend. Deep violet color, nose of ripe red fruit, cranberries, cherries, vanilla. This is an elegant and structured wine with plush dark fruit flavors, some minerality, robust but integrated tannins, but with a too-short finish. A bit young now, give it at least a year.

My Grade: EX. This Argentinian Chard. takes a good tilt at some of the better 1er Cru Burgundies out there. Pale straw color, lychees, creme brûlée, fresh hay and toasted oak on the nose. On the palate: smooth, buttery entrance, that develops into complex pear, gooseberry and lemon-peel with great mineral drive on the mid-palate, well-balanced acidity and well-integrated oak. Finish is long and spritzy with citrus peel (see my profile for grades)

My Grade: VG-. This was better after 24 hours with cork in bottle. This is a heavily extracted, almost port-like blend of unknown varieties, but I would guess Cabernet and Malbec, might be too young to judge fairly. Deep mauve, nose of alcohol, dried plums, medicinal notes. Intense heat, some black and red fruit, bitter but smooth tannins, sour berry, slightly metallic finish with raisin notes. I can see why some might rate it highly on a tasting, but it is too OTT for my palate.

Grade: G+. Dark, opaque, inky-Mauve in the glass, as any good Melbec should be. Nose: quite timid with dark fruit, prunes, vanilla, coal-tar and some vegetal/green notes. Palate: muted, blueberries, blackberries, some pepper, decent finish with low, smooth tannins and still some acidity. Very low-key for a Mendoza Malbec, may be past its prime.

My Grade: VG+. Very acidic at first, but transformed with 3 hours air. Deep black cherry color, complex nose of cherries, plums, cassis, menthol, black pepper, earth, slight funk. Rounded and smooth on the palate with plums, blue-black fruit, silky tannins, not much structure, medium, juicy, finish. Not so exciting, but pleasant and very drinkable.

Grade: EX-. Dug this one out of the cellar (last bottle from my trip to Argentina). I really enjoyed this refined marriage of malbec and cab and it still has a lot of life left in it. Gave it a couple of hours air, nose of blueberries, cassis, flint, wet earth, leather, some funk, silky smooth mouth feel, nicely integrated black and blue fruit, some lead pencil notes, juicy acidity and very fine tannins provide refined and elegant structure, nice juicy berry finish of good length. Need to get my hands on more of this, although I may have to return to Argentina as they don't appear to export any.

5/3/2014 - Joesap wrote: NR

Grade: G. It was intriguing to try a Pinot from Patagonia, on paper it should have the ideal climate for this varietal. Nose was quite astringent: tar, burnt rubber, wet pavement and blackcurrant with some vegetal notes. At first, the palate was very promising, offering subtlety and complexity but became very jammy (raspberry) and one-note with air. Like a lot of New World Pinots, this lacks minerality, personality, finesse and complexity. Not bad, but not great value.

Grade: EX. This is a big, serious wine. Very deep purple, black fruit, dried plums, vanilla, tobacco notes on the nose, intense black fruit on the palate with dark chocolate and sour cherry notes, juicy mid, tremendous structure, firm and well integrated tannins, very long, sour fruit finish with burnt toast, cedar and tobacco notes. Could be more complex, but at this price, who would complain?

My Grade: VG+. This is big and bold enough to keep lovers of Aussie Shiraz happy while maintaining enough structure and complexity to win- over some Old World oenophiles. Dark, dusty, mauve, nose of vanilla, strawberry sherbert, cherry jam and some barnyard notes, big, jammy red and black fruit on the palate, rounded tannins, well balanced acidity and juicy, long finish of sour cherries and orange peel. Good bang for the buck.

My Grade: EX-. Zweigelt in this treatment evokes a very Burgundian experience, with a dash of Hermitage. Color: slightly dusty cherry in the glass. Nose: cherries, raspberries, spice, black pepper, cola. On the palate: light-bodied, tart cherries, cola, bacon, black pepper, fine-lined acidity, great minerality on the mid-palate, fine-grained tannins, medium sour-cherry and cranberry finish. This is a superb food wine and would pair well with anything from white-fish (fried) to game (venison) and it is the perfect foil for Pork: very satisfying.

On the palate: extremely well balanced acidity, very focused, with bright notes of sour cherries, rhubarb, limes, lead pencil, medium, grippy minerality on the mid-palate and a really long sweet and sour cherry finish. Great Pinot from the Colchuaga valley and outstanding QPR. Chile is showing great strides with Pinot Noir.

My Grade: O+ . It would be really something to find a 95/100 wine for just $9.95, but in the case of this wine, that is just fantasy. The bottle indicates 14% alcohol, but I would estimate it is 15.5%+. Unfortunately, the high alcohol dominates everything else and makes this almost undrinkable right now. The nose is far better than the palate (dark blue and black fruit, some bell pepper and spice), let's just leave it at that. This may be a duff bottle, but I can only report what is there. You can get a far better drinking experience from a wine like Castillo de Monseran Garnacha (Spain) for $2 less. There are also other Chilean Cabs in this price range that do not burn your tongue, I would try one of those

Add: 3 days after opening, this is more drinkable after most of the excess alcohol has burnt off: fairly thin with bitter tannins.

My Grade: EX+. Very classy and impressive Cab. from Chile which should appeal to Left-Bank Bordeaux fans. Decanted for 1 hour, very deep mauve, almost black. Fairly shy nose of cassis, plum-sauce, licorice, mint, bell pepper. Palate offers delicious, focussed, slightly jammy black fruit, cherries, dark chocolate, black pepper, focussed and juicy mid-palate, silky smooth and sweet tannins, perfectly balanced acidity, super-long finish with sour black fruit. Wonderful now, should improve over next couple of years and have a long drinking window (see my profile for grades).

Grade: O. Not sure how this made a WS Top 20 list. Nose has decent dark fruit: blackberries, current-jam (with an odd whiff of Deisel), this comes through on the palate but too hot and too much acidity to be enjoyable on its own and doesn't stand up to food all that well (pizza in this case). There are much better South American Reds out there in the $10-$12 range (Los Vascos Grande Reserve being an obvious example ).

My Grade: VG. Better on 2nd day after vacuvin. Deep, opaque Mauve in the glass, watery rim. On the nose: somewhat funky, red plums, blueberries, camphor with green bell pepper/gasoline which is a little off-putting but fairly common for Chilean reds. Palate: plush mouth-feel, fairly simple blueberry, back plum, blackcurrant. Medium acidity, slightly hollow mid-palate, fine, chewy tannins, thin, fairly short finish. There are better Malbecs at this price. (see my profile for grades).

My Grade: VG. A huge improvement on the last bottle. Still pretty hot, but much better balance and structure, firm but smooth tannins, good, intense black fruit and no residual sugar. Should last another 4-5 years. Still has that Chilean diesel/funk on the nose, but a very acceptable bottle which has restored my faith in the label. Watch out for large bottle variation.

This tastes like it has been designed to please Supermarket shoppers.

My Grade: VG+. 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet. After about 3 hours this opened up with fruit to the fore, this is a very nice everyday wine that can be enjoyed now and for the next 4-5 years. Medium, opaque purple. Fairly mute nose of black fruit, spice, vanilla, lead pencil. Delicious, fruit-forward palate with cherries, strawberries and blackcurrant, silky tannins, fresh acidity, fairly short but pleasantly tart finish. Right-Bank Bdx looks like it has produced some really great values from the 2015 vintage and this is a steal for the price.
