Palate follows, fruit still in the background, good balance of tannin and acid, smoke and earth prominent. Complex and beautiful. One of the best California Grenaches I've tested. |

Palate adds some fresh blackberry and tart stone fruit, big gravelly tannins. Mouth-watering acid comes in with the mid-palate. Cries out for some rich food, cassoulet, sausage, duck. It's great fun, not sure where it will go from here - it's only eight years old, but can there be any upside further down the road? I have one more and will wait another year or two to drink it, but I'm inclined to say drink up. |

I was concerned that the fruit would fade after resting for 20 years, but it did not. Day two was the same as day one. The wines weight was similar to a Burgundy. No bricking and medium bodied. Now for the surprise: day three the wine turned into a big Bordeaux style wine. I could not believe the weight took on. Simply gorgeous. I would have guessed a 1986 Saint Julian. No sign of eucalyptus, just pony barn, leather, cassis, and tobacco. I wish I had another bottle. |

Decanted for three hours needed just a bit more, as there were some very fine, grippy tannins, but another hour later and with grilled steak it was absolutely perfect. Wine of the year for me to this point. Someone below must have had a bad bottle or it was far too young. Weird disparity between the notes on this one, but I can assure you, it is fantastic. |
