2008 Cillar de Silos Ribera del Duero

NobleRottersSydney - Spanish Acquisition (Alio's, Surry Hills): [14.5%, cork, A$75] Here’s an authentic, older-style spanish red. Developing aromas of tobacco and leather, not without some mulberry fruit but also some blood, compost and bitumen. Palate is similarly rich in flavour, with intense meaty flavours and blueberry fruits. Solidly medium-bodied, with medium chalky tannins, an even palate and a medium length finish. Has plenty of heft without being a bruiser or bomb-style of wine. From old vines, and aged in larger 600l casks. At the same price as the Rodriguex M2 there’s no contest; this has far greater depth and interest. Clearly the pick of the nights’ reds using the value-for-money criteria.

I was disappointed. Expecting soft, luscious fruit I found it to be harsh and forgettable. Perhaps needed time.

decanted 2 hours.
nose: graphite and smoke hovering above black cherry and blackberry fruits.
palate: a little sour, with slightly flat fruit. Not much going on right now. Tannins are well-placed, but fruit doesn't quite back it up. Chalky finish ... not sure what is going on here or how I feel about this wine. Finishes with a bit of weird spice. At $26, this makes me too uncomfortable to recommend.

decanted 4 hours: nose has transformed to papery rotten celery. Really odd, and not necessarily inviting. Fruit is trying to come through on the palate, but it's a losing battle. PASS.

Deep ruby/garnet color. Aromas of spice, smoke, dried fruit, blackberry and baked strawberry jam which carries over to the palate with additional notes of blackberry leaves, pepper and rasberry. Well balanced and drinking well.

Some notes of graphite, leather and spice. Not much fruit. Wonder if this is moving past prime. Have had several bottles of this and there seems to be some inconsistency despite purchasing at same time and place.

Deep ruby color. Not much on the nose other than forest floor and some cedar. Well balanced and improving. Bright fruit (strawrberry, raspberry and a bit of blueberry) on the palate. Well balanced lingering finish.

Cillar de Silos makes multiple levels of Tempranillo that get greater in quality and more expensive as you move up the ladder. But their introductory wine, here bought at $15 a bottle, is no slouch and even improves for at least a decade The 2001 Crianza was utterly charming, rich, delicious, and enjoyable even on release. This decently concentrated 2007 started more tart and firmly structured , and took a decade to get really good. Excellent red cherry fruit with both the acidity and tannin nicely rounded, and no sign at all of any decline with age.

This introductory Ribera del Duero of Cillar de Silos is one of my nominations for the highest quality among value Tempranillo wines. This winery makes multiple tiers of wines that are not only more expensive but even better. At 10 years old, this wine has dramatically leaped in quality by superbly aging, becoming lushly softer, more delicious, and integrated, yet still well structured by background acidity and tannin. Overall, getting close to rivaling the great Crianza Cillar de Silos made from the 2001 vintage.

Poured right out of the bottle, the wine initially suffered from a sour acidity and a lean streak of astringent tannin. But the second day open the wine was reborn, with a darker color, deeper black cherry fruit, much calmer acidity, and rounder mouth feel, while retaining a firmly drying finish. Excellent with a wide range of foods. Thoughly enjoyable on day 5 of being opened. At $15 a bottle, a fine benchmark for Ribera del Duero wines to have to beat in order to justify any higher price.

Medium deep crimson. Ripe nose with savory character, some vanilla and mineral. Medium concentration - honest, from a difficult vintage. Best as it was opened and carried through the meal, but dried out after 2 hours. Fair and enjoyable, but nothing to write home about - the angularity at the end of the bottle marred the whole.

This opens with basic plummy fruit, minor baked licorice and a lifted red floral quality. Overall the fruit is not complex but enjoyable. In the mouth it's medium weight, still bright with light tannin and a slightly unsettled feel although it's very together and just needs a bit of time to work out the kinks. That said, because of the lack of complexity, I don't see this as a cellar candidate. Overall, solid, now, good basic drinker.

Cellared at 14C. Cork completely preserved. Opaque dark garnet with pale men icons and many leggs. Faint nose of blackberries and possibly currants. Smooth on the palate with a long textured finish Enough structure far a year more or two but fruit likely fading.

soft black and blue fruits. Very bitter edge though tannins have softened overall. Spicy and alcoholic though not overpowering. This has come together nicely.

A nice wine from the year of the heat. A deep ruddy hue for the eye. The nose encounters vanilla ice cream and green pepper with gardenia undertones. On the tongue there was toasted almond and strawberry with nice acidity (making for a very food friendly wine) and medium tannins. The finish was long and interesting. This is a very nice table wine.

Now here is something I wasn't expecting. Tanninc, acidic and with a lot of grip, light bodied and from Ribera del Duero. Out of the bottle this had good body, good complexity but this wine is atypical of the region. Notes of sour cherries, some dry wood, somewhat astringent, rather minimal. This needs time to settle in but I'm not sure if it has the stuffing to age too long. Decanter magazine gave this a silver medal in recent tastings - it certainly stands out against the more full bodied status-quo wines of the region. Overall pretty good, but for £18 I'm not sure I'll buy this again. It might age well, it might not. I dont think I'll take the risk to find out.

A little underripe and green, but makes up for it with nice smokey complexity. Still, it was relatively simple and a bit light on the palete for me.
