2004 Feudi di San Gregorio TaurasiTaurasi DOCG Aglianico more |
6/14/2013 - hosscrow wrote: 88 pointsTaurasi has such a unique flavor profile. Inky, opaque dark red. I do not see many wines as dark as this. Nose dominated by plums and prunes. Very weighty mouth feel, almost chewy, and dominated by tar, leather, much of the deep fruit has gone from this wine. a short mono-dimensional finish. Intriguing but not satisfying. Brooding. Vesuvius? Younger? A better producer? |

11/15/2009 - hosscrow wrote: 85 pointsAt another remarkable dinner with Arlynne and Rosaria. Almond encrusted free range chicken, butternut and buttercup squash, brocolli casserole. This wine wa ery well made with nice balance and elegance, harmonious. The problem is that there just isn't much aroma or taste. Light to medium color, normal viscosity, medium depth. Complex but not powerful. Flavors of licorice and blackberry, short finish. Much better than any other barbera that I have had. I will seek out other Conterno Piedmont wines. |

12/1/2016 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 89 pointsDark purple center, out the to the rim. Jammy plum, dark cherry and vanilla notes on the nose, medium mouthfeel, lots of dark red berry fruit, tart acid, low tannin, medium finish. Well-made, approachable, not complex, delicious. Easy to sip and enjoy or better with the higher acid to have with pasta and red sauce. Will soften in a year or two. |

6/15/2013 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 89 pointsCab Franc and Riesling are going to make the FL reputation. These are excellent wines. The CF is not as deep or complex as Loire but there is quality and development there. Great developments since my last trip here about 4 years ago. Bright red/purple color. Powerful cherry and red raspberry nose. A bit candied. Soft medium bodied mouthfeel. Tart acidity and ripe tannins. An easy drinking, very well made and balanced wine. |

1987 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Coronas Reserva Mas La PlanaPenedès more |
5/15/2011 - hosscrow wrote: 89 pointsSince these are his birthday wines, we cracked the first bottle of this Mas La Planas'87 on his 21st birthday. We celebrated with Arlyne and Roe, Nancy, Geoff and his dear friend and young wine enthusiast, Zak. This bottle had a strong, leathery, dry almost stinging nose. I feared for its life. the the taste shocked all with its rich fruit, Cab sweetness and long length. I'm celebrating Geoff again with this wine tonight. I'm alone so that I can give this wine, one of my favorites and Am familier with several vintages, more than any other wine that I have tasted. Tonight's bottle is a similar yet different experience. The wine has a deep mahagony color; red in the center and fanning out to this rich color that goes nearly to the rim. Even at 23 years, the wine looks youthful....like Geoff. Actually, made the same year into wine, geoff shares his age and cosmic influence with this Mas La Planas. Should I get him another bottle that he will not open until late in his life. Actually, a man lives longer than most wine, so a wine made in 1949 would be even more decrepit than I am. The nose of this bottle of the 87 is sharp, leathery, pungent, not pleasant. Then, with the taste, a whallop of dark red fruit, mostly blackberry, very soft and light mouthfeel kicks in and balances the leather notes of the nose. A unique balance of opposites, with a marked acid and an extended finish. It's wine that I could grow tired of because the age overwhelms the fruit. Still it's a complex and intriguing and very well made wine. It has a drying finish also. I would not purchase another 87, but I look forward to tasting the Mas la Planas from the 90's that I have in my cellar |

9/20/2015 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 90 pointsDeep, Bright purple to the rim. Blackberry and a hint of mint and chocolate on the nose. Vanilla. Lively, Soft, Medium bodied and mouthcoating with a firm structure. Intense. An extended finish, still a bit astringent but with the Stags Leap concentration. This wine will improve with a few more years. |

12/29/2016 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 95 pointsDark, opaque, ruby red to the rim with color moving slowly to the center. At its peak now but will hold for several years. Aromatic nose of dark blue fruit, leather, cedar, a hint of clove. complex and powerful as the wine emerged on the second day. Rich taste of blackberry and spices, like a delicious pie but with a powerful structure, tart acidity, dusty and ripe tannins. Beautifully balanced with a moderately long finish with the floral scents coming in right at the end. Sonoma with its More tightly structured and lighter mouthfeel than a juicy, herbaceous Napa cab. Definitely decant. As someone wrote, legendary stuff. |

11/3/2012 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 89 pointsA fine example of a Sonoma Cab. Elegant and well balanced. Has aged beautifully. Dark and opaque. Brilliant hues. Nose of current, leather, a hint of mint and black tea. Medium body, Cab ID. marked acidity, nicely resolved tannins. An extended complex finish, especially the cedar and spiciness and soft and not a hint of bitterness. Not the extra stuffing of a Etude cab. |

2011 Emblem Cabernet Sauvignon Oso Vineyard Napa Valleymore |
10/9/2020 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 88 pointsDark ruby red. Opaque. The faint aromas of blackberry, vanilla, and black pepper emerge after several hours of decanting. Light mouthfeel for a Napa Cab with a medium + lively acidity and ripe, nicely drying tannins. Medium finish. A disappointing wine from a vintage with a cold, wet spring, a late fruit set, a mild summer and a harvest that dragged on into November, bedeviled by rain and rot. A horrible year for Napa Cabernet. |

4/5/2020 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 93 points150 cases. Perfect aging for a Napa Cab. Drink Now. Still shows lots of fruit as well as tertiary notes. Inky, completely opaque. Looks like a Cahor. The legs are slow showing high extract. Needs decanting as it improved over several hours and there is moderate sediment in the bottle. Wonderfully complex nose. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis), espresso, cedar, lead pencil, black pepper and tobacco. |

2016 Secret Indulgence Cabernet Sauvignon TarotNapa Valley more |
4/9/2020 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 90 pointsFirst impression. What is the earthy nose? French oak? A clear wine with Garnet/Brick color and hints of purple, dark but not opaque like the Random Ridge, legs that took a minute to drop, but the same ABV 14.5% as the Raymond Family Classic (half the price) whose legs fell quickly?? Deep black fruits, blackberry, Rose (no bell pepper) a hint of mint and a nice French oak smoke. Medium supple tannins, and medium flavor intensity, lower acidity than the RAymond with an balanced, fruit forward extended finish, modeterale complexity. A basic, well made Napa Cab. |

4/30/2015 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 94 pointsa remarkable wine. Must be decanted for 24 hours. On opening, a strong nose of vegetal green pepper. I do not appreciate this aroma. With two hours of decanting the green nose becomes a mint like aroma and the fruit begins to emerge. On the second day, the fruit becomes balanced by the firm structure typical of diamond Mountain. A beautiful appearance Ruby with hints of purple, this wine is maturing. A beautiful nose of BlackBerries, mint, vanilla, leads to a medium bodied, elegant, balanced finish. |

9/21/2013 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 91 pointsLet this wine breathe. Starts out as nice red fruit, tart acid and ripe tannins. In a few hours, the parts meld and the fruit becomes richer with a leather and chocolate background on the nose and a hint of spicy clove...nicely complex, not powerful. Deep, dark red with purple highlights. The wine has some ability to age more. Smooth mouthfeel and a strong finish with lots of fruit and some what bitter tannins. Get more of this wine and let it sit. |

3/10/2013 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 90 pointsEven though this wine is from the hotter Dry Creek area, its characteristics are Sonoma Cab...lighter weight, higher acid, bright fruit. Color is a deep purple-red, nearly opaque-just starting out. Dark red fruit aroma, not much bouquet yet. A high tone hint of mint and cherry gives the nose complexity. Not powerful. Still tannic on the attack but on the finish the red fruit and acidity come more into balance. A well-made elegant, claret-style wine with a good future. |

2007 Round Pond Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherfordmore |
2/6/2018 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 93 pointsFirst impression on the second day is a beautiful balance of oak and fruit, the result of nice aging as this wine is at its peak now but will stay here for a few years, at least. Lovely garnet color with inky purple hints extending to the rim. Ripe, dark black fruit and blueberries, olives, nice depth as a mineral quality and some cedar and expresso emerges on the nose. Similar flavors with a medium plus acidity, gritty but ripe tannins, a full mouthfeel leads to a balanced, extended finish. Lower score because this fine wine does not have the richness and power of more expressive wines. |

2004 Artesa Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valleymore |
1/4/2014 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 88 pointsDecanted and then drank throughout the evening. Deep red Opaque moving away from the rim actually about three layers of color. Drink now. This wine will not improve anymore. Complex nose shows aging with hints of leather and cedar box and dark red current fruit. This wine tastes pleasant with aspects of aging particularly an unbalanced tart acidity with the faded fruit. Leather. A short finish that shows a bit of bitterness and drying tannins. |

8/14/2012 - hosscrow wrote: 93 pointsLet this baby breath for a while. At the end of the second day, I feel that I caught this wines potential and pedigree. Ruby-red and purple (still young drink in two years). Glistening. Powerful aroma and complexity after the bottle age came out. Great structure, tart acid, and Mountain intense, dry tannins; but the lovely berry fruit is there along with hints of tobacco and cedar; a mouthful with an extended sweet finish. 24 hours ago, this wine was too tannic,,today, the tannins are much more integrated and balanced with the fruit and acid. I am going to let the other bottles of Wallis sit for two years. |

4/9/2020 - hosscrow Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis wine demonstrates why people fall in love with Napa Cab. It's all here-color brick with hints of purple out to the rim; no signs of advanced age; opaque, pronounced slowly moving legs, intense aroma of blackberry, blueberry, cedar, tobacco, smokey wood. Lots of sediment. In the mouth, intense Mt. fruit, supple tannin, medium + acidity and a long balanced finish. Obviously, a small production. Select Atlas Mt. fruit |
