Still drinking very nicely. No rush on this. But also has not evolved a ton over the last couple of years... so not expecting any major evolution.

Montafi is always one of my favorites and the 2017 is great! Classic, deep fruit, but maybe even a nit more acidity than normal. Excellent stuff and drinking very well right now.

Sadly, this is nowhere near as good as the 2016 vintage that I enjoyed so much. This is slightly imbalanced toward big and powerful, and I miss the complexity from the other vintage. Still a very good wine that paired well with our mixed grill. I'll wait another year before I open another one to see if magic happens.

Opened, poured and let sit about 1 hr. Then: Pretty much the same as my 1/14/2024 note; except - maybe not quite as harsh at first sip, maybe due to sitting a bit longer. So, maybe a point better on the front end of the glass, but taking off a point for the feeling at mid- and end-glass that this was becoming a bit disjointed, maybe beginning to lose a bit of its structure. Alcohol/warmth still noticeable. I think this is my last bottle and that's OK - not my style of zin.

This bottle took a bit more to open up than the last one. Day, one was a little austere compared to how I remember it when I had this last. This is a relative comparison though. Day, one opened up more to red fruit, pepper, brambly flavors. It’s still a great drinking Carlisle. Red fruit, lots of zippy acidity. I went on a spiel to my friends about old vines and then had my friends taste it. Their first comment was wow this is really good. for what it’s worth.

2022 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch

5/17/2024 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 96 points

Decanted for an hour. Similar to the ‘22 Mancini where there’s cherry nuance. Typically with all things Piner-Olivet, it’s all about berries. However, in ‘22, there’s cherry. Cherries, cinnamon, bramble berry, elderberry, orange zest and marble. The body is medium, yet a concentration remains. Long, flowing and focused. So unique. I see some ‘11 and a little ‘07, yet this is very individualized. There’s tension and a sappy quality that persists. Perfect acidity. I love the fact that of all of the designated bottles from Russian River Valley/Piner-Olivet for Carlisle, Papera has the greatest concentration of Zinfandel. This truly unfolds with panache. Drink 2027 - 2039.

2022 Carlisle Grenache Rossi Ranch

Sonoma Valley more

5/17/2024 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 98 points

Decanted for two hours. This has the most addicting nose! Fresh strawberries, petrichor, garrigue, cherry schnapps, fig and crumbling rock. Almost translucent, with so much verve. Possibly the most feminine and pure wine in the Carlisle catalogue. I recently had the ‘13 Rossi Grenache and was surprised by how well it had developed. This will do the same, in only a more stonking fashion. With 24% Mourvèdre, and picked after the massive heatwave of early September 2022, the clean lines and endless finish just draw you in. Only 250 cases produced. This is closer to Rayas than Clos Saint Jean, stylistically. Silky, layered tannins give way to a gushing palate and round middle. Better than the exquisite ‘19 and ‘21. Drink 2026 - 2038.

2016 Carlisle Petite Sirah Sonoma County

more

5/17/2024 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 92 points

I must be perfectly transparent here. Petite Sirah is not one of my favorites. Just like Petite Verdot, I prefer it as a blending grape as it can seem dense, tannic, and one dimensional. However, when you have wine making of this amazingly high quality, you can’t help but to enjoy a delectable wine, which this is. Bramble berry, blueberry, dried tar and flower shop. A medium-long finish and great concentration, yet there is still some lift. Microfiber tannins. Within its drinking window, this will age for at least another ten years. Drink now - 2034.
Day one: delicious
Day two: even more delicious…

PnP. Wow, huge nose with cherry, blueberry, blood orange, raspberry, spice and pepper. Load with fruit, but not jammy, well balanced. Cherry, raspberry, blood orange, spice, Beautiful balance with a long smooth finish. Really good now, but probably better in a year or two.
