2023 Chapelle d'Ausone

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/4/2024 - Jeff Leve wrote: 94 points

Violets, roses, black raspberries, licorice, and cherry aromatics carry the perfume. On the palate, the wine is elegant, polished, sweet, and lively. The tannins are soft, the fruits are lifted, and creamy. There is a vibrance, and energy here with an understated approach this is perfect for the vintage. It is difficult to believe this is a second wine. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2028-2047. 93-95 Pts.

Late release … directly from the château.

This bottle was out of this world !!! Wine of the year so far.
Such intense, deep and layered aroma. It kept coming in waves.
Mouth so smooth, it glides around your teeth. Liquid silky texture.
Finish … minutes and minutes … so beautiful and tempting.

It’s the second label … God only knows what the Grand Vin should give.

Nevertheless, this Chapelle 09 is a perfect 100 for me !

Drink or hold, but damn … this now is in a perfect drinking spot !

93-95 Punkte.

Insanely aromatic! Translucent ruby colour, leather, walnut, almond, medicinal dried herbs, sweet candy fruits! Linear palate and a good depth, smooth and sweet! With or without decanting, drink now or within the next five to eight years! A beauty!

Right Bank Bordeaux Tasting: Tasted single blind. Good wine, but full disclosure at this point in the line up, my palate was shot with all of these Merlot based wines. I wish this had come earlier in the line up as I have always enjoyed Chapelle d'Ausone.

Not as strict as its big brother, this would be best with food. Good verve, but the tannins are soft on the back end, without losing too much energy. No angularity, but a bit simple; small injections of minerality without being biting.

Lots has been written about how this is an off-vintage but what Ausone has done here with their second wine.. is amazing.

Balanced, early drinking style with sufficient complexity only after a decade, we were all impressed! 60% CF, 25% Merlot and 15% Cab. Aged in 85% new oak.

Tannins softened after 2 hours bottle breathing, lovely elegance and purity of black with red fruits. Hints of minerality too.

Joe Yee's memory and recollection of the Vauthier family was indeed right.. The Vauther family owns other properties in Saint Emilion, Chateau Moulin St. Georges, Chateau Fonbel, Simard and Haut Simard.

In 2014, the Vauthier family added another chateau to their growing portfolio of vineyards with the purchase of the neighboring vineyard, Chateau La Clotte.

I rarely see the Grand Vin nor this Chapelle second wine for sale, so I am glad I could share this with Joe Yee Wong, Mika Tyson Teau and Chris Quek.

Only 20,000 bottles of Chateau Ausone are produced each vintage. About 8,000 bottles are transformed into a La Chapelle d’Ausone every year as well!

Happy Birthday brother Joe Yee Wong Glad we managed to celebrate Gi's and your big day albeit late!

Good from the start but great after a few hours. Ripe and plush body with fine tannins. Cherry, plum, menthol, leather, and mineral. No rush to drink these as they will continue to improve. Agree that is pretty amazing that this is the Ausone second wine.

Deeply colored, the nose shows off its wild flowers, black raspberries, incense, and licorice nuanced perfume without asking. Medium-bodied, creamy, lush, fresh, and with a strong sense of minerality, the wine fills your palate with chocolate, mint, spice, licorice, and black cherries before you find all the salty, crushed rocks, and stones on the back end. Once again, it is difficult to believe this is a second wine. The wine blends 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% ABV, 3.52 pH. Drink from 2027-2048. 93-95 Pts.

St. Emilion night (Chicago, IL): Firm and structured, drinking quite youthfully at the moment, and really needing a lot of air to finally show more than just tannic structure on the palate. With that air though, there are more leathery elements, but a plush, black fruit profile starts to emerge. This shows the acidity and leaner, structural elements of the vintage in a backwards way.

Had this wine last summer and thought it was good... Maybe the ambiance or the company of that evening?
Nope!
This bottle confirmed to me, again, that the Ausone establishment knows how to make wine.
Nothing more to say.
It's really fine at this time, but likely better in a decade?

And, I can't wait, in a few years, to see if the main wine will truly make it to the 2070, as mentioned in WA etc.

But, I won't be around then... And can't leave it all to the kids!!! 🤣

PS- Drink The Rainbow!

Flowers, leafy herbs, mint, espresso, cherries, plums and a hint of blueberries come alive in the aromatic profile. But, the best is yet to come with its array of minerals, rocks, stones and salt-tinted red and black fruits that cross your palate with length, lift, precision, purity and soft, smooth-textures. It is difficult to believe that this is their second wine. Drink from 2025-2040.
