Loncomilla Valley Red Blend more

Nose: interesting. Almost licorice / candied red fruit. Some citrus as well almost like the old citrus odwala smoothies, or tangerine Nantucket nectar. Maybe malty? Can’t pinpoint it. Some earthiness as well more it breathes.

Palate: slightly tannic. Decent acid from the Syrah. Oak and spiced wood. Dark red fruit but still sorta candied. High intensity on flavor. Def a food wine.

Overall in terms of value pretty great. Not my personal favorite in terms of flavors/aroma. But decent quality for the price. Good job Chile.

Rich and creamy with light oak. There is a slight grassy/hoppy flavor, but I don’t think I could ever identify this wine blind.

Dry-farmed. Stainless steel fermentation. 8 months in oak barrels. 1,625 bottles made. Ciliegiolo is a lesser-known variety grown in central Italy in places like Liguria and Tuscany. However, given the trends towards lighter, fresher wines, it’s been used to blend with bigger red varieties. I’ve only had it in Tuscan Sangiovese based wines as 10% or less of the wine. Gillmore in Maule has a whole line of Italian varieties and is the only Chilean producer I know that produces this variety.

The nose exhibits red and purple fruit with some violet. The palate shows cherry fruit, soft tannins, vibrant acidity and a touch of spice. Medium-bodied. It’s nice and zippy on the palate, but the alcohol is high which makes it less compatible with peppery or spicy food since the alcohol may accentuate the heat. Would work well with savory pasta dishes or pizza, but not pepperoni pizza or Arrabbiata sauced pasta. Still a good value at $14 or so.

Ripe blackcurrants, ripe blackberries, ripe black cherries, graphite, violet petals, cedar wood and vanilla on nose. The palate adds smoke and a little plastic (maybe a tad reductive?) but is otherwise very consistent with the nose. Intensity of both flavors and aromas is medium +. At age 3, this wine is all about primary and secondary flavors - there isn't anything that's not either fruity/floral or oaky. I wish there more non-fruit things, and with time there will probably will be. But overall this is very smooth and rounded with well integrated oak.

Medium + body with medium acid and medium + tannin that would be bigger if not for the smoothness from the oak. Developing. I think that this will really benefit from 2-3 more years in the bottle. Definitely hold.

Slightly gritty blackberry and licorice aromas lead to a tight and grabby palate. Typical of Maule Carignan, this tastes of dark plum and blackberry, while notes of herbs and chocolate add some complexity to a rubbing, tannic finish.

The grittiness wears off by day 2

By the bottle at Adobe in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. A blend of Montepulciano, Sagarantino, Primitivo, Cesanese and Dolcetto from Chile’s Maule Valley (!) Decanted for about an hour, full of ripeness, notes of strawberries and cherries but not overdone and there is plenty of interest with grape leaf, a bit of new leather, hint of earth. Really nice. Excellent balance with 13.4% abv; great acidity but good tannins, not overpowering, pretty long finish. In a great spot now, probably for a few more years too.

I like this. It reminds me of Bordeaux, yet it reminds me of Margaret River. It has big, ripe blackcurrant flavors, but also a lot of fresh, redder fruit acidity, and of course pyrazines. There is an interesting note of potting soil, and big tannins. This is a serious wine. I don’t usually appreciate Chilean caringnan wines, but I find this appealing. It may be the best carignan wine I’ve ever tasted. The sheer weight is impressive for this price range.

50% Syrah & 50% Merlot. Med+ ruby w/ a purple core. Med+ aromas of black cherry, ripe red cherry, black plum, menthol, roast bell peppers, ground black pepper. Dry but with rich fruit, med to med+ acid, med tannin and high alcohol (14% but seems higher). Full-bodied, with a rounded mouthfeel and med+ flavor intensity. Falls off a little w/ a med long finish w/ spice and licorice. Drinking well now and for the next several years. Great QPR in the $16-$19 range.

50 year old vines; clay and rocky soil. 18 months in barrel. Good acid. Lots of oak notes, but integrated along with Cabernet Franc peppery, herbal notes. Juicy palate. Still present tannic structure. Verging on dried fruit and mushroom flavors from the age. 5,000 bottles made. You can age this some more to get more full-on tertiary notes because there’s enough tannins and acidity to keep it longer.

1,609 bottles made. 18 months barrel aging. Alluvial clay and rocky soil. Dry-farmed. Bright purple, youthful color. Round and fruity wine. Dark and red berry fruit. Medium tannins and acid. Medium-full bodied. Approachable now and not as structured as the older Italian Sagrantino tasted next to it.

1/15/2022 - Sa_Henrique wrote: 92 points

Dark fruit, wood, resin, herbs - a little medicinal, but very attractive. In the mouth impressive though not really my style, bold and tannic, rather too young than too old, cries for food. Alcohol (14.5%) well embedded though.

Deep ruby color. Shifting and complex aromatics of mulberry, blueberry, cassis and red plum, fresh and ripe, with baking spice & vanilla, potpourri, tomato leaf, leather and iron. Layered and rounded palate, with ripe concentrated black fruit, spices carrying over from the nose, and soil-driven earth. Mouthfilling density, with ample acid and grainy round tannins, finishing with moderate length.
