DC Dinners and Tastings; 2/24/2024-2/26/2024 (Washington, DC): 70% Petit Manseng, 15% Riesling, 15% Vidal Blanc

Banana bread, orange peel, ripe pineapple, ripe yellow apple, ripe yellow peach and ripe pear on the nose. Medium + intensity of aromas. You would ALMOST think this saw oak (it didn't) because the palate adds flavors of vanilla and coconut flakes. It did, however, go through malo, which comes through in a rich butter flavor, similar to a good French butter. But mostly the palate is driven by those big ripe yellow apples and peaches. Intensity of flavors is high. The finish lasts for 30 seconds which was lovely and unexpected.

I guess I never realized how big Petit Manseng is. The Riesling and Vidal Blanc do their job to moderate it a bit. But still, full body with medium - acid. Really unique. This is a big step up from what I remember of Virginia wines when I lived in DC in the 2010s. Drink now!

I loved this Riesling now and when I first tried it upon release. Fully dry, mesium body, a beautiful spiced version of this grape. Wish I had more bottles to age even longer.

This was a really good rosé. Rose petals and watermelon on the nose. Crunchy watermelon rind, nice minerality and acidity. Chuggable as these spring days warm up.

Yum. A nose full of honey and then a big mouthful of tropical fruits. Great acidity to balance it all out.

So good. Watermelon and orange peel on the nose. Has a pleasant chunkiness to it but stays fresh and vibrant with floral perfume and a nice margarita and salt kick. Vidal Blanc and Petit Manseng -- cool stuff, these guys are always doing fun things with Virginia grapes.

This producer never disappoints! This blend is the wine equivalent to butternut squash soup: comforting, spiced yet light. Very round body and light texture, spices such as all-spice and nutmeg dominate without being overwhelming as they are balanced by the acidity of the Riesling.

This Riesling is such a trip, very spiced and feels more mature than it is. Great but creamy acidity -if that makes sense- and shows a little bit of petrol.

Cherry and all red fruit on the nose, nice acidity balances it out. The body is nice, heavier than your typical rose. It is a little bit too "blendy"for my taste, if that makes send, and of course it's an unusual blend too. I like the finish of persistent acidity and a touch of roses. Pretty good.

What an amazing Riesling, very peculiar! Exceptionally smooth texture, like watered down honey (in a good way), very different taste and accent of cloves and baking spices that you would expect from much older Riesling. Wow, Virginia!

Part of a virtual wine tasting. Hosted by one of the owners of the winery. Tasted over 4 to 5 days. Rose blend of Pinot Gris, Blaufrankisch and Petit Manseng. Light salmon color with suspended particulate matter and sedement. Strawberry and green apple on the nose. On the mouth mostly sour acid with tannins. Toasty tones and apple. Finish consists mostly of the acid.

My new favorite winery. Syrah and Riesling. Never would’ve thought these would go so well together. That peppery Syrah is really well balanced by the juicy sweetness of the Riesling. Really wild stuff

I sipped this over the course of three days and was stoked to see it evolve significantly. Light yellow color. Super floral on the nose with tart lime, green apple, white peach, along with mint, verbena, some slate and chalk, too. Punchy texture on the palate, but it also has this steely, crisp feel, too. Crunchy apricot and papaya fruit, drizzled with lime, in a gorgeous fruit salad combo, topped in white flowers, basil and mint. Deep texture, it gets more balanced and expressive with air. I'd love to see what four or five years could do to this wine. Great job, team, this was killer stuff with a pasta I whipped up with some vegetables and ramps.

The nose wafts a hand-picked garden bucket of lemon, lime, dandelion greens and artichoke, all dusted with white pepper and coriander. Pear and marzipan appear with extended air. It's medium bodied with sharp acid that slowly coats the palate. Flavors include sharp bitter lemon, under ripe grapefruit, clementine and Opal apple. A bit myopic out of their gate, it develops a bit with extended air. A few years of aging, however, will allow the tightly-wound acid to release and give way to a few layers that are held back at the moment.

A New World nose featuring muddled cherry and strawberry, black plum, cassis and rose petal. Medium bodied in weight with lush, moderate acid and long, barely grippy tannins that find great balance with each other. It delivers a nice juxtaposition of lighter cherry, strawberry, blood orange flavors that team up nicely with heavier tanned leather, dark chocolate and black tea notes. This is a serious wine that isn't taking itself too seriously. Drive over the next three years.
