But this wine is much more about structure and minerality. Grippy mouth feel, good length and refreshing acidity. A bit challenging, but quite nice. |

4/14/2024 - mks83 Does not like this wine: 87 pointsDay 1 - Tastes really like a high-altitude wine (even more than how it is advertised) - if blind, I might have guessed an acidic Savoie Mondeuse instead of a Rioja. Dark black-ish red purple color with rather clear hue. Very little viscosity in texture. The nose consists of raspberry, dark cherry, yangmei bayberry and black pepper. The mouth is very tart, with medium and dry sandy tannins. The attack to the middle is well fruited, but the aftertaste is somewhat hollow / flat. The enjoyment level is very context-dependent (only if you are into alpine-wines and curious about atypical Rioja). 88. |

Shiny dark ruby/purple, fully translucent in the glass. The wine opens on a superbly expressive note - garrigues, strawberries & raspberries, loads of spice. Palate is rich, round w a fair bit of firm tannins emerging at fore, bright ripe red fruit as per nose, overload of spice remniscent of a young Neuf, leading to a mineral-spicy, juicy-dry close! 1 person found this helpful, do you? Cherries, strawberry, sweet blackberry, plum and nectarine, a little scorched earth, raw red meat, and flowers, vague herbal tones as well, but the main thrust is gorgeous fresh fruit. Quite ripe, juicy and dense on the palate, full-bodied yet lithe and lively, subtle floral notes inform the inner perfume, mineral and saline, very fine tannins and a strong acid line, but the fruit is so intense that the structure is buried. This aged in oak, but I don't get oaky notes, or at least not new oak, and it certainly does not have the sawdust and vanilla oakiness found in large numbers of Rioja. The finish is where more herbal character shows up, but once again it is the pristine fruit that rides high and long, with a crunchy stone fruit character (pluot, nectarine, cherry...) leaving a distinct impression. Love this style of Rioja, showcasing high altitude cool terroir and low intervention winemaking. Goodness me, yes please, oh my. I can't see this fading any time soon, but I'm also not sure what the upside might be... could see it in very fine form 10+ years from now. |
