2008 R. López de Heredia Rioja Reserva Viña Tondonia

Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more

Definitely my favorite versus the Bosconia which is more “old school” rioja and more delicate. The Tondonia has more modern elements including more oak but still remains elegant and refined with an excellent finish.

This was drinking fantastically after 3 hour decant. well structured but smooth on the finish with great red fruit and integrated tannins. may be in its peak window

Black purple in the glass. Nose of stewed black fruits and some alcohol with wood chips. This is a big wine even thought the ABV sits at a reasonable 14.75%. After a 2 hour aeration/decant wine is drinking great - with the typical mountain acidity that braces the wine and allows for longer aging than floor fruit. I find it to be in balance with excellent fruit and a solid finish. will improve with 2-3 more years in bottle.

1/28/2021 1:07:00 PM - Prices just keep going up and up. Just bought 4 bottles at $175 apiece - it was $150 in 2016. Normally I would buy 6 or more but hard to justify when I can find a lot of great wines <$100

Highest rating I have ever given a wine. This is a full throttled Cab that is drinking very nicely at the moment but will develop further for 10+ years. Dark blue and black fruits with cassis and loamy overtones.

Rose petals and cherry liquor on the very perfumed nose with iron overtones. after 3 hours decant it is still somewhat rigid with a tannic backbone that gives the wine a distinctive structure and elegance. long powerful finish that finishes a bit austere but goes great with food. this is a food wine.

4/2/2019 4:29:00 PM - this wine has a lot of structure so it is going to age for another 10-15 IMO and as with most well built Barolo's will gain nuances and complexity with more bottle age but it is drinking well currently.

this wine has really improved over the last 18 months while in bottle. i was skeptical of the 96 rating and it still might be high but this wine has evolved tremendously. purple black in color with a pungent and aromatic nose. on the palate it is very rich and dense for an italian wine but still expresses minerality. long finish this is a wine that will continue to age well.
