Not sure why I opened, I knew from the last bottle this needs years to reach where it should be. Good, but don’t open yet.

12/22/2021 12:40:00 PM - That's funny! What makes the struggle even more dumb is opening it after having too much of a bunch of other bottles. You would think after 25 years of imbibing, I would learn...but I am in the #neverlearn club also.

Decanted only a couple hours. Fantastic wine. An alluring nose, leather, truffle, red fruits. Loads of Unami. Kept getting better throughout the night. Probably the best 1967 I have ever had.

5/2/2021 10:56:00 AM - No, I would decant probably 4 hours if I were to have this again. I normally do at least a half day for these old Barolo, but was a bit worried on this one from a note or two here saying to hurry up. At least this bottle had plenty of life left and was better at 5 hours than at two.

Okay. A bit too waxy and creamy, without enough acidity to even that out. Nose is floral, but only after getting past some of the obvious oak. Note sounds negative, and I suppose it is a bit, but it is well made, holds interest, etc., purely a stylistic thing.

10/23/2020 1:01:00 PM - Interesting. I used to drink this wine reasonably frequently across some different vintages, but has been probably close to a decade. Probably usually 3-10 years old, so no experience with this wine with serious age. I don't doubt it would age decently though I would be curious, and just a tad bit skeptical, due to the oak influence and alcohol level, on what it would really be like, say at the 20 year mark. Hold up pretty well? Ok. Improve? Skeptical! But would love to be proven wrong!

Similar to my 1/22/2020 tasting note. Oddly, I was just as dumb this time in not starting the decant in the morning. Still, as it opens up and gains weight to balance out the acidity, really becomes pretty nice for a 55 year old bottle. Especially so at $85.

Candied, very large scale and extracted. Some heat. Reasonably tasty in a vacuum, though nothing to hold individuality or interest. Yes, well made in a sense, and I am sure lovely for those who appreciate the style.

I am pretty certain those who like modern CdP will love it.

In a vertical of Monte Real Gran Reservas last week, from 1942 to 2011, this was the top wine, followed by the 1968. It all depends on the bottle at this age, but these were all direct from the winery cellars, so as good as you are likely to get. I didn’t take great notes, but it was rich, fresh and still young. Stunning.

6/14/2019 10:02:00 AM - Thanks! I picked up a couple 1955's and hope to grab a 42, 64 and 68....so will certainly chime in some months from now with comments.

Yes, young, but is it just me that the last couple years of these have been nicely more constrained than in the past. Just as the 2012 Chardonnay was the best (by far) of any Marcassin Chard I had had (probably 10-12 vintages worth), I think the 2012 pinot is right up there as the best young one I have tried. I struggle to see how these became so controversial over the years. Pretty delicious and nicely balanced, a few years under its belt should make it outstanding.

Not much to complain about here. Drinking wonderfully. Was a bit more tame, for lack if a better word, than I expected, but do not take the negatively, but as positive. Dark ruby. Lots of flowers, dark fruit and cocoa. Very good acidity more or less perfectly balanced with the remaining soft, integrated tannins. Could sip on this daily!

This was way too dominated by smokey oak notes. I felt like I was checking on a charred barrel. Did not see anyone mention this in any other notes, so wondering. Some sweet vanilla on the finish, pretty big and brawny on the palate. I see why some say smoked meats, tar, etc. but just cannot get past the smoke.

2/10/2017 12:07:00 PM - Thanks for your comment BRR. I am pretty sure it was either just me, or perhaps something was just a bit off. I went back on a second day and third day and while what I took as smoke mellowed some, it was still pretty dominant. I have had others (though not of this vintage), and in general all of the syrah's I enjoy (some spectacularly), so who knows what happened here in this one case. I will open another one in a few weeks or so. I am taking out the cigarettes smart ass comment as that really was over the top!

Excellent rose. Like sticking your nose and palate in a bowl of fresh picked strawberries. Good acidity. Should add that it really has nice structure. Came back to it on day 2 and had not moved an inch. Moving up to 91. Quite refreshing sitting on the beach!

Probably the best $20 bottle of wine in a long time. What a great QPR. That was truly excellent, and in a great spot. Had it over three nights and remained excellent the entire time. Blue and red fruits, a bit of spice, and an earthy component. Nice finish. Should have bought a case for a go to nightly wine.
