Root Day - fair bit of funk on opening but once it got some air there was ripe red and black fruit along with some savoury herbs on both the nose and palate. The finish is medium in length with some spice accompanying the fruit and herbs. Well done and showing some maturity. Drink now.

Fruit Day. Stelvin cap. Pale straw into the glass. Nose is white flowers, citrus, mineral, sea air and a hit of granite(?). It’s crisp on the palate with medium plus acidity and flavours of citrus, mineral and light savoury herbs. The medium length finish carries the acidity but includes the minerality and citrus cleansing the palate and making your mouth water; making you want to take another sip. It’s clean, crisp and dry but essentially simple, though quite enjoyable. Excellent with fettuccine with a creamy salmon sauce.

I tried a higher priced Soave beside the Bolla and preferred it for complexity but preferred the Bolla with the dish. The other Soave Classico was actually too complex and fought with the dish. Sometimes simplicity is the key to food/wine pairing.

Root Day - Stelvin cap. Pop and pour. Translucent light crimson in the glass. The nose is dark cherry, savoury herbs, light smoke, damp earth, and spice. On the palate it’s floral with bright cherry, spice and sweet herbs. Medium plus acidity and light tannins complete the package. The finish is quite long with the spice, cherry and herbs all continuing. This is a well made and tasty Pinot Noir. New World in it’s fruit but Old World in it’s elegance.

This is my wine of the year so far.

Fruit day, opened and decanted for about 1hr before initial consumption with remainder in decanter. Served with fresh pasta and blistered tomato and burrata sauce.

Colour is a beautiful medium to medium-dark garnet colour complimented by slight bricking on the edges. On the nose I got a ton of fresh leather saddle and confectionary red plums dominating things with a slight trace of baking spice. After this opened the complexity dramatically increased with more nuances of balsamic stewed strawberry, candied orange rind, and rose petal emerging.

Palate brings more dark brooding plums, leather, cinnamon and spice and at points I caught what I thought was some notes of cedar but it was intermittent. Similar to the nose, time was a major factor, as the elegance and poise really came to the forefront. There is medium plus acidity and finely-integrated tannins - this absolutely sang once it had a chance to breathe!

Honestly, just a lovely lovely experience. This is rewarding patience and while there is obvious life left a short decant makes this such an accessible and phenomenal drink. Bravo and I only wish I had more of this. Textbook!

One year since my last time with this wine. It is maturing but in a way that is taking it a step backwards. Not as vivid and compelling as it was one and three and five years ago. Good depth, but acidity and tannin that seems to shut it down a bit. Not sure what to make of it but it does not make me think less of the wine - just will continue to follow it and see where the journey takes me. DAY TWO: Well, isn’t this interesting. The aromatics are incredible at 16 hours open - can smell it from several steps away. Very bright and spicy, with the pie cherry sharpness that was not there yesterday. Mouth feel just as smooth, much more flavor in the mouth of Asian spices and tart cherry with an undertone of used oak barrels. Long finish. Very nice. Merits a higher score but I won’t change it as I wanted to capture the wine on opening.

I opened this and decanted it for 5-6 hours before a tasting. Open opening beautiful nose of tar cherry, earth. Very tannic and structured. Fruit was initially quite up front but settled into the background for... a long time after. I drank this over 4 days and really it wasn't until the last day that things had settled down. scrumptious palate of sour cherry, red fruit, herbaceous, earthy notes abound. It's quite complex and lovely. But, at least in my opinion, we aren't in the drinking window yet. It's still a structured wacked out wild adolescent. It's good, it's gonna be real good but that time is not now... in my humble opinion anyway.

Flower Day - still fresh and vibrant with lots of peach and stone fruit. There’s some petrol sneaking in on this bottle but the fruit is strong in flavour and the petrol just adds complexity. Off dry with medium plus acidity makes it an excellent sipper and a good pairing for chipotle spiced chicken thighs.

This is ridiculously tasty, especially with Osso Bucco and Parmesan Risotto. The nose has touches of Cab Franc but strong elements of Northern Rhône Syrah as well - forest floor, truffles, leaf mould, smoke... Elegant, rich and complex nose. Very soft on the palate carrying herbs (garrigue - sage), meats, bacon fat, and black fruit. The long finish changes from the palate to carry not only the above but also both white and black pepper. Pretty amazing wine and one of a kind. Unfortunately it’s my last bottle and I hope he makes more... this could be a standard bearer for amazing Cab Franc from BC

A No day in the biodynamic calendar (between Fruit and Root). Cork easily extracted in one piece but wet almost to the top. When the cork was pulled the room was filled with aromas of ripe dark fruit (blackberry/plum). Decanted off a small amount of fine sediment.
Tasted initially while still cold from the cellar. Opaque garnet out to a ruby rim. Nose is dark chocolate, ripe plum, smoke, pepperoni and an earthy funk. On the palate the tannins are still present but there’s lots of fruit still showing - mostly black along with a fair bit of leather. There’s a fair bit of bitterness on the back palate while still cold from from the cellar.
Now has had a chance to warm up - Nose is a bit more reticent but still shows the dark fruit but now has a herbal component and some kelp(?). On the palate the leather and the tannins are up front followed by the (now) dried dark fruit and savoury herbs. It’s more intellectual than really enjoyable on the palate - probably left much too long in the cellar but that’s what experimentation is all about.

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, Margaux (Rodwell House): Mid to deep ruby, the nose is youthful with bright red and black cherry, cedar, black plum compote and dried orange peel. There is a hint of stalk, green leaf and earth mingling. Focussed wine.
Medium-bodied, the wine is narrow in palate shape, firmly textured with a lemon-edge acidity leading to grippy tannins. The fruit feels cool with frozen berries, blackcurrant skins, tar, mineral and earthy notes, yet there is a slight sweetness as the wine opens. I found the wine a little hollow in the mid-palate and whilst the frame gave elegance and freshness, the wine was more light-weight than expected - more a luncheon claret.
Medium in length, the wine is fairly long, and reasonably complex but the acid does protrude slightly. I was surprised at the reveal that it was 2009. Perhaps tight?

A 'Lost Cellar' wine, the 2012 St Henri opened with a dark cherry, crimson colour and a fine nose of plum, dark cherry, blackberry and cassis with a touch of pepper and Christmas spices. The palate has excellent weight and a lovely sphere of complex fruits balanced by a line of fine tannins that persist nicely. There is a feeling of understated richness and poise about this wine. Bottled under Stelvin and maturing appropriately with no evidence of reduction.

Darker than most Gamay's I've had from the new world and a nice re-aquiantence with Beaujoalis, which I used to drink a lot of about 10 years ago. Served slightly chilled for a wonderful French lunch at Bell's in Los Alamos (highly recommended) and it had both of us just reveling in its nuance and fruit. Served slightly chilled. Outstanding! Aussie Shiraz from the early 2000's had the tendency to be too ripe, too high in alcohol and terrible with food. But give them some time and they often become really good. In this case, it is now much more mellow. The fruit still shows through, but it has tamed down. It now shows a seamless texture. Really, really nice bottle. (On another note, I find that CellarTracker really helps with "drink by" dates. Even though the CT drinking range for this wine ended in 2017 and RP said to drink by 2020, 45 percent of the bottles are still in cellars. Wine drinkers vote with their corkscrews. Just look to the "In Cellars" percent and the "Consumed" percent to see what other serious wine drinkers think about the drink by date.

  • Comment posted by biggie:

4/5/2022 8:07:00 AM - I tend to ‘correct’ the CT drink by dates and enter my own using critics notes, my tasting history on the wine and especially CT tasting notes. In this case, I have adjusted it to 2017-2025. Does that range make sense to you?

Root Day - Decanted off a small amount of sediment. Pours translucent garnet into the glass with browning edge. Nose of crushed leaves and herbs with leather and tobacco, some acetic acid, dust and a light touch of dried black fruit. Very complex and interesting nose. On the palate it’s still got some light ripe tannins giving it life along with medium plus acidity. Flavours are red and black fruit with some acetic acid but it smooths out showing garrigue on the back palate. The finish is long with tobacco, dried fruit, herbs and leather. The acetic acid appears to be building with subsequent sips. Going to see where it goes over the next couple of hours.
Next Day - Root Day - it has not changed (only a glass left for today) and is delightful. Silky smooth on the palate with the tobacco, garrigue, dried fruit all still present and fully appreciated.

Interestingly, the current vintage (2019) has on the back label “will develop for 10 years”. My experience with this one is that is a truism. Maybe in a good cellar 15 years? IF they have maintained the same exacting standards, quality fruit and winemaking style.

Intense nose of red florals (violets?), spice, crushed rock, red fruit (black cherry) and kirsch. On the palate it’s red and black fruit (very fresh), loads of oak and vanilla (very modern), mulling spices, and then some green herbs and some stem bitterness. Very young at this stage and yet showing some ability to develop. The acid is med and the tannins are ripe. I wonder a bit about the bitterness and green character as well as some alcohol heat. Root Day - Pours clear with a translucent light garnet core that extends to the edge. Gorgeous nose of red fruit, red florals, minerals and spice. On the palate it’s fresh and lively with terrific spice and red fruit. Still very primary but definitely keeping up in quality with the previous vintages. Such a versatile and delightful wine. Medium finish but that’s to be expected at this young an age and development.

2nd day - Root Day - Denser red floral aromas today with richer red fruit along with the spice. It’s delicate and dense at the same time. Ripe red fruit on the palate with that lovely spice kick. Very round in the mouth and extremely smooth on the palate. The finish is longer today with the spice predominant but the fruit and florals are still there. Delicious already but has the balance for development (the tannins are quite soft already and I’m a tiny bit concerned about that although they are definitely there). I’m getting more and putting them away for 5 years at least although it’ll be tough to keep my hands off them until then.

4th day- Flower Day - Colour still the same (perhaps a touch darker). Nose is now showing candied red fruit, sweeter red floral elements, and a bit of spice - no mineral or wet rock aromas. On the palate the candied fruit hits first followed by some nice herbs and red licorice. The spice is there on subsequent sips building each time. The finish is spicy, medium plus with the candied fruit and herbs there as well. Seems a bit too juicy today but that could just be me. Still delicious - and the candied fruit mitigated over the 1/2 hour I had it in the glass.

Mid-deep ruby in the glass, with fresh, dark fruits on the nose. There is a touch of earthiness too, adding a savory complexity.

The palate is fresh & fine, with a compact core of dark cherries surrounded by ripe, chalky tannins. There is a stony, earthy nuance throughout that adds a real layer of intrigue for me.

Pure dark fruits drive the medium finish, enduring with a hint of sweet spice.

This is approachable now with a light decant, but it has the stuffing to go longer.
