One last round at Jade Court (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Great showing of a wine that I've loved for quite a while. It's a lot more approachable right now than the dark and intense 2015, with an effusive nose of smoke, slight saline olive notes, and plenty of black fruit. The palate isn't overbearingly tannic, and there's more of a lightness thanks to the acidity here. The fruit is mostly black with a hint of red, but this is surprisingly drinkable (even out of large-format) right now, though there is of course still plenty of potential.

Jura study (Chicago, IL): Definitely my favourite of the three vins jaunes today. A very light touch with elegance that the others didn't have. Of course, plenty of the usual savoury notes, but this doesn't have as much heaviness despite the concentration of flavours. Glad I still have a bottle -- apparently most of the Chicago allocation of this wine became sauce.

Mini Lignier study (Chicago, IL): This has gotten better since I had it last, and was my favourite wine tonight. Much darker in complexion than the 2014s or 2016s, but with firm, ripe fruit and this intense, powerful silky texture throughout. The fruit is relatively sweet and black (for Morey), and there is a lot more weight here. On the other hand, despite all that, this still retains enough acidity and coolness to come off quite balanced. Impressively dense and powerful and drinking very well now. Better to open this (or the 14) than the 2016.

Dinner at 312 Fish Market (Chicago, IL): From magnum. This is one of the most Champagne-like bottlings of Ultramarine I recall having; it's relatively rich and biscuity on the palate, but the midpalate and finish taper out a little bit. Very nice acidity overall, as well as minerality. Quite enjoyable, but I have some trouble with the value proposition here, unfortunately.

Four decades of Penfolds Grange (Chicago, IL): This drank very similarly to the fantastic 1990. The fruit isn't as intense and dark as the younger wine; it is more red-fruit and acid driven, but the potent aromatics and more importantly, the silky texture are both present. Perhaps a little less Parker-forward, and again this comes across more old-school elegant than the more rambunctious 1990. Both, however, were stunning examples of Grange.

Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Not a window to pop and pour this. Everything feels muted, even the high acidity. That being so, I think it makes it more clear that there is a substantial amount of stuffing here, but that time is necessary to help this wine actually round out. I don't intend on opening any of mine for a while.

Absolutely outstanding for the price and level. This is yet another bottle that reminds me why I love Carillon (there is only one, really) so much. Yes, it's opulent and rich and fruity thanks to the vintage, but there is just this impeccable balance with just the right amount of everything. In addition that slight bit of waxiness speaks true to Chassagne.

#13-11, 7% abv. From half bottle. Super exciting, with tons of electricity still. The nose shows a little bit of sponti, as well as plenty of tart fruit and a honeyed tone. On the palate, this is very high acidity for a GKA, but the balance with the fruit and sweetness here makes this really compelling. Zippy green apple acids. Not showing any signs of fading anytime soon. This vintage worked a treat with the high-Prädikat wines.

Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle (full bottles split for a zoom tasting). By the time I got to this people had already figured out it was Monte Bello. Huge. Young. Painfully young. Lots of oak. Coconut - the oak is super heavy but you can see the bright and potent energetic fruit underneath. The purity and drive of the red-blue fruit is immense. Spicy Graham cracker. Palate is explosive. Grippy and real seve - tiny berries and raspberries and black currants, spice and sweet oak. Finish is long and pure, sweet oak and spice and berries. This will be great in 30-40 years. Nose - 5+/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5+/20. (With 18-19/20 potential).

Day 2: the oak has integrated even more on the palate - still heavy but you can see the trajectory for this as it ages and it’s solid.

Heater week; 3/26/2023-4/3/2023 (Chicago, IL): Wow. Hands down the best bottle of young Cappellano I've had. Ethereally light and lifted red fruit, just the right amount of sweetness, and a maddeningly crystalline profile. Right on the pop and pour, the tannins were quite soft and hidden in the background; with air, the immense structure undergirding all that top-level crystalline fruit became more apparent. One for the ages.

Dujac and Moreau come to town (Chicago, IL): I recall not liking this very much the last time I had it (blind), and today's bottle is also not quite as good as I would have wanted from what it said on the label. There's a pretty distinct volatile note here, and the fruit is very ripe and sappy. A lot of the more classic savoury syrah notes aren't here, but there is instead a lot of fruit (which pushes the ripeness a little much).

Dead ringer for ripe vintage Côte de Beaune (probably Meursault). A good mineral hit on the nose, coupled with a modest amount of reduction and oak. On the palate, this is relatively low in acid, but it makes up for it by being thicc and concentrated. Lots of extract as well. An excellent chardonnay that easily plays at a Côte de Beaune 1er cru level.

Flickinger dinner (Chicago, IL): Perfumed, light, and airy, with just a delicate hint of VA that wasn't too pronounced, followed by the expected pure red fruit. This bottle seemed to show a bit of maturity, and the palate had a slight brown tinge to it, though it wasn't too prominent. I do love the light, elegant texture on this wine, and I think it's still showing brilliantly, if not as good as a few years ago (likely more due to bottle variation than the wine aging poorly). It's classic Giacosa; were we ever going to object?

(Mostly) Spanish dinner (Chicago, IL): Keeping with my previous experiences with this wine, a full 24 hours before service, I decided to pop the cork, pour off a fraction of a glass, and let the wine aerate. The initial pour is quite in line with my previous experiences with this wine. It's muted and doesn't show much expressiveness. A slight bit of tart fruit, but an intense waxiness on the nose and palate. Not particularly oaky. Plenty of acidity and liveliness for a wine of this age. This is so intense and concentrated it feels bitter. Oxidative winemaking, yes, but definitely not oxidized.

On the day of service, this wine had indeed amply tightened up and lost some of the waxy aromatics, though it certainly still retained a good amount of them. There's far more weight now, and the fruit shows more intensely. Almost comical levels of concentration. It's still a white wine best treated as a red, and went fantastic with a chicken paella.

This bottle, perhaps being a little more advanced due to its size, and from having been sitting on a store shelf until a few months ago, is showing outrageously well. This feels like a time machine as to how this wine will evolve, and I really, really like what I see here. Beautiful aromatics with lots of fruit and plenty of olive brine -- absolutely textbook for what this wine should be. The fruit is pretty and more red than black, with a silky texture on the palate and some smoky elements and olive brine notes as well. Good acidity to freshen it up, along with some very youthful tannins. A legend in the making.

No. 13870. Exuberant and ripe on the nose. A mix of red and black fruit, and while this is missing the more archetypal syrah notes of meat and pepper on the nose, but there is a slight brininess to the nose (and palate) that seems somewhat atypical for such youthful Chave Hermitage (which honestly to me seems to always just be a pretty big fruit bomb, at least since the 2015 vintage when I started making a habit of opening a bottle on release). The palate on this is quite fantastic -- it reminds me somewhat of the elegance of the 2016, but with fruit that is more opulent and sweet. With air, the brine/olive notes emerge, and give this a much more classical profile. This is a whole 15% abv on the label, but it seems to carry it well on the palate; there's no sign of heat at all, but you do feel the alcohol a bit. All in all, this may be the best vintage since the otherworldly 2010.
