2021 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvée Corcelette

Gamay more

4/27/2024 - thesternowl wrote: 93 points

Foillard’s “Cuvée Corcelette” comes from the eponymous climate in Morgan where Jean’s holdings include vines over 80 years of age. This is a stunning wine that is so Foillard in style: fresh and deep.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days. Consistent over both days but seemed to round out a little more on Day 2. The wine pours a deep, hazy ruby with a near opaque core and an almost fuchsia rim; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears and some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with sensational notes of macerated raspberries, red flowers, carrot juice, celery root, chanterelles, granitic earth and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and so easy to love. Super balanced. Drink now and over the next 10+ years.

Opened this at 9am and decanted until dinner. Tannins were quite grippy when the bottle was opened, but wow was this good when dinner came around. Had all the trademarks of good Barolo with notable cherry and tar. This should age well for many years to come. If you drink it now, definitely decant for 4+ hours.

Clear dark purple in colour. Notes of blackberry, spice, and some tobacco. Nice acidity, med body, grippy tannins. Would have preferred this with a piece of meat. Partner loved the wine, I enjoyed but I am thinking we drank it too soon. Love all the wines from this producer.

It is the end of summer. The wine was warmed & almost cloying in the heat…but I knew I wanted to taste this again.

Deep ruby with a medium+ intensity of black currant, blackberry, orange zest, herbaceous (peppers, grass), herbal (slightly menthol), charred wood and new leather.

Dry, full bodied, good acidity, with smooth tannins that creep up towards the end. Figs & sultanas come through on the finish that I wish was slightly longer.

Very sippable – my last bottle. Wondering if there’s a word that describes both pleasure & sadness at the same time…

Orange wine that is a 50/50 blend of Rkasitelli and Mtsvane. Aged and fermented in qvevri. Beautiful amber gold. Heady aromas of wildflowers, pineapple guava, cantaloupe, almonds and the incense wafting out of the backroom of an Arab souk. All that on the palate too, rich and racy at the same time. Absolutely mesmerizing. I have a headache this morning because our host left the bottle too close to me and I couldn't leave it alone. Serve at room temperature, not chilled.

Second bottle of a six pack and for the producer this is frankly a shade underwhelming. The oak character is the dominant characteristic, almost gluey at first which is odd given they say this sees French oak and I normally associate that with American oak. There is some light blackcurrant and spice we well, but it's not particularly expressive. Perhaps in a moody zone and needing more time?

Unfortunately, the half bottle I left overnight after air evacuation, did not survive very well. So, drink within a few hours of opening. Initially, high levels of taking were evident with coconut being prevelent on the palate accompanied by lesser amounts of strawberry. The second day experience was that of low fruit not offsetting the tannin and acidity. Not a great experience. My 88 was based on the first day experience.

On the nose the age is evident… with tertiary characteristics of earth, tobacco & almost a garrigue note.

Dark cherry & some green pepper from the Cab Franc. (damn you, IBMP!)

Lots of complexity here - surprisingly high acidity, too - makes me think there's still more years ahead for this vintage.

Quite impressive. I was sort of wanting to hate this wine, because I'm an old codger that is still hating on these pricier CdNV bottles, but honestly tasting this right now I feel this wine delivers for the price. Suave and pure, slightly fullish fruit, and some rose and soapy elements on the nose that are probably the result of the stem inclusion. I agree with Jasper Morris that the stems don't stick out nearly as much as you'd think for 100% whole cluster. Worth it.

  • Comment posted by KillerJones:

Light straw gold, it offers apple, pear and mild ashy notes with a supple sweetness in the finish. Not as firm as I like my Chablis to be but a good companion for the sweet pecans and salty crumbled blue cheese in the salad course.

If you're holding these… I wouldn't wait much longer. Maybe I'm just perceiving it wrong but these feel like they are getting a bit tired.

I am also in the process of drinking down, but only because I will be relocating overseas in 5-7. However, I have seen the Bdx prices drop here too...but not nearly as much as Costco - of course.
