2020 Antica Terra Chardonnay Aequorin

The nose shows an elegant use of reduction, wet stone, honey, and almonds perfectly framed by restrained use of oak.

There is a cool purity on the palate. It taste like rain water, but then the acid starts to build delivering a complex array of white and citrus fruits with the slightest touch of brioche on the long finish. Sometimes Maggie makes bigger wines, but this is so elegant and pure. Wow.

8/19/2023 8:33:00 AM - It’s definitely not a crime to open this now, but it will keep. A lot of wine makers in the Willamette limited contact with solids in 2020 due to the smoke, so the wines drink well young. This had lots of complexity for how young it was. If you prefer your whites with 5 years or less age I would say open now. If you like more mature wines with 8-10 years definitely hold.

Absolutely stunning. Sweet honeycomb and crushed oysters on the nose. Grapefruit and lemon on the attack followed by hazelnuts, honey, beeswax, salted caramel and satsuma all carried by searing acid and a strong thread of salinity that continues to deliver. This wine is infinitely nuanced and complex revealing something new with every sip. White WOTY.

https://www.winehouse.com/ has the current vintage in stock, but I found this 2012 randomly at https://thewineclub.com/ for $99. Definitely a steal for Grand Cru Chablis.

Took my Mom to Canlis (Seattle) last Thursday and splurged on a bucket list producer. First time drinking Roumier and wow did it deliver. The nose was maybe a bit shut down but the pallet was explosively elegant. Up front was the structure - strong spicy tannin, immediately followed by perfectly balanced acidity which cuts right through. Then the fruit hits… It start as a red sour cherry bomb and slowly evolves into blacker sweater fruits as it dances towards the finish. And wow what a finish. I can see how this wine will easily age for another 20 years, but as someone who is a structural taster I truly enjoyed drinking this young. Funny enough, if I had to draw a parallel to another wine I’ve had this year, it would be a 2014 Antica Terra Ceras. I came away from this experience floored by Roumier, but also with a new appreciation for the quality that Maggie is delivering down in the Willamette. Wine is fun.

4/18/2023 7:59:00 AM - Both wines are lovely but definitely the Ceras. The Ceras is more focused on minerality while the Botanica is more focused on fruit. In terms of how they compare to Chambolle, these wines are elegant, but not light. They are very soulful expressions of Pinot Noir so the comparison to Roumier works well, but not to someone like say Frederic Mugnier. If you like lighter expressions of Pinot, try and source the 2019 vintage. Antica Terra wines are often around 14% ABV, but in 2019 they are all around 12.5%.

    2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 are all incredible.
2015 is good, but was the hottest vintage on record.
2020 no wines were made due to wild fires and fear of smoke taint.

    I hope that helps!

Absolutely wonderful start to an evening of wine sharing and turned out to be super versatile with charcuterie. Shared by a good friend. A bit shy on the nose, but really complex and vibrant, especially with salty meats. A hidden depth for sure, overlaid with a bright salty topnote. Faint butter, sea air, and memories of an apple orchard. Excellent combination of richness and precision, and will certainly improve over time as it begins to show more effortlessly. My first Chassagne and won't be the last.

This wine is simply stunning… That is all…

I would seriously blind this as a high end Burgundy. Second bottle of this I have had a year apart from one another and boy what a difference a year makes. The funky nose has calmed down a bit and given way to a gorgeous bouquet of whole cluster spice. The acid is high.. It makes your jowls clench… After 10 minutes or so the structure starts to calms down and gives way to sappy fruit perfectly on the cusp of red and black. And it just lingers… like seriously forever… How is this wine so good? It was only $45… This is my last 750 ml, but luckily I have a double mag that will need to sleep for a few more years.

PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Leaf” day): Pale bright purplish ruby and incredible brilliant colors.

On the nose this is already living up to the ultra high expectations with changing aromas of red cherries, plums, then almost “grapefruit peel” like superbly detailed organic, juicy red berries. This quickly gives way to an incredibly vibrant bouquet of ethereal notes of complex sweet cinnamon spices, dried florals combined perfectly with the exuberant fruit notes.

Is there such a thing as “too perfect” on the palate? Darker red toned cherry fruits in their best way possible. There are some perfectly textured, silky tannins.

The finish is mellow in a nice way and almost endless here. Just “wow” and 96 points easy. Can still age for a very long time!

45 minutes, 2nd pour, 5/6 left: Incredibly fresh and intense still at this stage. Savory and lots of fresh spices to the finish. Very much a iron fist in terms of strong streak of saline minerality in velvet glove?

1 hour, 3rd pour, 4/5 left: Chocolate-like notes. Incredibly powerful yet retains its soft touch.

1 hour 15 minutes, 4th pour, 3/4 left: O.M.G. the nose of this pour is simply incredible! Exuberant exotic citrus and deep red fruits here. Upgrade to 96-97 points.

1 hour 45 minutes, 5th pour, 1/2 left: Probably hitting the perfect moment now with tons of great red fruits to balance out the superb bouquet of dried florals and spices. Still has many many years to go in cellar! 97 points solid.

2 hours 15 minutes, 6th pour, 1/3 left: Even more ethereal spices on the nose here. Just “wow”.

2 hours 30 minutes, 7th pour, 1/5 left: This is actually getting more and more tannic as we work on the bottle and this suggested longer cellarage required.

2 hours 45 minutes, last pour: Finally going back to integration and this is just getting more enjoyable at this final stage. Retain at 97 points. Think anyone else should take at least 3 hours or more to slowly unfold this!

3 hours, last “drip”: Giving more generosity finally, just lovely dark fruits, all integrated with what crazy amount of complexity this great terroir had to offer. Lots of respect here (and the incredible service here as always!)

Splash double decant. Deep dark ruby magenta color. Strawberry, black cherry, rich elder flower, white pepper, minty chocolate, raspberry, freshly cut cucumber, and subtle coconut on the complex nose. Smooth, dry, slightly spicy palate. Firm, full, lower intensity tannins on the medium long finish.

Fun, unique Spanish red blend. It’s a Spanish CdP in a sense. Got this as part of Maggie Harrison’s “the Collective” wine club (one ~ $100 bottle per month from around the world). It’s my little continuing education.

Tasted from magnum.
Still very young and disjointed. The oak still sticks out and the wine lacks overall integration to a worrisome degree.
A bit of a disappointment but there's a chance that time will help out this wine...
Almost tastes like a New World Chardonnay at this point.

  • Comment posted by Burgundy Bill:

7/7/2022 11:41:00 AM - It's pretty common for this wine to go through a disjointed phase. They are great young (up to about three years) then from age 4 - 8 they are pretty disjointed, and come back around at age 10.

It’s so rare to see an 05 look like it’s over the hill but I think that’s happening here. Was so good a few years ago but now seems to be falling apart. Let’s see what happens with the next bottle

  • Comment posted by Burgundy Bill:

6/30/2022 3:44:00 PM - Probably just an awkward stage. I wouldn’t dare touch this until 2025, and it probably won’t honestly be ready till 2030 - 2035. Just the unfortunate thing about old school Gouges.

Totally agree with two prior reviewers. This definitely punches above its weight, with a great red fruit nose, broad and deep on the palate with good spice. Loses nothing in the mid range and has a great finish.

Had a bottle of this just to try last night, and went out and bought the remaining 11 bottles of the case today. Worth seeking out.

  • Comment posted by Burgundy Bill:

3/22/2022 5:13:00 PM - I did the same thing. Drank one and went out and purchased 6 more + 3 magnums to lay down haha. Bottles like this make it hard for me to justify $80 - $100 on a bottle of domestic Pinot. Proof that there are still plenty of knockout wines in Burgundy for a reasonable price.

really nice Oregon PN, but overpriced, especially on the secondary mkt @ $150/btl. Drinking well right now

Looked advanced in glass, cork broke. Opened two bottles out of the 4 bought from K&L auction. Both cooked. Some nose straight out of bottle of vanilla and red fruit...quickly died. Really disappointing body was flat and soy sauce. So far hit rate with K&L is 0/6, can’t see myself buying from there again

6/10/2021 3:16:00 PM - I'm done with K&L auctions as well. Bought 5 bottles of 2011 Domaine de l'Arlot Clos de Foret St Georges... Opened 3 of them so far, and the wine is cooked. 0 fruit on the wine very bitter and no finish. Tastes like it sat in a hot car for a week.
