Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Sangiovese. Deep, opaque ruby. M+ dried Damascus rose, ripe black fruit, red fruit, dried herbs, tobacco and mocha from 18 mos., in French Oak. Dry, with M+ acidity, M+, silky tannins and high alcohol (14.5%). Full-bodied, with M+ to pronounced flavor intensity and length. A delicious, complex, big yet well-balanced Super Tuscan from Eastern Tuscany, it is drinking better now than 11 and 3 yrs ago. Probably has quite a few years left. WS 96.

12/26/2021 11:42:00 AM - That is interesting. Is the tech sheet specifically for the 2006 Oreno? I just wrote done what Sette Ponti’s website currently states. Other reviewers, like RP and sites (Kobrand) said the 2006 is 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cab. Sauv. and 25% Merlot.

  • Comment posted by TannicBeast:

12/26/2021 12:36:00 PM - Well done! You would think Kobrand would have gotten it right, since they are the importer. What are the percentages for the other vintages you researched?

  • Comment posted by TannicBeast:

12/26/2021 4:09:00 PM - Very interesting that they decreased the Sangiovese from '06 to '07 and then phased it out altogether and replaced it with Petit Verdot, making it much more of a Bordeaux Blend.

100% late harvested Verduzzo, the grapes are dried for 8 weeks before crush. Aged in Allier oak barriques for at least 12 months. 12,5% alcohol, 162 g/l residual sugar.

Moderately deep bronze color. Somewhat restrained but also very rich nose with aromas of syrupy molasses, vanilla, sweet toasty oak spice, a little bit of butterscotch and a hint of honeyed sweetness. Overall the nose seems to be heavily oak-driven. The wine is very sweet on the palate with full body and intense flavors of vanilla, caramel, syrupy molasses, some candied lemon marmalade tones, a little bit of extracted new oak spice, a hint of honey and a touch of butterscotch. The wine feels only medium in acidity; most likely the wine is quite high in acidity, but the noticeable sweetness and rich oak flavors seem to mask most of the acidity away. The finish is quite soft and very long with rich but somewhat dull flavors of vanilla, dried pineapple, some honey and a little bit of caramel-driven new oak. The aftertaste is very sweet and quite sticky.

An unctuous, heavy and very modern Ramandolo that lacks the freshness that is quite necessary for a sweet wine - this is just sweet and sticky with quite dull and excessively oaky flavor profile. Overall the wine just comes across too ponderous and heavily oaked with very little character of its own. Had this been served blind to me, I would've found it impossible to pinpoint this wine to any specific country or region. Might get better once the wine gets old enough, but I have no idea how long that will take. I love dessert wines, but this is more like sucking on a two-by-four oak plank covered in honey and caramel.

  • Comment posted by TannicBeast:

10/9/2021 8:56:00 AM - Usually your reviews are spot on. I think you just tried this Ramandolo too young. Vivino has quite a few tasting notes, and they are likewise favorable, without mention of excessive oaking. Try it again if you can find it! Cheers!

Tasted blind. Clear, medium (+) ruby, with thick legs and heavy extract. The nose is clean, with both tart and ripe black cherry and blueberry, dried herbs, violets and spice. I picked up on an earthy component, which pointed me towards Europe. The palate is dry, with medium to medium (+) tannins, medium (+) to high acidity and high alcohol (14.8%). I actually thought it was a Primitivo as this was not as jammy as I would expect from a CA Zin. It is still very youthful and probably has another decade to go.

Benvenuto Brunello Houston. Another home run from this top producer from the south side of Montalcino. Medium (+) to deep ruby, with remarkable concentration and extraction. The nose has really nice, youthful aromatics of ripe red cherry and savory herbs. There's plenty of sweet oak spice thanks to the 36 months of aging in large French oak casks. The palate is dry, dark and concentrated, with medium (+) acidity, medium (+) to pronounced tannins and high alcohol (14.5%). Full-bodied and intensely flavored, with a long finish, it is enticing now but it should really be put away for several years before opening. P.S. The 2016 tasting notes below must be referring to another vintage, to the Rosso di Montalcino, or to a barrel sample. By law this Brunello was not released until January 2017.

Still not sure about this wine. Still a massive brooding wine that just never seems to open, yet there is clearly some great juice in the bottle. This wine was almost in a dumb phase with very little fruit coming through. Will try again later this year.

  • Comment posted by TannicBeast:

7/4/2019 12:51:00 PM - For peak enjoyment, this wine must be decanted, as it has lots of sediment and tannic precipitate. It also benefits from a couple hours of air to help it open up. My $0.02 worth. Have a great 4th of July!

Decanted, due to the presence of sediment. Medium (+) ruby, with a garnet edge and thick, stained tears. The nose is clean, with medium (+) intensity, developed, complex, and of fine quality, with aromas of black cherry, cinnamon, mocha, indian spices, dried herbs. The palate is clean, dry, with medium acidity and medium plus tannins. The alcohol is high, but nicely integrated. Overall, the wine is very smooth, balanced, full-bodied, with medium (+) intensity and length. Contrary to prior some prior reports, I don't think this is anywhere close to the end of its optimal drinking window. I think WS missed this one with their prediction of "drink by 2016." WS 91.

Strong pinot nose. Likewise in the palate. Red fruit, lilac and other blossoms. Not too meaty/lactic. Medium acidity and soft tannins. While clearly this year is too young i would not store that wine too long.it is a mixture between a swiss and washington pinot. Not a bargain. While very well made i prefer a barrique pinot from the grisons (davaz uris or von sprecher) or then go for a burgundy.

Tasted blind. The color is medium (+) yellow, with a hint of green. The nose has a pronounced petrol smell, which overpowers the green apple, lime, and tart white peach aromas. The nose is developing and somewhat simple. The palate is dry, with searingly high acidity and medium alcohol (12.8%). Thankfully, the palate is quite cleaner than the nose, with both tart and ripe fruit, some nice minerality and a hint of bitterness on the finish. It probably should be drunk upon release if you are not a big fan of petrol nose. Other than that, it is a very nice, classic example of a cool climate Riesling.

We are tasting these as part of a Somm exam prep. We tasted blind a 2011 Rolf Binder Highness last week, and it was very similar to this Jim Barry. One problem is that these are the latest vintage releases on the shelves at the biggest wine store in Texas. The other problem is that I have never hung on to one for 8-10 years to see what would happen! Maybe I can shop around on the Internet and test your theory!

Tasted at a restaurant. I was looking for a glass to go with a dry cake, something with which Sagrantino normally pairs well. Simply put, I thought this was terrible. I sat with the glass for at least 10 minutes, trying hard to smell and taste past the oppressive influence of new oak, but to no avail. To quote one of my good friends, in my opinion, "This wine has no merit." Disappointing, because while odd, I do enjoy Scacciadiavioli's Sagrantino spumante. Rated -1 on a scale of -1 to 3.
