9/2/2023 - MC2 Wines Likes this wine: NR

This winery is right in my 'cheese house'. It's always a little more herbal and a little more spicy and darker fruits that sometimes come through but sometimes are overtaken by the rest. I think a bit more cabernet franc than some others. This was just drinking great. It's classic and structured and solid and while this might not have been the easiest year to make wine I think they made something that has really stood the test of time. Very enjoyable.

shared with pat, donna, giulio, frankie, ellen, mahesh, grandpa and grandma for thanksgiving at selkirk manor. i had held onto this bottle for sentimental reasons despite knowing that this wine had reached its peak several years ago. luckily, this bottle was still alive although rather sedate. the fact that this wine of relatively modest pedigree remains enjoyable 12 years past the vintage speaks to the quality of the terroir, fruit and winemaking technique involved in creating this product. robust dark fruit flavors have given way to soft florals. after 20 minutes in the glass it starts to fade. this remains my favorite chieti producer.

I bought this because it was recommended highly be our local MW, who compared it to Clos Rougeard at 1/10th the price. Clos Rougeard prices have gotten stupid, so I no longer drink them, and in fact my last tasting note on their Poyeux bottle was in 2013 (for the 2002 vintage) well before it eclipsed $100.

So to even put it in that category is a bold assertion, which I guess you can get away with if you're an MW. The color is a deep red and fully opaque just short of the bright cherry on the rim. The nose has a touch of appealing wet slate and cool red fruits, mingling berry, tart plum and cherry, with slight leafy overtones and hints of tobacco, cocoa and coffee in the background. That's a lot of stuff in a $40 bottle. So far so good.

The palate was stony and elegant, with restrained fruit given its youth. At first I felt there was some attenuation in the mid-palate but it smoothed out with an hour or more of air to a very attractive even sleek mouthfeel.

I don't remember the ghost of Clos Rougeard from almost nine years ago well enough to make a meaningful comparison but there's an air of refinement here that gives it almost a cru-llke quality. I'm not averse to disputing an MW (oh the arrogance!) but he's definitely on to something here.

From magnum. Brought to dinner with friends. Clear pale yellow color. Beautiful nose of tangerine, jasmine, and sea spray. Palate is full of stone fruit with a citrus and mineral finish. Such a pleasure to drink by itself or with food. Simply delicious.

Note: Similar experience a couple of months ago with a 750ml.

Steak and Syrah Night (Tuscany Steakhouse): Opened, but not decanted for about 45 minutes before pouring. Rich, smooth, and more like a Northern Rhone Syrah, than a CA or AU wine. Very enjoyable. Prior bottles felt very full bodied, but this one felt more mid weight.

2/3 of the reviews on this wine are by the same taster. That makes the average score quite questionable. What makes someone review the same wine 8 times, with basically the same notes and exactly the same 90 pt score each time? Does this have ant benefit? I certainly don't see any.

  • Comment posted by bacchus:

The other 4 reviews offer scores within plus or minus one point of mine so, statistically, there are no significant differences. Unless any wine under 90 is untouchable for you. My wine was served at a celebratory occasion. I enter notes to preserve the memories.

Nose is smooth and silky, dry cherry notes. Mouthfeel is very light, bordering on thin. The flavors are there but fleeting and the wine has a too little structure for me. Paired with a lasagna meal and it doesn't bring much to the table.

Off the by the glass list at Vaucluse on Thanksgiving. This was a nice festive start to the meal. Nothing particularly stood out on it. It was moderate bubbles and a hint of toast but mostly more in the clean, apple form. Went nicely with a tuna appetizer.

This wine NEEDS to be decanted for at least 4 hours. Trust me when I say that.

Just so dang delicious. The nose is full of intoxicating aromas of flower pedals, oak, licorice, blackcurrant, and so much more. PnP and this was smooth and finishing with sweet oak. This needs at least 4 hours of air from my experience of drinking Silver Oak wines. A lot of people drink it right away and do not get to experience the full potential. After 4 hours of air, you get spice, big fruit, and much more complexity.

I know the Napa Valley Silver Oak is more expensive and supposedly better than the Alexander Valley. I did find the Napa Valley to have a stronger nose and more depth in flavor but Alexander Valley is just as tasty. Maybe it's just my head telling me Napa Valley is better.

5/2/2016 - grapenomad Likes this wine: 100 points

This Edizione was bottled in 2015. After opening and decanting it for a whole day, the wine was still tight. Deep, ruby red with purple hues. Lots of finesse on the nose - not explosive, not restrained, just right. Massive blackberry and ripe blueberry, spices (vanilla, cloves, white pepper), green bell pepper, smoke and hints of rosemary and grassiness. Dry and full body with a thick texture, juicy acidity and tannins. Warming, balanced alcohol. Refreshing finish with a subtle oak note. Fresh fruit dominating the palate. Even though this wine has a huge potential, it is too young to drink in 2016 - the acidity is too crisp, tannins are sharp and the oak dominates most of the wine. Give it time.

Played Russian roulette last night with 2 of the 5 splits of this vintage that recently came into my possession, at a suspiciously low price point, from a consigner. One had a toenail in the land of the living, but just barely (a hint of fruit before it veered violently into the land of Vinegar), the other was DOA. So two blanks out of five shells...hopefully one of the remaining 3 will ignite.

Some Blind Cali Chards: Light gold color. Nose shows yellow apple, juicy peaches, lime zest, some honeyed tea and light almond elements. A creamy, richness to the wine but the acid cuts through and jolts it to life. Peaches, yellow apples, some papaya, kiwi, lime drizzled on top. Honeyed notes, along with almond and spiced tea, but it stays juicy and tangy. A lasting sense of mineral and river rocks, clean and bright, chalk and seashells. Very complex, could show a lot to the patient. A wonderful blend of sunshiny fruit mixed with pure, mineral elegance.

Leo's Blind Tasting Group - June '15 edition (Amali, NYC): Doesn't live up to its label or price point at all. Bright citrus and pear fruit and some stony mineral notes beneath that emerge with more air, but not a lot in the way of depth or complexity.
