Quite bright on the palate, cherries and cassis with a dark chocolate and coffee undercurrent. Medium body, well balanced. 4/30/2024 - HU Likes this wine: 92 pointsA cautious 92. PnP, then drank over three nights. Dark red, medium body, quite acidic and tannic. On day 1, it felt a little flat, almost thin. Green peppers dominant. Best on day 2 and perhaps 3, to be enjoyed slowly and sip-by-sip. Spices, earth, some dark fruits emerging. My best guess is that this is too young to drink now. I have 5 more and will wait until 2027 or so, before opening the next one. I am hoping it deserves a higher grade then. |

Last year did the same comparison with 2010s, and Lanessan was the winner as Cantemerle came off a little chunky and overdone. This 2014 Cantemerle is in a good place: very fragrant - violets and oak - and beautifully balanced on the palate between cherry and plum fruit, pleasant tannic grip, and fresh acidity. 2014 is really a drinker's vintage, I love it. The oak is a little too much for my taste. Will follow for several days and see how it evolves. On day 2 this is similar, while the Lanessan improved. Then pour yourself a nice sized glass of this beauty. Boysenberry, lavender, camphor and spring flowers explode in the nose. A cornucopia of ripe fruit—juicy red cherries, sweet dark berries, and plums. So fresh and clean. Spice box, rose, and violet add touches of feminine intrigue and pure elegance. I absolutely love this wine and bought two bottles immediately after tasting it. Ready to drink now but will age gracefully over the next decade or so. |
