Deep red garnet in colour, with a beautiful nose: cherries, red fruit and caramel tarte tatin. There’s sweet tobacco alongside the berries on the palate. Pale, neutral whitish-green color. The nose feels youthful and somewhat primary with aromas of chopped herbs, some appley fruit, a little bit of unripe pear and a candied hint of fruit drops. The wine feels crisp, tart and quite primary on the palate with a rather light body and somewhat thin and neutral flavors of wet rocks, some apple peel bitterness, a little bit of crunchy white currant, light candied primary tones and a hint of key lime. The bracingly high acidity lends great sense of structure and energy to the wine, but feels a bit unbalanced in relation to the light body and understated fruit. The finish is crisp, somewhat thin and medium in length with a bone-dry aftertaste of Granny Smith apple, some apple peel bitterness, a little bit of key lime, light crunchy notes of white currants and a hint of tangy salinity. A young, harmless and quite linear everyday white with tons of acidity and relatively little fruit and body. Furthermore, the overall feel is still very primary and at times even quite candied with its still rather prominent fermentation esters. I can imagine the wine might get a bit better over a few years as it loses those candied primary notes, but with its light body and understated fruit, this doesn't feel like a wine that could be aged for a particularly long time. All in all, I'm not impressed - and I wasn't the only one. The wine received zero points from the twelve participants in our tasting of ten Chenin Blancs, making it finish on shared last place. Palate of raspberry, dark fruit, vanilla and a fair amount of spice and pepper in the aftertaste along with some mineral/chalkiness. Some young oak throughout. The tannins are not wholly resolved and quite noticeable but are also not too intrusive. It is quite a dry wine overall and good with steak, although also quite nice to drink on its own. I got to know this wine on a KLM flight from Amsterdam to New York a few years ago. I was sitting next to a man I had never met, and he told me how glad he was when his mother died. I totally understood him and we shared a bottle or 2. So far the memory (the wine on board had a faint blush, this one is clearly white). This one: basket of very ripe fruit, getting to end of his/her life: plum, apple, pear, kiwi. Also a clear bitter/grapefruit tone, long lasting. Nice glass that was left tearing.
