AW94. Ah my two favourite wine loves combined: Sangiovese and California. This is the majestic 30-year old 1993 Atlas Peak, with Sangiovese grapes planted high up on the Vaca mountain range in the glorious Napa Valley.

So what is it like at 30 years?

It’s pretty wild and it’s really very good. Fascinating. There is still fruit and perfume and it’s not overtly port like that old Brunello often steps towards. Quick decant to filter and served. Italian perfection on Californian soil. Tuesday night? Cheers.🍷🇺🇸

Deep ruby with hardly any browning. Cedar and cassis nose. Medium bodied, bright red fruit, sage, evolved tannins, tar, and a sappy medium length finish. Delicious but no longer nuanced.

Utterly fascinating- a 27 year old Napa Sangiovese
I didn’t know of any but this is great
Initially comes across with a touch of ripe bovril elements but soon smooths out.
This is clean on nose, still carrying fruit and smooth delivery with a nice sappy finish
Very much in the Italian mode - 13.5 % ABV
Very good - a surprise

One hour slow ox. Deep dark brick red core, with less rim fade than you’d expect. Fig danish and cocoa dominate. Dry palate, with good acidity. Firm, medium intensity tannins on the medium long+ finish.

This is past its peak for my palate, but has held up surprisingly well. This was a gift and it was a nice wine education for me.

10% Petite Verdot from Anderson Valley. And that shows on the nose and all the palate. Tastes like Atlas Peak, which is not a compliment. Although if the woman sitting across from me is actually the young winemaker, she will be one to watch.

Retail $80. Heavy bottle. DIAM5. Fairly dark in the glass with a brooding, brambly nose of blackberry, plum, and black pepper. Even with some time open, this wine was shy, almost reclusive in the glass, but it was clear that there would be plenty to admire on the palate. Indeed. While the similarities to the slightly less expressive Atlas Peak Cab are many, this iteration, from the Atlas Peak appellation (yeah, it’s confusing) is richer, more expressive, more “vervy” (is that a word?). Plenty of depth and intrigue here: fruit, tartness, balance. The only element that is lacking would be tannins—they are integrated and silky smooth, so no need to cellar this puppy! Drink up! Outstanding.

Retail $50. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot. DIAM5. While I have tried more than my fair share of Napa Cabs, I would never claim that it is “my jawn” (Philly term). Medium color (at least for a Cab) in the glass with a sweet, fruity nose of black fruit (blackberry, cassis, plum), vanilla, and just a touch of chocolate. Yum. The palate is surprisingly reserved (particularly given the appellation) but good fruit, ample tartness, depth, and verve. Again, not my forté, but this is Excellent.

Fading crimson with large clear edges. Leather, blueberry pie, and spice nose. Medium to full bodied, crushed black cherries, black pepper, dusty blackberries, fully integrated tannins, a bit of heat, dark chocolate, and a long finish. This bottle was in its prime.

Opened a bottle last night and the nose was oaky with cherries. It was able to drink right away but got much better after 30 minutes. This Cab had fruit forwardness that calmed down to some dark notes, hint of chocolate, deep black cherry, and was pleasant throughout the night. It did not present as a fresh wine, but decently showing its age. IMHO, this is a well-made, every day drinking wine from a great year that aged well. If you have it, drink it because it's at or past its peak

Well integrated and drinking very nicely, big sediments abound. Weak nose but solid tannins balanced with fruits that are fading but very present. Holds up well to wagyu beef, perhaps not so much sharp cheeses.

Inky ruby. Lots of funk upon opening, then blueberries and oak spice. Medium bodied, plums, blackberries, tongue coating tannins, black cherry pie, smoke, good acid, and a tart, dry finish. A little less than I expected or was hoping for.

Had two bottles between four people at Ruth Chris Belle Grade plantation.

I agree with others lovely Cabernet, excellent fruit, soft tannins, cherry, cassis, currants maybe a touch of spice on the finish adding some complexity. Paired well with the Cowboy bone in rib-eye.

Dark purple with ruby highlights (once the sediment settled). Cassis, spice, and forest nose. Medium to full bodied, blueberries, blackberries, few remaining tannins, black cherries, sage, and a medium to long finish that tries to be dry, but doesn't get there. A little fat, but still a fine sipper.
