Very young. Popping red fruit, just a touch too alcoholic on the nose, a smidge of kirsch. Tannins very drying and chalky. Longish finish with just a mere suggestion of astringency. Better on day two- slightly smoother and collected. Very full and persistent mouthcoating palate of tar and young tannins. Savoury with a slightly vegetal leaning. Perhaps some whole bunch here?
I think there’s a lot to unfold here and it’ll reward five years of cellaring.

Decanted for two hours. Intense floral notes (violet and rose petal), ripe red and some ripe dark fruit, red currant, red cherry, blueberry, blackberry, marzipan, iodine, some chocolate, spices, and stony minerality, with high, fresh acidity, fine, firm tannin, and great persistence. Medium to full body, with good tension and good balance. Very young, but drinks well already, and should age well. Very different on day two, riper, more raisiny, and less fresh, but with notable VA, round tannin, and good balance, and still very appealing. A nice surprise; much better than expected!

At La Saracca

Ripe cherry fruit, roses and Luden's cough drops on the nose. The fruit is ripe, but not quite overripe, the acid a bit pointy, but improves with air. Fleshy but with excellent balance. I'm being a bit picky, but overall this is a very well made wine that speaks of its origins. Very good and since this was a BTG pour, I suspect a little more time with the wine out of bottle could show better.

Bottle off the wine list at 67PMSG. Drank in Zalto Burg glass from decanter. Frankly didn't need the decanter. Was good from the get go and opened up nicely in the glass.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of lifted red florals, ripe red plums, ripe red cherries and strawberries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (15%!), supple high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of juicy red cherries, lovely strawberries, red plum, balsamic and spices, stony mineral vein. Fresh leather with more air. Very long finish.
Very good quality. Some of these young Barbaresci are really drinking so well!

Decanted for four hours in the morning, poured over dinner. Medium ruby colour. Rose petal, red fruit, red cherry, iron and tar are joined by ethereal notes after extended aeration, with good acidity, fine tannin, and very good length. The alcohol is lightly warming (15% ABV). Good concentration, average complexity. Needs time. Hold. 90(?)

Far too young. Opened and consumed over 5 nights (kept corked in the fridge in between), this showed best at the end. Tannins are abrasive, but eventually calm down with sufficient air. Dark cherries, cloves and ground pepper. This will turn into something pretty special , but I won’t touch another for quite awhile.

Certainly an odd day on all counts. First, I am officially retired as of this morning. No paycheck for the first time in 38 years. Time will tell how that affects my wine budget but it remains a priority in the retirement plan! It's also entirely ominous right now as Hurricane Ida passes through central NJ overnight. Thoughts, prayers and donations to everyone affected. I was corresponding earlier in the day with a friend who is visiting Croatia and Fruili, reminding me of the three trips to the EU I've canceled in the last 18 months. Finally, I'm all alone today, so lots of time to think about the future and decide what to drink tonight. Celebrate doesn't quite seem like the right word. Somehow, better to open a bottle that rewards introspection, if not an outrighr vino di meditazione.

I've referred before to the case of 12 individual wines procured directly from a tour guide in Piedmont, most of which have no US distribution. So with Italy already on my mind I picked the oddest sounding name among them to an American ear, a Barbaresco from Azienda Agricola Quazzolo, with a tangled web of red yarn spanning the black label. Do they have cats? Given the fact that I bought it “direct,” there’s no importer’s label to either illuminate or confound what’s going on in the bottle.

I don’t know whether Quazzolo sounds more like an exotic antelope or a Spiderman nemesis. Nonetheless, the wine is a translucent garnet color. It definitely benefits from air, and at this juncture I’d recommend at least an hour. The nose is more deeply pitched than I would expect, showing notes that tend more to cherry and dark plum than any kind of berry, joined by leather light spice and a touch of alcohol, which isn’t strange given the labeled 14.5% alcohol. Medium-full on the palate with considerable tannic astringency that slams it shut to a certain degree. Would assume this has seen some barrel aging.

I let it sit for another hour or two and it began to fill out nicely, adding more plummy fruit, a little mocha, and a rounder, riper mouthfeel. Seemingly built to age in a traditional style with few if any concessions or compromise and would bet it could improve substantially from here. One to watch if I ever see another bottle in my lifetime.

Pale ruby. Reluctant nose. Light bodied cherry with some heat on a medium final. Fine tannins.

Does nothing to offend or excite particularly.

Strawberry and camphor on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, raspberry, and notes of rose petal and savory spice on the medium finish, with strong, smooth tannins and strong acidity. This has a nice balance of elegance and tannic bite. It was a good to very good value at about $40. This should be good for at least ten years or more.

This wine was all knees and elbows, totally out of sorts and no doubt going through some growing pains. All the pieces are in place, fine fruit, plenty of acid, in check tannins. But they don't come together as a whole, at least not yet. We'll see you again in five+ years.

Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): A small taste. I did not care for this one at all - lots of oak comes through on the nose and the palate and then there is a lot of polished fruit up front. Not my thing.

Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): This is the more modern style. When I say more modern what I mean is straight up modern. For me this tasted like chewing on oak chips. I am sensitive though so I can't say it would be like that for all. Higher alcohol again. Just too much. I couldn't bring myself to get to a third sip (one sip for first impression, second to confirm, third was just not appealing).

Dekantert 45 min. Bedre enn forrige flaske. Definitivt en barbaresco på den mer mørke siden, ikke at det er noe galt med det, men jeg foretrekker de mer typeriktige og lysere i stilen. Men en veldig bra vin til prisen (15 euro).

Good and "likeable" Barbaresco. The colour is a bit darker than most of the Barbarescos. Really soft tannins in this 2010. Personally, drink now ! For the money (20 euros), it´s a bargain. It doesn´t have the same depth as great Barbarescos, but it so tasteful.

Popped and poured. Medium garnet core, watery rim. Cherries, raspberries, dried fruit, floral perfume, liquorish and cedar-wood on the nose and palate. Medium bodied, fairly developed, smooth and nicely balanced. Pleasant and sympathetically priced. Drink before 2019.
