Italian Wine Scholar Class at The Texas Wine School. 100% Gaglioppo. Med (-) ruby. Unfined & unfiltered. Med to med+ tart red cherry, cranberry, fennel, licorice, medicinal herbs & some sweet baking spices from 18 mos. in large oak casks. Dry, w/ med+ acidity, med to med+, resolved tannins & med+ alcohol (13.5%). Med to med+ body, flavor intensity & length. A very nicely balanced wine, somewhat reminiscent of a quality Sangiovese, to which it is related. Drinking well now, with the potential to last several more years.

Cherry coke and coffee mix on the nose, high acid and lots of structure. Quite tasty

Popped and poured; enjoyed over several hours. The wine pours a deep garnet color with a translucent core and a brownish rim. Medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. No signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is vinous with powerful notes of desiccated and stewed cherries, leather, cocoa, teriyaki, anise, sandalwood and old damp basement. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with monumental tannin and relatively modest acid. I’m placing it at medium-. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and savory. I don’t have a lot of experience with Gaglioppo but I can see the appeal, particularly if one wants a burly wine with relatively modest acid. Drink now.

Wow, value wine from southern Italy that drinks well by itself and can't wait to try with the Tagliatelle. The Gaglioppo Grape is a new discovery for me but I will be back

I'm still not sure I know what Gaglioppo tastes like, unless it is contributing the slightly pruney note to this wine. Whatever the grapes, this is a nicely structured easy-drinking Italian red, more acidic than tannic. At $22, this is a good value, one of many high-quality Italian reds at that price point.

I think Jreis described the wine very well. Cherry and a bit of Earth on the nose. Notes of oregano on the palate. Very smooth entry with a bit of tannic bite, more of a nibble. Great with grilled meats.

A blend of Gaglioppo, Malvasia Nera, and Greco Nero, with the majority composed of gaglioppo. The wine reminds me of a hybrid of Grenache and Zinfandel with an Italian attitude. Plum, floral, and smokey notes on the nose. The palate is all red fruits, a bit of tannic bite, and appropriate acidity. It is not a flabby wine, quite enjoyable with a grilled steak for dinner

Popped and poured at cellar temp. Bright purplish red color, looks like a young wine.Somewhat muted nose with a bit of oregano, iron and black pepper. Really interesting, funky palate - bright, sweet cherry fruit combined with a very dry, dusty tannic structure. Should be fighting each other, but they actually combine pretty well. No idea what aging would do with this wine, but my sense is this would best be consumed young.

Fun to read various wine pros confidently assert this grape is either tannic, or that vintners struggle to extract any tannins from it at all
This iteration was most laughable upon opening as a screamingly aromatic, structureless blast of red cherry candy and what first seemed like barn (before becoming eucalyptus and valerian), barely saved from The Failed Policies of The Past by a bit of pine and savory or marjoram. It eventually calms down to conventionally good wine, albeit more smooth than elegant, over 3 days, but my remaining supply will be consumed right after sabrage to maximize its garish, disjointed Glory

Unless we get ambitious and open another bottle on a Sunday evening, this will be the final bottle on our tasting tour. After Sicily, we jumped back to the mainland -- Calabria to be precise -- and encountered a varietal that we had not tasted on this tour or any before it.

The Damis Reserva is produced from 100% Gaglioppo grapes planted to steep hillside vineyards above the village of Ciro on the Calabrian Coast. So far, we've encountered Aglianico repeatedly in the South but the Gaglioppo is nothing like that. Dense, almost brown when poured in the glass. Dark cherry notes from a very aged Barolo come to mind -- is it the heat of the south that strikes this resemblance?

Herbaceous mint complements the fruit. Quite round and balanced in the mouth. The sweetness of the cherry remains among the last remnants of a long dry finish. As the bottle empties and a melancholy of finishes this tour sets in, we look to tomorrow -- June 1st -- and another tasting tour, this time to Spain.

Very good. Some age seems to have helped this, and overall concur with Short & Confused notes, and nothing rough or coarse about it (from BVAL)--just the opposite--it's well balanced and moderate full/long, great with food.

Popped and poured. Focused red fruit aroma. Rich flavors dominated by plum, with notes of coffee, earth. A bit of licorice in the grippy finish. Full bodied, rich, complex, held together by a solid backbone. Still quite young, good aging potential.

Made from Gaglioppo grape, organic vineyard, stainless steel fermentation and aged in large botti. Decanted for 1 hr. From memory..more blue/black fruit flavors with just enough acids to uplift the wine, some herbs, and nice tannins for grip. Smooth texture and a vanilla flavor that made me think of new oak. Lacked the liveliness and personality that I look for in my wines. Perhaps overshadowed by acids in red pasta sauce. Not feeling it on this wine.

While this wine requires some time to open, it is elegant with an almost tawny color and a sweet bouquet redolent of honeysuckle and butterscotch. It has a silky quality on the palate, with red and black fruit, not overstated, and a seductive smoothness. Very nice.

The nose was intense, sweet and spicy, with candied cherry, exotic spices and sweet herbs. On the palate, I found zesty acidity giving way to minerals, blackberry, tart cherry, and citrus peel. It finished tart, zesty and mouthwatering, yet with saturating cherry fruits.

This wine is gorgeous and a great value ($18) As BVal says, there is chunky black fruit, tobacco, black pepper and a floral note. There are the dark fruits on the palate but I would also add that there is some salinity that streamlines things a bit. This was my last of 2 and I am bummed to see it go. I'll buy it if I see it again.

This is really nice. The last bottle was slightly off but this is spot on. It is very old world, mineral laden, chalky, and spicy. Really lovely acid balance here. Love the rusticity and the roasted spicy mouth feel. Don't think this could be from anywhere but Southern Italy.

Color: dark ruby core -> deep/dark ruby rim. Chunky nose of black fruits, tobacco, black pepper and a little floral perfume adding a touch of elegance. Chunky, foursquare palate of dark fruit and blackberries. Tannic, a little rough and coarse with a touch of bitters on the finish, this could use some big, flavorful foods to tame it a bit. I'd also say it probably could benefit from a year or two of sleep. Think I'll have the next bottle in 2018 with red sauce.

pretty one note but what a great note it is. this is still showing young because the tannins are medium intensity and have a sugariness ive only experienced in the more serious Paso wines. I would revisit this and love to try a bottle with ten more years age.

Went well with tomato and ricotta on cavatelli. May have also come settled down a bit since last tasting. Dark cherry and herbal nose. Rich mouth feel. I recall that when paired with red meat, the finish comes across as a bit too ripe and even candied. But with tomato and ricotta the finish did well.

Impromptu first visit to A16 (A16, SF): Grape is Gaglioppo.
The nose is distinctly aromatic and herbal/medicinal in a beautiful way. Pine tar. Floral. Super piney. Mentholated. Smoky tannins. Lovely bitterness.
Medium body. High alcohol. High acid. Medium grippy smoky tannins.
Anise. Rose petals. Used oak. Menthol. Liquorice bitterness.
This is fantastic stuff. Score: around 9
