Two stars in the Guide Hachette. 12 euros at Carrefour. What's not to like? The wine has high acidity and is a bit nondescript in the mid-palate, but these are quibbles about a champagne that is perfectly respectable -- biscuity and dry and complex enough -- for a low price. If you are rushing out to your local Carrefour to stock up, note that the wine will be much better with a few years in the cellar.

This is high-quality plonk, by which I mean that it is an inexpensive wine that is completely drinkable, with no obvious faults, but with no attributes (complexity, structure, depth, intensity) that would justify a higher price.

Carignan blanc is an unusual grape, a mutation of carignan gris that was used for blending in Languedoc and Spain but is now disappearing. There are two Ledogar cuvees of carignan blanc; we had the less expensive Vin de France with the butterfly label. Light color. Slightly musky aroma, with a fuzzy suggestion of geranium leaf. High acidity. Mineral. Herbal. Saline. The wine is too young -- it was much more rounded and approachable on the second day. On our trip through Languedoc, we drank several wines made from grenache gris and concluded that this is one's the world's underappreciated grapes. On the basis of this brief exposure to carignan blanc, I am not yet willing to conclude that its obscurity is undeserved.

12/18/2020 1:08:00 PM - Hi Talbot61 - thanks for your note. It appears we do have somewhat similar tastes. In recent years, I have transitioned more to Burgundy varietals (mostly Pinot Noir, but some Chardonnay too), and away from the "big" reds. While I still like a good Cabernet or Syrah with my steak or other rich foods, for most other occasions, I prefer to sip Pinot as my "go to" varietal. Enjoy!
12/16/2020 1:25:00 PM - I have found the site helpful at following the wines I have collected over the years. I compare my notes on a given wine to what other people say. Sometimes I find wines hit a sweet spot in someone's note and I will try a bottle before my scheduled time. I enjoy drinking wine mid plateau or later. I hope the site works for you.
