Improved over my last tasting 3 years ago. Classic, elegant cab franc. Extremely well balanced wine, high acidity, tobacco, red fruits, and specifically a pepper note, that reminded me of jalapeño. Paired wonderfully with my lamb chops for dinner.

Ouvert 30 min puis bu.
1 année depuis dernière bouteille, se développe bien.
Framboises, mûres, moins de poivron cette fois.
Davantage d’acidité et plus de poids.
Devrait gagner en précision et en harmonie ces prochaines années.
Ne fait pas dans l'esbroufe, valeur sûre.

Less Celebrated France WIMPS #176 26th April 2024 (La Trompette, Chiswick): A lot going on here; some strawberry fruit, some posh milk chocolate with hints of chopped date and some over-ripe Morello cherry. Palate is rich and balanced, hints of Lady Grey tea with some pomegranate squash. My wine of the lunch.

Intriguing nose of both red and black fruits (cranberry, boysenberry) and savory elements of tapenade, green pepper and a mineral note. Plenty of acidity, but also plenty of fruit, consistent with the house style. This has the stuffing to go the distance (another 12-15 years at least).

October 2023 Loire Dinner (Mathilde - SF): This wine, I felt, had more polish than the '09 Clos Rougeard Bourg I drank with it, maybe even “slickness” is a better way to describe it -- yet, there was a mineral depth and complexity to the wine as well...perhaps related to the own-rooted vines. Definitely fruit-forward (for Loire Cab Franc) though at this stage.

Dark ruby core with purple at the edges. Smelled mainly ripe ripe bramble berries of all colors, plus some iron and light earthiness and some jalapeño in the background; the taste was of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries. Medium bodied, with medium-plus acidity and not quite as much tannin, plenty of intensity, and a medium fruity finish.

Truly 'otherworldly' and very different from what one would expect from a Saumur-Champigny. Not rustic at all, nor freaky like some natural wines. Medium bodied but remarkably pure with great acidity. Nice long finish. Highly enjoyable and very elegant.

Light, delicious. Blueberries and bay leaf. Well composed and fresh. More blue fruit and spice, rather than the standard Cab Franc ‘cut grass’. The cool climate suits it well. A wine done very well. Very nice.

All around, very nice (very young) Cab Franc at a great QPR. Very tight at first, tannic, as expected, but opened up great in the glass. Would buy again.

Bel équilibre entre acidité et fruit, très belle longueur en bouche. Ce 2018 goûte déjà superbement, encore 2-3 ans de garde en feront un super vin. Mais déjà d’un rapport qualité-prix incroyable

Needed like 1 hour to open. Very nice nose showing tobacco, ash, red fruits, still some oak and violets.The palate is super juicy and crunchy with a drying lively finish. While this is not a wow wine it has a lot of nuances that makes it very interesting and appealing. I like it more the more I drink it, 93.

I go back and forth with these wines. From a technical aspect I admire them and how well they are raised. They are suave and I don’t mean that as pejorative. Aromatically, however, I wish the nose was more delightful and playful if that makes sense. If you have this wine in the cellar I would say hold it for a little bit longer with the hope that it starts to dance a little bit like Cab Franc can.

I'm on a newly started exploration of cabernet franc - I never drink the stuff, having not been enticed on the first occasions I tried it, way back when starting out as a more conscientious wine drinker. I bought three bottles, this being the first that I drink.

This was a really lovely start to my re-evalutation journey! It's a CF in a style that is very compatible with other styles of wine that I like, such as Beaujolais, Burgundy and atlantic reds from Spain. The tell-tale signs of the grape are there, graphite, currant, pepper and bell pepper but after some thought, the bell pepper is more red than green as the note while certainly there is subtle. The freshness is marvellous and this does not show "age" but maybe is more harmonious than a more recently bottled wine? I really like it. 12,5% alcohol is a real advantage as well, rare to find that even in Beaujolais or Burgundy in later vintages.

NOSE: tangy, red/purple fruit mix, perhaps with plum leading the way; light stony mineral note; seems fairly open. I thought I caught a whiff of something mousey, and this was later confirmed when Ash, without me having said anything, stuck her nose into her glass and immediately said “this smells yeasty” (she’s not familiar with “mousiness,” exactly).

BODY: ruby-violet color of medium-shallow to medium depth; medium-light bodied.

TASTE: flashy, with medium acidity; little bit of medium-fine tannins; light leather jacket note, especially on the finish, which is fairly persistent despite its medium-light intensity; slightly smoky, with some light purple berries, too --- not terribly dissimilar from Baudry’s “Guillot”, which goes for approximately half the price; definitely a touch mousey. I guess this is pleasant enough, if you can look past some mousiness. For me, this is flawed, and I would generously score it in the low to mid 80s. I imagine this would be excellent without the mouse.
