Decanted for 1 1/2 hours, served in a Riedel Old World Syrah Glass. Opaque ruby colour.

Nose: Dark cherries, bramble and hints of elder berry come through towards the beginning. Dried savoury herbs, notes of meat, earth and coffee appear afterwards. On the way out, aromas of shaved dark chocolate and menthol make themselves known.

Palate: Cherry, cranberry and red currant on the palate, slowly morphing into notes of savoury herbs, dark chocolate and cured meat. Powerful tannins and fresh acidity. Dark cherry, savoury herbs, earthy notes and dark chocolate on the finish.

2019 Enrique Mendoza Pinot Noir Alicante

A single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Alicante. Aged for 12 months in barricas. 14,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Translucent and somewhat evolved cherry-red color with a slightly maroon-brown hue. The nose feels sweetish, sunny yet somewhat dull with aromas of ripe strawberries, some tobacco, light evolved notes of dried dark fruits, a little bit of forest floor, a hint of blackberry jam, a touch of blueberry juice and a musty whiff of mushroomy funk. The wine feels broad, sweet-toned and rather heavy-set with a full body and slightly jammy flavors of strawberries, some cooked red fruits, a little bit of soft dark plum, light blackberry jam tones, a boozy hint of alcohol and a touch of dull earthiness. The overall feel is rather blowzy and lacking in structure, thanks to the low acidity and ripe, almost nonexistent tannins. The finish is soft, warm and sweet-toned with a jammy, medium-long aftertaste of black cherries, some stewed strawberries, a little bit of soft dark plum, light earthy notes, a tertiary hint of meat stew and a touch of dried dark fruits.

A soft, dull and heavily overripe Pinot Noir that doesn't really show any varietal character - just jammy fruit flavors and way too much alcohol. The overall feel is way too fat and blowzy due to the lack of structure, making the wine a chore to drink. Furthermore, I was surprised how young the wine was, because its evolved qualities made me think of a wine twice as old. There are very few spots that suit Pinot Noir and, based on this wine, Alicante is not among them. At approx. 11€, this wasn't a pricey wine, but it didn't manage to deliver for the price. Avoid.

Wird der Wein mit dem Alter nochmal besser? Hätte ich mir tatsächlich noch ein paar Flaschen aufheben sollen? Ein wirklich toller Wein auf seine alten Tage. Schade, dass es die letzte Flasche ist.

Tasted blind. Dense, tangy raspberry. That’s my go-to tasting note for barbera, so that’s what I’m going to guess here. Light oak. It adds to the wine, which is otherwise one dimensional. Appropriate tannins. A well-constructed wine with good concentration. Rating: 90.

I would suggest this can sit in the cellar for another couple of years, but one nevertheless not expect too much in reward. Leather, blackcurrant, pepper, stewed unripe strawberry on the palate, dry and pretty acidic. Not a solist, good for cutting through heavy foods.

clean medium dark ruby. Classy Mourvedre
nose showed medium intensity and was actually rather mature. tannin medium, acidity medium. Should hold a few more years but I’m questioning my current drinking window (I have a bottle waiting for 2029)

Excellent wine at an incredible pricepoint. Complex nose with some earthiness, red tart fruit, some spices and a little hint of oak. On the palate good structure, nice acidity, and minerality

Approaching the end of my "Enrique Mendoza Adventure" with this lovely Santa Rosa made from 70% cab. 15 % merlot and 15% shiraz. Having already tried his Dolc De Mendoza, Estrecho and La Tremenda I knew I was in for a treat. The nose is spectacular with a deep and intense nose of black currant, bay leave and sweet vanilla. The taste is delicate with sweet notes of dried cranberries and powerful notes of black pepper and blood. Great acidity and fine tannins gives this wine a really nice structure.

When it comes to mourvedre/monastrell I really feel close to heaven when I put my nose in the glass. This wine has many of elements I love - pepper, black currant, dried meat, a little bacon fat, soya. However, I find this wine to be just a little unbalanced. The alcohol gets too hot for my taste and the tannins are very predominant. Maybe 2-3 years more in the cellar will help shave off the hard corners of this wine.

100% monastrell is quite a rarity. In my opinion this wine is to young to drink in 2018, but the nose is spectacular. 3 years from harvest and already I sense hints of damp forrest floor and truffles. Add pretty notes of sour balsamic vinegar, blackberry, savory elements of pepper, rosemary and loads of acidity and that's why I believe this wine will evolve into something magical in 10 years time

A bouquet of blackcurrant, cherries and fresh red fruit. 36 months in french oak also adds to the complexity without being too vanilla-ish, "over the top" and overoaked. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, smoke, and sweet spices like cinnamon and cloves are all evident. Sweet and intense with very low tannins. First fruits, then smoke and chocolate and lastly an acidic "kick" to the finish. It's packed nicely and sealed with a very pleasant sweetness from the residual sugars left from the fermentation.

I find this 2015 vintage to have the same characteristics as the 2014. Intense black and red fruit combined with spicy notes of bay leaf, pepper and vanilla. This vintage however seems to have a little more power and a little harder tannins compared to the 2014 vintage. Give this bad boy 5-10 years in the cellar to shave off the hard corners and I'm pretty sure this wine will show very very well. Wow, not bad at all...

Grande Enrique - the Pride of Alicante, here with the steel tank-matured high-altitude La Tremenda Blanco, a blend of 85% Savvy B & 15% Merseguera. Admittedly, I had never heard of Merseguera (Wiki explains: ”a Spanish wine grape variety planted primarily in Alicante, Jumilla and Valencia”). Deep straw yellow with golden reflections in appearance. V expressive nose - ripe stone fruits, peach, yellow apples, mango, pineapple, slightly stale & unintegrated warm palate, decent acidity, honeyed edge & OK, brief finish.

A bit of a one note wonder, but it’s a rather nice, fruit-forward note, especially for around $12. Flavors and tannins all well integrated at this point. Moderate minus complexity and not much finish, but again it’s a perfectly pleasant wine when you want something on the fruit forward and fresher side that’s not too extracted or candied.

Colour: medium(+) purple
Nose: medium(+) intensity, secondary, youthful. Black plum, black cherry, blackberry, ribena. Cedar, cocoa, nutmeg, cinnamon. Liquorice, cough syrup. Garrigue herbs. Warm red earth. With air, more red fruit, including red plum, strawberry, Davidson's plum.
Palate: dry, medium(+) tannins, medium acidity, high alcohol (14,5%), medium(+) bodied. Medium(+) intensity, medium length finish. Black plum, black cherry, blackberry, ribena. Cedar, cocoa, nutmeg, cinnamon. Liquorice, cough syrup. Garrigue herbs. Warm red earth. With air, more red fruit, including red plum, strawberry, Davidson's plum. Dark and intense.
Conclusions: very good. A reminder why Spanish Monastrell is a firm favourite. Very good value for money. Can drink now, but suited to further ageing.
Seal: DIAM5 technical cork
DAY 2: seems a bit more open, and with red and black fruit character dominating more. Still lots of warm red earth, but maybe less liquorice? Either way, maybe not the best choice on a very hot day -- but enjoyable anyway!

Medium ruby, with medium intensity, developing aromas of violet, raspberry, burnt plum, coulee, blackberry, black, currant, Cedar. This wine has high alcohol and medium plus body with, medium plus tannins and acidity.
This wine has flavors of burnt raspberries, cedar, blackberries, black pepper, tar, and slight tobacco. This wine has a medium finish and a creaminess that you wouldn’t expect with a red wine. This is a good wine that should be drunk now in the next four years.

What stands out is the burnt plum flavor and a relatively short finish, which is disappointing.
