The ‘2016 L'Alleu Vinyes Velles’ is a generous and extremely well-balanced Montsant wine, made from 40 to 80 years old Garnatxa (70 %, vineyard ‘El Tros del Coix’) and Samsó vines (Carinyena, 30 %, vineyard ‘El Clot de l'Abella’). Only 4000 bottles were produced. The family winery is located in the municipality of Marçà, about 30 kilometers west of the city of Tarragona (Catalunya). The wine was aged for twelve months in French oak barrels. Decanted one hour prior to tasting. Dense garnet-red in color with some purple tinges and a voluptuous nose offering scents of raspberry, cassis, licorice, lavender and a hint of leather and black pepper. The powerful but elegant palate is marked by lush berry and plum fruit, a velvety texture, beautifully integrated tannins and a fine acid structure. Long complex finish. A good companion for game and stew dishes. Superbly drinking now, but also promising for the next 3–5 years. An incredible value for the money.

Voortreffelijke prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding.

13.99. Abv 14,5. 80 grenache 20 carignan. Decanted. With a bbq chicken pizza, at home. Notes after 1 hr. +. Dark purple and bright, aromatically clean, fresh, c/o Blue and dark red fruits, violets, palate is coiled, flavors consistent with nose, clean , nice length in the finish. Acid is medium, adds some lift. No detectable oak, vanilla or baking spice thankfully. Tannins are medium + with slight grip. V good qpr and enjoyed it.

Total production 1,250 bottles.

Very dark, almost completely opaque blackcurrant juice color. Very expressive, clean and fragrant nose with aromas of crushed blackcurrants, ripe raspberries, some brambly dark berries and a hint of floral elegance. Upon opening a faint prickle of carbonation that blows away almost immediately. Light, crunchy and refreshing on the palate with very high, almost crisp acidity. Pure flavors of freshly picked dark forest berries, tart blackcurrants, some herbal bitterness and a hint of sweeter cassis notes on the tip of the tongue. Quite grippy with moderately high tannins. Clean, crunchy and slightly bitter finish with pure dark berry flavors, some tannic astringency, a little stony minerality and a touch of flint smoke. The astringent tannins give the aftertaste a slight touch of herbal Fernet Branca bitterness.

A really delightful, pure and crunchy wine with good focus and tremendous structure. Feels light and harmless but packs surprisingly much punch and power. Good depth of flavor. I really can't say whether this light and fruit-forward wine will develop in the cellar or not, but at least its high acidity and prominent tannins promise much in the way of aging potential. Infinitely charming stuff. Although the grippy tannins might reduce the drinkability a bit, the wine is still really delicious and moreish. Probably best when paired with something simple and straightforward. Ridiculous value at only 5,90€.

Honestly, this wine is so oak-laden that I could hardly choke down a glass. Even after tons of air and trying over several evenings, this was all wood, all of the time. These cheap Spanish garnacha's are so predictable.

This is a very nice, reasonably priced Montsant. Raspberry/cranberry, wet slate/cement. Very good with a simple meal (in my case, a simple salad with oil/vinegar and a bean salad) but also an easy sipper with some air. Salud!

Popped and poured on the first night/first half of the bottle. Explosive blueberry nose right off the bat. A little earth, some leather, and a touch of raspberry as well. Quite acidic on the pallet. I can tell right away that these needs air or food or both. Good solid tannins. Dinner's coming so I'm going to wait to rate it with food. But first, the finish is nice and long and rich. I'm tasting it a minute and a half later. Really nice with food. So much fruit there. Gets a little hot for me (which almost NEVER happens). I like this. Better than expected.

I brought this to last night's decadent party in Anguin. Very bright berry flavors at the front of the tongue, with pleasingly well-balanced structure. This wine didn't suffer from being paired with extremely spicy fajitas, but unfortunately was competing for attention with two bottles of Caymus Special Selection Cab. I don't know how much it cost (it was a gift) but I would buy it for $25 and under.

Big nose of spicy, stewed fruit. Palate loaded with flavor and complexity, but still well balanced with acid and tannic structure. Should improve in 3-10 years.
