Dark, unctuous, surprising amount of primary dark fruit left even after 20+ years. Notes of cocoa, tobacco underneath blackberries and dark plums. Smooth tannins, very well integrated at this point. Wish I had more.

What a surprise! Defying all odds pouring from a clear glass bottle, this syrah is still very much alive and showing notes of chocolate, dark fruits bordering on plum but not quite plum, and moderate resolved tannin. Umptuous. This wine shouldn't be this good at this age, but it is. I want more. It looks older than it drinks.

Medium ruby/maroon with some staining. Nose is black currant pastille, a little stemmy, a little floral. Perhaps just slightly sweet on the palate, mid-bodied but lots of oomph. Good balance and length, and in the zone, no sign of being done at age 20. There is a glyceral effect that I often note in Mourvedres, which isn't my fave thing, but here it's OK.

This bottle was aging nicely, with some mild nuttiness and little fruit flavor residual. It also had a little bit of Chardonnay-type bitterness in the late-middle of the mouth. Smooth finish.

Similar to the first bottle, but noticed the high alcohol more with this one. Strange wine.

14.8% abv. From a recent auction "mystery pack" of well-stored Herb Farm collection wines.
Very "heavy" red, with strong American oak influence and very, very creamy mouthfeel. Lots of ripe fruit as well and aggressive acidity to go with it. This wine wants to make its presence felt!
In any case, I found it all a bit too much of everything and the very creamy mouthfeel just seemed weird. I finished the whole bottle over two days, so it wasn't terrible, but I'm not really looking forward to the 2nd (of 2) bottle.

Much improved. A little disjointed initially but melded after 60 minutes open. Smooth, medium full with tannins. Nice syrah nose with fruit and more on palate.

Open in the bottle for about 3 hours; initially it was hot, flabby, ripe, bitter. Very disjointed, no balance. Now it is settling down nicely: nose is dusty leather, savory herbs, still hot but not offensively so. Palate is very ripe plums and black cherries, cherry licorice, root beer notes. Its good acidity carried the richness though. Paired with a pan-seared ribeye and charred broccoli with curry sauce; honestly it was a pretty bad match, it definitely drank better on its own. It’s not life-changing but definitely in a decent place now, so maybe I should have just decanted it?

Update: left one glass-worth in the bottle in the fridge over two (!) nights and it really hasn’t changed very much. If anything it is somehow more juicy and balanced: pure cherry juice with a bit of cranberry freshness and a woody, brambly sort of bitterness on the finish. I definitely should have decanted it and maybe served it a bit cooler than I did on day 1 : )

Giving 99 because there can't really be such a thing as a perfect bottle of wine. On the other hand, I am completely unable to identify any flaw in this wine, so perhaps I should have gone with 100.

This wine is fabulous. It's smooth and deep and full of fruit. If I had any means of acquiring more, I would. (I just drank my last bottle. :-( )

This is the best bottle yet of the 3 I bought last Fall. Very dark ruby color.
Opaque. Savory blue fruits. Some garigue. Tar. Fine grained tannins nicely integrated with the fruit. Very lively for a 20 year year old Washington Syrah. A great bottle.

Tasted after 30 minutes of air. Hot alcohol. Some fruit but it has mostly faded. Medium acid provides some balance but the high alcohol just throws this off kilter.

Surprisingly nice, given its age! A little sharp, liquorice flavor followed by juicy, black cherry, with a smooth finish. It went well with ground turkey with pasta.

Its been 4 years since last bottle...very different experience and hoping (maybe) just a bad bottle. I have a couple left.

Smelled sweet/confection sugar when first opened. Lots of heat, and candied sugar on this bottle. Not spoiled (corked or oxidized) just kind of stewed in a sickly sweet way. Waited it out for a couple hours then dumped it.

Will save ratings, hope this was a one off..

Wonderful experience, love Boushey fruit used correctly - not overpowering like so many WA syrahs from Walla Walla.

Probably drinking best now, but wouldn’t be surprised if it evolved into something wonderfully old world in another 5-7 years.

Brought up from mid-50sF cellar 2h before serving, opened and did not decant. No issues from being too old, but ready to drink without needing air. Very impressive flavor profile. I'd say probably best to drink during 2020.

This was a near perfect Syrah. It sung for four days and I'm just finishing my last glass now. Tannin are completely resolved and more on the meaty/bacon side than the olive brine side. Sadly my last bottle.
