From Mencia to Nederburg (Mato, HK): Acidity moderate, still enticing with mainly tertiary profile. Past peak. Should drink ASAP.

Cork was in good shape, a little stained at the bottom. Decanted for one hour. On the nose a bit oak, cinnamon, subtle red plummy fruit. Full bodied, supple and rather smooth, showing cinnamon, oak and subtle red plummy fruit with good tannic bite and nice acidity. Still youthful with a firm and balanced bordeaux-ish twist. Very good.

Medium golden colour. Pronounced nose with apricot, fig, orange marmalade, honey, dried apricot and beeswax. Pronounced taste of apricot, fig, orange marmalade, honey, orange, dried apricot, beeswax, dried peach and pineapple. Long and sweet finish. Medium (+) acidity. Medium body. A very good dessert wine made with the Botrytis mushroom, although it lacks the complexity of more developed sweet wines. Goes well with desserts made with tropical fruits.

I was not expecting much, or indeed, anything as this was one of those bottles that has been lurking in my cellar for way too long. First impressions were positive, it smelled distinctly fruity with a touch of leather. Decanted (throwing a heavy sediment) it was a deep garnet colour with pale garnet at the edges in the glass. Soft forest fruits, autumn leaves, a touch of raisin, balsamic and leather. Really rather nice but definitely for drinking up if you have a bottle that has been lucky enough to last. I had it with Italian stewed pork with porcini and juniper berries.

Lurid purple colour. Quite textbook: blackberry, blackcurrant, ink, tar, and a tonne of oak. It's fresh, fruity and crisp. Nice long finish, minty. It's a bit like smoking a menthol cigarette.

Tried alongside the 2018 vintage for comparison
(the 18 has a bit more balance due to a drier feeling from bottle-ageing, but lacks the zesty aromatics of the 22):

Appearance:
Pale golden colour

Aromas:
Nose is very youthful and fruity, showing lots of tropical and stone fruit: fresh apricot hits the hardest (with an unfiltered, lovely pungency); pineapple, mango, orange blossom.

Palate:
What strikes you first is the sweetness, that mixed with the fruit makes for a juicy and promising impression.
The body doesn't seem as rich as the aromas, making for a disparate hollowness. I waited for the acidity to come and tie up the finish, but it stays mellow and thus the whole feels unbalanced and a bit of a let down (compared to the energy in say sweet riesling or -chenin blanc). The alcohol (being low at around 11% abv) is neither integrated nor out of balance.

To sum it up:
It is a fun, aromatically brilliant wine which has enough of balance and zest for the un-initatied wine drinker.
Great to bring to a party or dinner without any expectations.

The price point is a good one, but far from a bargain if looking at other sweet wines of the world (that manages to bring great freshness and drive).

Tried alongside the 2022 vintage for comparison:

Appearance:
Wine shows noticeable age on colour with clear caramelization (looks like a diluted verdelho Madeira).

Aromas:
Nose is a bit subdued (medium intensity) and mostly tertiary aromas: caramel, figs, dried apricot, dried orange-zest, honey, toast.

The fruit is in the tropical spectrum (apricot, pineapple) but subdued and there is very little primary fruit left after four years of bottle age.

Palate:
a dry sensation with a toasty feel. Dried fruits galore (see above) and a faint hint of VA (somewhere between terpentine and licoricy-medicinal).

The bottle age has given the wine some balance, diminishing the juxtaposed sweetness (that in the young wine overpowers the M acidity). I really like the added dry feel of this example but the wine is slightly dull (if served at around room-temp.)

Interesting with age, but not worth the time or money when there's so many great examples from eg Sauternes, Loire that has greater acidity, balance and thus more benifits with bottle ageing.

Chenin blanc (48%), Riesling (18%) and Muscat de Frontignan (30%) with a few percent of other varieties
Coppery gold this was extremely unctuous and sweet, tasting of raisins but without any redeeming acidity. Out of condition but while the other sample was fresher it still cloyed. CHP 81pts

Paarl Vintners Red Wine Tasting 2002 (Windmeul Cellars): (Tasted Blind): Subtle nose with notes of cold cream (Nivea) giving that light lavender feel mixed with plum and a touch of vanilla pod. Fruity with a lavender note on the palate, the wine is linear, lacking much stuffing. A bit simple, with some meaty elements on the tail of the wine.
Blend of 50% Philadelphia and 50% Durbanville fruit, with the Durbanville portion coming from Alto Cadart for the auction reserve. Undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks until reaching 18 brix, utilizing pump overs and rack and returns techniques. Malolactic fermentation can sometimes pose challenges for merlot and Shiraz. The wine is aged in second-fill chardonnay barrels starting in July. It has a pH of 3.46, a total acidity of 6.3, and an alcohol content of 14.5%.

Paarl Vintners Red Wine Tasting 2002 (Windmeul Cellars): (Tasted Blind): Aromas are herbaceousness with distinct nettles and minty notes. A medium-bodied wine that offers a satisfying mouthfeel and concludes with a lingering finish.
The grapes are sourced from the Philadelphia area. Young vines picked at 25 B. Blend of two blocks. Acid is added after malolactic, after which it spends three weeks in barrels. The pH is 3.55, and the TA is 7.09; Alcohol is 13.6%. For the fermentation, the tanks undergo a delestage (rack and return) daily, followed by pump overs with irrigation. The wine matures in 50% new and 50% second-fill chardonnay barrels. Used for their cab reserve and auction blend.

Mineral notes on the nose. Medium bodied, very dry and crisp, showing ample grapefruit and stony minerals with firm acidity and slightly austere finish. Overall very good. Had a bottle with the seafood at Celebrity Constellation.
