2019 Rocche Costamagna Barolo Rocche Dell'Annunziata

Nebbiolo more

Bottle #1 of 3. Presents a full 2" agglomerate DIAM 10 cork in perfect condition. Decanted 2 hours. Right ruby with a watery rim. Aromas and flavours of dusty leather, sweet red fruits, cola, oak. Medium-full body, high acidity, XD, high tannins that stick to the roof of your mouth, medium-high alcohol (14.5%). Medium-long finish. No significant change on the second day.

Look, you could drink this now with a rare steak, but it's not a cheap bottle. If you want to get your money's worth, wait until 2030 or so.

A pale medium red, a bright sheen to it. Lovely nose, wafts of cherry, flowers and bitumen, a swirl brings it all to the fore. A bit brutal on the palate upon opening in the morning, but immediately recorked and then benefitted from 12 hours before being broached in the evening by which time it was completely different and considerably softer. Don't get me wrong, they don't disappear, but this definitely needs with air or time. It was not quite as compelling as the 2017 Massolino, but it had a very elegant purity to it, quite a racy wine, crunchy fruit and a tangy acid core. Took this to a local Sardinian restuarant where matched the veal very well. Plenty of time in hand here, and excellent value.

Light-footed and very perfumed. Lovely sweetness and fruit purity and touch of menthol - alcohol neatly integrated and really pleasurable.

Sour cherries and raspberries, high acidity, grippy tannins, purity and elegance, real sense of place. Just what I’m looking for in a Nebbiolo. A runaway bargain year in, year out.

Nice ripe acidic red fruits - very much cherry leading the charge - with a nice ‘floral edge’ (I suppose if pushed you could put roses, but I’m not convinced it’s exactly roses).

Good mouth-watering acidity to match our lamb and fennel stew, and plenty of mouth puckering furry tannins. Lovely crowd-pleaser it is too, has got me wondering to myself whether I bought enough 2015's. .

PnD for about an hour and a half. Writing as I taste, I find this to be a lovely Barolo. Ruby to the rim. Very pretty and elegant, indicative of the vineyard site. Red fruits, a touch of mint. Quite smooth on the palate, in fact one of the more velvety Barolos I can recall tasting. Has nice weight and grip, but friendly and approachable. Not a tarry, meaty, damp earth style, but that is not Rocche dell'Annunziata. Drinking very well right now, no need to wait, but no threat either in my opinion. Conveys a classy, well-made, quality wine.

Shows a ruby colour in the glass with just a hint of bricking starting to emerge. On the nose the wine is earthy and smokey. Slight darker fruit profile on the palate - a smooth, silkier style of Barolo with quite soft tannins. Lovely wine and very good value.

Light translucent red. Fragrant red cherry nose, floral and inviting. Far more approachable than I would have thought possible to be stage, it's drinking beautifully. Strong acidity coupled with bright red fruit, very pretty in nature, light and breezy. For a young barolo it's astonishingly ready. Maybe the half bottle format means it's more advanced? Really enjoyed it, lovely. At Osteria dei Sognatori, Alba.

This is lovely - as Rocche Costamagna always is in all vintages for me - light bodied, low tannins, red fruits, merest hint of liquorice, not-so-serious (and reasonable acidity) and very much good to go so soon after the vintage…

But lacks 'bant' in this vintage. Fun, but not the depth and seriousness for extended cellaring, so clearly for early drinking. (And nothing wrong with that).

Drinking well now. 1 ½ hrs in decanter.Pale ruby - quite closed at first. Bouquet of rose, cranberry, good structure- legs up to about 2 cm. The complex nose well matched with a long palatal finnish with plenty of acidic counterpoints on the tongue. Lovely with beef.

Last bottle. As previous nearly 2 years ago now, except this time a 2-hr decant sufficed. Clearly on plateau. Learning experience that good barbera needs time like most everything else of this quality.

Dark ruby color. Young looking. Nose of blackberries, black cherry. Spice, mineral. Similar on the palate with good depth of fruit, slight pleasant stewed character with a nice tannic background. Drinking nicely if you like some power and youth to your wine.

It can be said that often we should judge a winery not by its top wines but by their lessor offerings and attention to detail. Rocche Costamagna is doing an incredible job here.

Brilliant table wine. My son has said often that it says a lot about a winery when their lesser wines truly out perform. This winery is noted for delicious delicate and subtle barolo wines... particularly at the riserva levels.

The wine starts out as violet with a fragrant flower like nose. In mouth the wine was less complex than expected but shows a different kind of richness. The palette is dark chocolate and as such similarly flat and one dimensional. I think this wine is just ok.

Upon opening, some bricking noted. Decanted this one hour, but that wasn't really necessary. Nose initially roasted fruits, roses, liquorice and leather. Palate dry and sharp, initially well balanced between acidity, tannins and fruit but over the dinner hour the acidity won out.

This strikes me as a modernised Barolo, a bit lighter, less tannic and more fruit forward than in the past. Sorry, but I prefer traditional Barolo wine making.
