Note: I use the recommended scale so 85 represents a very good wine.
Excellent bottle, even smoother ion Day 2 than Day 1.
Benefitted meaningfully from an hour or so breathing.
No need to decant, but do not pop'n'pour.

January 2024 Northern Rhone Dinner: Definitely the red wines' “gobbiest” of the night (GOTN): laden with a heavy-handed dark fruit, a velvety, almost viscous texture, and slightly ponderous; I wouldn’t call it a bad wine, but not one I plan to revisit.

Dynamo hummm yum. Sabon is on! Sweet raspberry liqueur, kirsch, plum, garrigue, stones, bit of blood, fat, and tobacco all in perfect, creamy, velvety, acidic, tannic harmony.

Domaine Roger Sabon - Chateauneuf du Pape - Reserve 2018. Deep red in color. The nose is filled with dark, ripe red and black fruits in combination with some roasted meat. Some nice pepper! The mouth got some fine tanins and has a great richness. Overall medium bodied and at the moment (for me) in an perfect state !

Love this Domaine an can't wait to be there in June :-)

Cheers !

Nice fresh, red berry nose.
Palate not so good; nice initial fruit, then a little muddiness, and a woody bitterness as you leave the middle, before the red berry sweetness reveals itself again at the back. A touch of oak, spice & heat on the finish.

Possibly needs a good vintage to be a decent version of itself and be worth even this small entry fee.

I've had better vintages of this wine.

Nose: not super expressive, floral, red fruits. Pretty and delicate.
Taste: Medium concentration, soft, elegant, black cherry, a pinch of salt and umami, backed by a subtle oaky finish. There's a soft carpet of tannins also once the fruit fades at the finish.

Not sure how I feel about this tonight, mainly due to being conflicted by my previous high score. My tasting notes now match fairly well from my notes 4 years ago, but this isn't wowing me tonight. Is there such a thing as a dumb phase for CdP...? Maybe it will be better tomorrow.

Day 2: I feel better about it but can't really say for certain much has changed. Definitely more grippy though.

Black raspberry, red raspberry, minerals and some leather on a very complex nose. Well integrated on the palate. This is in a fantastic place and has some life ahead of it. Slight bricking on the edge but fruit still coming through and wonderful secondary characteristics. The was a steal for $39. Ready now and easily at peak for another few years.

High/Low Blind Tasting III (Amy and Scott's house): Decanted about 1.5 hours. Full-bodied and attention-seeking, with flashy fruit and a hearty disposition. For CDP, this is balanced and drinking well, I hope it stays that way for a decade. Served blind alongside a simpler Rhone, all 11 tasters preferred this.

What I didn’t realize until this week is when I bought this 2013, Sofia & I tasted this with Roger in his cellar before it received the label after reviewing photos.

This was $25 on release and it is beautiful tonight as it was last weekend.

Ripe, juicy; blackberries, black raspberries, black plum, purple fruits, blueberries & some dark cherries. Grilled meats, light black pepper, dry galet stones, spice, dry top soil, dry tobacco, used leather, slightly moist volcanic mineral mixed w/ clay, sandalwood, dry & withering dark, red & purple florals, rainfall acidity, a well balanced, nicely structured, beautifully tensioned, balanced, elegant finish that last two-minutes and lands on minerality and florals.

High/Low Blind Tasting III (Eagan, MN): High Low Tasting: No secret this was my favorite wine of the tasting. Excellent showing and low that funk along with gravel, earth, spices, red berries, stone and tar. Just a unique profile and very nicely balanced. Could drink the whole bottle for sure.

Relative to the Beaucastel 2016 I tasted a few days ago, this is a lesser CDP. But it’s half the price so it definitely has value going for it. This is mostly grenache (80%), and very full bodied. Fruit and red licorice on the pretty nose. The palate is concentrated black fruit with elements of cocoa, loam and sanguine minerality. Medium finish. This will get better with further aging, but it’s very approachable right now.

PnP. Inky purple w/ dark red edge in color. Nose of blackberries, granite, garrigue and a hint of saddle leather. On the palate: intense blackberry, cassis, baking spice and glints of black licorice. Plush tannins are just barely perceived on gums. Long finish of blackberries, vanilla, granite and subtle wood spice. Lost points due to intensity (as others called out), but this is still killer wine and good QPR. I've had multiple C-d-P's that are twice this price and not as enjoyable.

Pnp'd from the cellar. Poured short to allow to warm up. Cherry cola aromatics. No guarigue either. Medium body and medium finish. Nice simple wine and at the price it's a nice entry-level example of CdP. I will drink up what I have left and move on.....

One of the wines of the vintage opens with cinnamon, flowers, apples, kirsch and spice in the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is creamy, soft, and filled with sweet, ripe, round, cherries, black raspberries, and strawberry nuances. Vibrant, elegant, and open, the creamy textures, and freshness is a perfect fit for all of its red fruit. The wine is produced from 95% old vine Grenache with 5% coming from various, assorted, allowable grape varieties. Drink from 2025-2035.

Garrigue, peppery spices, herbs, flowers, and black raspberries open the nose. The palate, with its core of sweet, cherries, and herbs is soft, round and lush, with ample sweet red fruits that come with a peppery, herbal edge on the mid-palate and in the finish. Second of 2 (first: 5/21, 92). When I drank the first, I noted that it was early in its drinking window, and this bottle justified that call. While that one was quite nice, it skewed a bit cloying, but that’s been subsumed by forest floor, incense, funk, black tea, bitter chocolate and fig, among other notes, making for a more interesting, complex and rustic and less sweet wine. Particularly nice with a grilled pork chop and veggies one night, Indian food the next. Mid+ window now, with probably a few more good years in top form (taking in my window by 2 years). While this bottling doesn’t rank, for me, with my fave base CdPs, Close des Papes, Pegau and Beaucastel, more or less in that order, it’s reliably VG and compelling qpr. 93+ if scoring

30 minute decant. Nose of black plum and fine cigar ash. Black fruit, dark earth, wet clay, light dried herbs, and a pronounced mineral note on the palate. Mineral note leads the finish, adding metallic notes, oily black olive, and lead over black plum fruit and oak.
