15.4% abv. Recent auction purchase.
Perfect cork condition, with the staining only at the very bottle of the cork.
Interesting take on Napa Cabernet. Still very young tasting - I blinded my wife on this and she thought it to be a recent vintage. Indeed, this does not show much aged character at all. Acidity is higher than usual for Napa Cab, but not screechy. Felt slightly out of place, actually, with this level of ripeness, but was integrated pretty well. Heat was not a problem, but body from the high alcohol was clearly on display. No overt oak that I could tell - much appreciated - just a pure fruit display. Not the most complex, but the flavor profile was Napa in a good way. Actually went very well with tortellini in a rich cream sauce with pancetta. Did not last long between my wife and myself.

I grabbed the last 6 bottles from UC liquadation sale and could not be more pleased with the purchase. This is consummate Oakville Napa Valley Cab Sauv , offering a glimpse of finely crafted and dedicated winemaking by the folks at Rudius. A perfectly executed project in combining all facets of dark fruit nuances , in particular black cherry and plum with a balanced array of kitchen savory spices, violet leaf . leather and quarry stone notes on the palette. Almost an endless study of black cherry evolution and impressive from start to finish. An example of a Napa wine in the $125 plus retail price range , more interested in genuinely showing its quality as a exemplary wine than pretense of being something even remotely great at a lofty price tag.

Enjoyed this but probably wouldn't look for another bottle - a bit jammy for my taste but despite that it has aged nicely and has a smooth finish.

I shared this with my wine group at a Mediterranean restaurant. We had this alongside a Cotes du Rhone Syrah. Personally I preferred this, maybe because it was more new world than the French wine. It reminded me of some of Turley's more restrained Zins from the the early 2000s. Lots of extraction, it was full bodied, dark colored, with a long finish. I'm guessing it had a fair amount of new oak as well.

Ripe cherry, cedar, and a musky note. The finish is medium with a rose petal smoothness. Very light tannins remaining.

Popped and poured and rank over the following few hours. This probably was out of its prime, but still an enjoyable wine, if not too exciting.

Lovely aromatics of lilacs and violets. Dark brooding in the glass. Dark fruit compote flavors. Tannins are grippy with good acidity. Mouth coating. Long finish. Lovely wine developing wonderfully. Terrific.

Still big and bold. Very well balanced and enjoyable with a winter stew. Lots of bright fruits on the front end. Some earthy notes and still plenty of structure here. Drink or hold.

The nose tells you that this wine is from California, but that just the beginning of a wonderful story. The dark fruit on the nose is rich and that richness extends to the palate in a lovely mouth-coating way. There is a hint of sweetness on the palate. The wine is balanced and has a great finish. I did not find the wine as nuanced as I might have hoped, but that may be due to the fact that I did not decant the bottle.
All in all, it was a lovely CA Cab that everyone enjoyed. It will be at its peak soon.

For my tastes, the tannins were largely resolved, expressive nose, smooth on the palate, with still enough structure to frame it. No real evolution in the direction of cigar box or typical Bordelais flavors, this tastes like aged, pleasant California cabernet.

Nice well balanced mountain cab. Hits all the right notes. Maybe the best Rudius I've had the pleasure of drinking.

Excellent wine and I have no recollection of buying any of the mixed case of Rudius I have. Definitely benefits from airtime, but his is in its wheelhouse. Come expecting a big Napa cab but circa 1980s style, and you will be rewarded.

Dark purple center with a light purple rim. The nose was packed with youthful, dark cherry and blackberry initially with cedar and vanilla as supporting notes. On the palate, with wine displayed intense dark fruit coupled with a subtle oak influence of vanilla and cedar. Although this was full-bodied, the acidity gave this wine vibrancy and character. Overall, this was a great effort from Jeff Ames, and I look forward to opening another at the 20 year mark.

Opened, not decanted. Bricking-purple in color. Dark fruit flavors of blue and black fruits are mature, but still drinking fresh after a bit of air. Nicely balanced, with a medium-long finish.

This needs a long decant. It is fairly oak monster-ish right off the bat. It lingers hours later. Not horrible, but a little off balance still.

With that being said, there are beautiful baking spice and fruit notes. Vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, blackberry, raspberry, blueberry and more.

I have one more bottle left that I will try and keep for a couple more years. Of course we all know how that goes. Cheers!

From a Napa-based producer with feet in both California and Oregon, this Walla Walla syrah is aging gracefully. Plummy fruit with notes of asphalt, black olive and bay leaf put a Northern Rhone stamp on new world intentions and tannins remain evident. Just barely into secondary development, this has the goods for further aging.

Definitely off, and maybe flawed. Slightly “bretty”, after 30 minutes in the decanter, but definitely “drinkable”. Aeration helped bring stabilization, along with the char-grilled NY Strip meal. Eventually, the beautiful red currant, red cherry, green tobacco, black raspberry, and rocky dirt started to emerge. Probably an outlier, I’ve got a couple of additional bottles, so we’ll see. Great experience with this winery in my past dealings.
