The ones I have are in great shape. Beautiful gold color. Delicious bouquet of honey and candied melon and apricots. Medium bodied with moderate sweetness. Fully mature but still fresh and lively. Delicious flavors of honey, candy melons, apricot, peach, pear, a little bit of spice, and a warm feeling added by the alcohol in a good way. 15% abv. Mevushal. Very true to the type of wine it is. If you can find a well stored bottle I highly recommend trying this unique opportunity. |

Having only gained AOC status for its red wines in 2004, Beaumes de Venise can provide excellent southern Rhone value for those seeking the rustic reds of neighbouring Vacqueyras, or something a little less rich and intense than Gigondas, or even the famous CDP (and much easier on the wallet). Though the savoury side of the wine really took centre stage overall, both red and dark fruits - currant, raspberry, blackberry, cherry - presented themselves on both the nose and palate. From there though, intense woodsy spice joined with pepper, thyme, licorice, and gravel to give the wine that rustic, earthy feel. Cigar smoke, charcoal, and salami came forward, with slight hints of oak through vanilla and cedar. The finish softened a bit, giving cinnamon and nutmeg notes along with spice cake, coffee, and dried fruit. The wine showed robust tannins/acidity, and though maybe not one for a long stay in the cellar, could probably come together a little more over a few years. Pretty tough to argue with the value on this one! |
