Nice perfumed nose of cassis, black cherries, vanilla and scorched earth. It has the structure to go on for at least another decade, so I would either drink now if you like your wines young or wait another three for the flavors and aromas that come with maturation. |

11/18/2008 - rothdog wrote: 75 pointsOverripe and sappy. Black licorice, plum and black cherry. Overall, the wine lacks balance, the flavor is unappealing and it is annoyingly sweet. Tastes like a poor Aussie impression of CdP. Similar notes from previous bottles. Poured 3/4 of it down the drain. |

7/22/2008 - rothdog wrote: 92 pointsThis rich, ripe, juicy red delivers notes of crushed berries, black cherries, vanilla and asian spice. Dark, inky ruby red/purple in the glass. Nice mouthfeel with moderate tannins, balanced acidity and a satisfying finish. This bottle exhibited none of the earthiness, which seemed to be off-putting to other reviewers. A bit of a fruit bomb, but it is a very nice wine. |

7/21/2008 - rothdog wrote: 86 pointsThis wine was disappointing upon release, and is now past its prime. Simple notes of mellon and honeysuckle. Soft and flabby on the palate. There is much room for improvement in Celia's Sauvignon Blancs. |

2003 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-PapeRed Rhone Blend more |
7/19/2008 - rothdog wrote: 87 pointsThis is a disappointing effort from a solid CdP producer. As you can tell from reading other notes, the '03 Guigal is fairly bretted out. Not much I can add here as far as tasting notes are concerned. Didn't get too much of the barnyard, but the new saddle leather dominates this wine, and overwhelms the fruit. Nice tannins, acidity and minerality. Savory herb finish. |

6/21/2008 - rothdog wrote: 89 pointsI actually love this wine, but for me it isn't a great representation of Barbaresco, so I can't rate it any higher. Big and ripe with notes of cherry flambe, tar and lavender. It is a perfectly enjoyable, delicious wine, but I prefer Barbaresco to be more focused and not as fruit driven. For me, it is too early to drink this one, but if you like big wines drink it now. If you are looking for finesse, forget about this one for at least 5 years. |

6/21/2008 - rothdog wrote: 86 pointsA strong Sauvignon Blanc, and a strong value. Straw colored in the glass with a pleasing nose of honeydew, grapefruit and flowers. It delivers wonderful notes of mellon, grapefruit, honeysuckle, pear, and lemon zest on the palate. Very balanced with nice acidity and minerality. Although price point is never a consideration for me when rating a wine, it is appropriate to note that I have had much lesser wines than this for much more money. A great summer wine, and sure to be a crowd pleaser. |

6/21/2008 - rothdog wrote: 84 pointsIf you like wines with horse sweat, barnyard and leather in the forefront (i.e. brettanomyces) this wine is for you. I was told this wine drinks just like a CdP, but from a lesser known appellation, and therefore, is much less expensive. I am happy to say that my Chateauneufs taste nothing like this wine. It isn't inexpensive due to its lack of pedigree - it's because they can't get a penny more for it. Too bad about the brett, because there actually is some decent fruit that just peeks through, and it also has beautiful structure. My advice is to spend twice as much, and get a bottle of something like Mas de Boislauzon, CdP. It is still relatively inexpensive, yet it is a serviceable, clean representation of its appellation. This wine is just too flawed to merit a higher rating. |

6/12/2008 - rothdog wrote: 86 pointsI had expected an improvement in this wine from the last time I tasted it, which was a little over six months ago. However, this time it was even less impressive. The nose has lost a bit of its liveliness, and the palate has lost some of its appeal as well. Unfortunately, the acidity has not become any more tolerable, so I can not rate this wine anything but lower than I did in November. It still has many of the same characteristics, but this wine is no more than just an "okay" Sauvignon Blanc. As much as I love Celia's Cabs, the Keever and the Corra SB's tell me that Sauvignon Blanc just isn't her thing. |

5/1/2008 - rothdog wrote: 89 pointsNot drinking as well as it did upon release. It will eventually come around again, but I don't think it will be ready for another 18 mos. Right now the oak is far too prominent. In a blind tasting I might even guess this wine to be from California. |

4/27/2008 - rothdog wrote: 90 pointsThe bottle from which I tasted a few months ago was terribly flawed with Brett, but this one was a beauty. Tight and rich, yet rustic in that on day one its formidable tannic profile left me searching for that soft spot in the armor. Dark purple to the rim. On day one it was a typical, tight, not-so-ready-to -drink Southern Rhone wine. Tar, charcoal and asphalt with hints of black fruits peeking out from above medieval walls of tannin. Improved with a few hours in the decanter. It was a different wine on day two. The charcoal and tar had softened to a scorched earth, and the wall of tannin had become a velvety curtain, which allowed blackberries, plums, black cherries, smoke, wet stone and provencal herbs to peek through. It needs at least three more years in the cellar, but if you can not wait you must give it about 4 hours in the decanter before serving. |

4/6/2008 - rothdog wrote: 89 pointsAn improvement over the bottle I had about 18 mos. ago. Leans toward red fruits, with black cherry, raspberry, licorice and soft tannins. Not exactly a vin de garde as it was a better wine upon release than it is now. |

4/2/2008 - rothdog wrote: 88 pointsNot a great showing for this wine. Right now it is a little awkward as it has shed some baby fat and is beginning to lean out. Red fruits are dominating, and the acid seems to be a bit high. I recommend sitting on this wine for another year before opening. It will come around. |

2/26/2008 - rothdog wrote: 89 pointsGorgeous nose of pears, almond, lemon zest and honeysuckle. Rich and viscous on the palate with nice acidity and minerality. Serve this wine at about 55 to 60 degrees. If served too cold it will be muted. It isn't quite the wine on the palate that it is on the nose, but it is still wonderful stuff. Pairing this with roast capon would make for a memorable meal. |

1/24/2008 - rothdog wrote: 92 pointsThis is one great Merlot. Unifined and unfiltered, it is purple/black to the rim. Black cherries, coffee, scorched earth and licorice. Tremendous structure with loads of finely grained tannin. This wine really needs a few hours in the decanter prior to consumption. |

1/12/2008 - rothdog wrote: 87 pointsSo much oak and alcohol that the fruit is overwhelmed. Chunky and lacking in elegance. Tastes like a booze drinker's wine. 3/4 of the bottle is still sitting in my refrigerator from two days ago, as we moved onto something a bit more satisfying before pouring more. Maybe it will be better tonight. |

1/8/2008 - rothdog wrote: 91 pointsWow! What a difference a year and a half has made for this wine. A little bit of cellar age has brought forth a depth and complexity I never suspected this wine could achieve. Still dark ruby/purple, it exhibits a nose of crushed berries, plums, currants, wet stone and shoe leather. The tannins are no longer green and astringent, and the palate delivers notes of black cherries, black currant, blackberries, pencil lead, cedar and leather. It is very smooth from front to back. It has a medium body, but the finish is still a bit short to merit a higher score. If the wine keeps improving as it has over the past 18 mos. this may change for the better as well. |
