2018 Pezzato Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

1/21/2021 - cjustl Likes this wine: 92 points

This is Pezzato's inaugural release, and so I was extremely excited to try it. I know it is not best practice, but literally opened it right off the delivery truck and decanted for a couple of hours. Nose reveals notes of dried fruit, ripe cherries, and crushed rock. Taste is characterized by dark fruits, earth tones such as rhubarb and forest floor, and a bit of chocolate. Tannins are supple and not harsh. It is a really good wine now that will only get better and more integrated with time.

2017 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndenhurst

St. Helena more

First off, I agree with most of the comments to date. How much you appreciate and like this wine is based on how you approach it. I’m a huge fan of Spottswoode’s estate bottling, and if you want this wine to approach that level of quality, you will be disappointed. With that said, if you have never had Spottswoode estate before, this gives you a general feel for the overall Spottswoode profile (just not as refined or sophisticated). And that in the end may be it’s greatest weakness, the nose and taste is almost too close to that of the estate wine, and so you are expecting the refinement. That being said, I think it is a good wine that I would purchase again as a cheaper option for the distinctive Spottswoode profile. It has a tremendous nose of dark cherry, a bit of menthol and spice, and minerality. As for taste, since it is young the alcohol is definitely present followed by pink peppercorn and darker fruits.

2017 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio

I’ve had multiple vintages of Clio, and overall I applaud the quality of the wine. However, the 2017 vintage is over oaked with an almost borderline bitter finish. A little disappointing... I think if you have the willingness to decant for entire day it will improve.

2016 Pulenta Estate Gran Cabernet Sauvignon IV

Mendoza more

11/19/2020 - cjustl Likes this wine: 89 points

This wine is fine, but it is certainly not a 94 point wine (the score at the time of this review). It is smooth, but not as bold or rich as I would expect from a Cabernet. Lacks a bit of complexity and does not have much detectible tannin or structure. But for the price, it is a good wine. What I’m trying to express is that we should save the mid to upper 90 score for truly exceptional wines.

2018 de Négoce Cabernet Sauvignon OG N.40

Diamond Mountain more

Popped and decanted quickly right off the truck. Obviously, these are less than ideal conditions for the wine to shine, but it is extremely pleasant and showing lots of promise. Nose of graphite, chalk, and floral notes. Can’t wait to see how it evolves in the months and years to come.

2015 Corley Family Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard

Yountville more

This is a bit of an oak monster. If that is your thing, you’ll love it. If not, I’d probably avoid. But overall, a good wine and well made, but for the same price there are better wines out there, in my opinion.

Stags Leap District more

Decanted for 5 hours and drank over 3. Beautiful wine. Nose is full of dark fruit with an earthly almost tar like undertone. Palate is similar but with more fruit and alcohol is definitely detected. You can certainly age this for awhile longer, but extremely enjoyable right now! I’m planning to pick up some more.

Received as a gift. Not my personal taste. Very terroir driven both on the nose and taste. It was better on day 2, so would recommend a day long decant at this point.

2018 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Dolinsek Ranch

Russian River Valley Red Blend more

4/18/2020 - cjustl Likes this wine: 92 points

Nose is robust and musty with deep fruit following. I agree it is a big wine with good grip. I also agree it will get better with age, but it thoroughly enjoyed it after 2 hour decant and got better as we worked through the bottle. Certainly a buy.

By no means a Chardonnay expert, but I think this wine is just ok. Definitely taste the oak, lemon, and some astringency at the end. My wife who loves Chardonnay agrees that it is bit lacking.

I agree with earlier comments that it is not as fruit forward as you’d expect, but it is extremely refined. Not quite an old world wine, but definitely has an earthy aspect. I enjoyed it throughly.

Smells of alcohol on the nose, translating into a lot of alcohol on the palate. Nice dark fruits and tannins, but overall pretty 1 note.

I wasn't expecting much from this wine, but my low expectations were still too high. My wife and I had to throw half the bottle away. Maybe with a little time it will become a little more drinkable, but I would not expect it to ever be much better than drinkable.

Decanted for an hour prior to consumption on Thanksgiving. Beautiful deep plum color in the core leading to light violet color on the edges. Predominately earth notes of pepper, leather and tobacco on the nose. Nice fruity flavor as it hits the tongue leading to the earthy flavors on the finish. Great wine for the value!

A balanced, light, and refreshing wine with a distinct citrus note of grapefruit. Other fruits of pear and apple are also detectable with a hint of earthiness. Pairs well with pears, apples, white fish, chicken, and mild to moderate cheeses. Overall, it is a great wine for the price!!!
