1961 Château MagdelaineSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
5/11/2023 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 95 points375 ml. My wife bought this and other 61s for my 50th birthday 12 years ago; drank 5/11/23 for my 62nd birthday with my wife. Just after my in-laws went to be with the Lord. No guarantee of tomorrow, so might as well pop this bottle; with steak, not a lot of sediment for age, garnet edges, but still rather fresh, clearly aged, but still has life in it; crazy for 62-year-old half bottle, I bet the full bottles and magnums will be good for a century; everything is melded together and I have a hard time picking out flavors, but I know that it is balanced and I wish that I had a lot more of this to drink. |

10/23/2022 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 91 pointsDrank last of four purchased for $12.99 in 1990 in Oct 2022; 36 years old; tough to get moldy cork out but got it out clean, decanted clear, deep garnet with slight edge of amber; old winey leather nose but clean and fresh in spite of scary looking cork; fresh and clean in mouth with fruit mostly gone yielding spice box and leather; acidic slight tart finish that should be nice with steak; after a while tobacco, cherry and a touch of vanilla presented and lingered on a medium to long finish. Very enjoyable. |

10/31/2021 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 91 pointsLast of 12 bottles on Oct 2021, 21 years old, decanted like a port, lots of crust in bottle, but clear, borderline between cooked and clean fruit, definitely heavily aged, still red and not brown, see if it deteriorates or improves with a little air, probably should drink quickly, my guess is it will fade quickly. It actually held up very well, for a few hours. Generous, plush Zin flavors, with a moderate amount of plummy age, but nothing negative. I recall really liking the other 11, but it has been at least a decade that I have held this last bottle. Surprising that it was still enjoyable. Especially after seeing the flakiness in the bottle after the decanting. |

2/2/2021 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 91 pointsLast bottle of 14 on Feb 2021 after a long gap holding onto the sole survivor of a really enjoyable wine; this was a crowd pleaser when younger, but still complex enough for me; now 16 yrs old for last bottle has dark fruit and berries over mentholy brush and moderate tannins, smooth slightly acidic finish and stood up to steak, really nice wine for the price. |

7/28/2020 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 91 pointsI had 13 bottles, initially rated it 94; 2 left as of July 2020; Very nice and low, low price for a Priorato; had 2005 at Picasso restaurant in Vegas Jan 09, was good but not as good as this 04; 9th July 2010 was outstanding with fruit, mint and spice on nose, mouth and long finish; 4th to last Nov '18, good aged fruits, very nice; 3rd to last July 2020, more mature, very balanced, perhaps a step simpler at 91 |

3/15/2020 - JCWmedia wrote: 92 pointsDrank my last bottle; no one else has made on note on this wine since my 2nd to last bottle 6 years ago; it is now Mar 2020, wine has somewhat Rhoney stink, giving way to warm sweet brushy graham crackery nose; flavors fresh and balanced; this is a Bordeaux blend but if I didn't know I would say a Rhone blend, very nice, long finish gets a little dry and tart after 15 secs, great without food, but probably better with food, definately evolved from original reason that I bought six, but evolved into something very nice. 92 |

3/15/2020 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 92 pointsBought 2 bottles. Drank 1st June 24, 2008, decanted and left good amount of crust in bottle, bright fresh berry and euc mint nose, very full and complex flavors, and this just 1 minute after opening, this is going to be good! Last Mar 2020, lots of crust and sediment but decanted clear, really nice cab flavors, still fresh, clean nose; eucalyptus has given way to forest freshness, flavors now very melded, tannins light but present, only a wisp of plum to show age, very, very impressive for a 24 yr old wine with an initial cost of $17 |

2/2/2020 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 93 pointsOpened 2/1/20; for about 30 minutes after decanting had a chalky nose, odd, but blew off, then deep black berry nose and flavors with inky tarry finish, not crazy sweet for a port, very nice |

8/7/2019 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 93 pointsI bought 7 bottles of this and am just drinking the last Aug 2019. Still wonderful. Wish I had another 7 for the next decade to see what happens. Notes: Tasting in store, intense cherries in a gentle spice box sold me; 2nd to last Jan 2018, as I remember, intense black cherry with broader balanced flavors, really a special wine, glad it still has this character 11 years on that drove me to buy it, one bottle left. Opened last Aug 7, 2019. Still strong black cherry, and underlying earthy cedar box and garrigue. I rate this 93+. This wine stands out in my wine memory. I compare other black cherry and spicy wines that I like to it mentally all the time. |

12/11/2018 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 93 pointsMy last bottle Dec 2018, decanted clear, huge fruit wafted up during decanting, in glass graham cracker dusty nose over dark tarry fruit, clean cherry tobacco flavors, and smooth finish. Consistent, if not better, than previous bottles. Rated in other review here. |

5/28/2018 - JCWmedia Does not like this wine: 80 pointsLast bottle in May 2018, 375ml format, smells a little older than it is upon opening, pleasant porty alchohol nose, a little tart in mouth, will have with steak. Even with steak boring and sour. Try next day per advice in Cellar Tracker. No better, old, porty alcohol, little complexity, and sour off-balance finish. I had a couple of other bottles that I drank years ago... I don't recall liking it then either. |

4/17/2018 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 94 pointsDrank 1st bottle Aug-2003 ruby red, full fruit with tinge of spice/earth but mostly cherry-plum, balanced with age for plummy finish; 2nd glass of 2nd bottle by coravin 4/17/18 started with big stank that blew off after 10 minutes, was worried for a bit, mentholy earth with great balance and acidity came through, lots of fruit left, lots of body, could last a while longer, alongside 1988, which was also good, this was perhaps 94. |

4/17/2018 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 92 pointsFirst bottle in 1998 wonderful full fruit, like supple fruity boutique Barolo; 2nd bottle coravin'd glass on 4/17/18, opened very quickly with lots of fruit and earth, good body, tannins and acid, balanced, alongside 87, liked both, 87 perhaps a notch better, this was perhaps 92 |

2/28/2018 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 90 pointsHad two bottles. 1st May 2015, gripping tannins, ink stain on the teeth, fruit and a little menthol on the nose; last Feb 2018, fresh huge fruit with brambly brushy nose, medium tannins, really nice and plush, good balance, and teeth-coating thick finish, still get the menthol on nose along with cherry. |

2/22/2018 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 90 pointsBought at winery in May 2002; drank 1st one right away and very enjoyable, no notes; 2nd Mar 2005 medium nose, spicy and slightly tart on first taste, we'll see how it breaths, nose opened, fruit and spice came through, great 2nd day; 3rd 10/10/07, started with chocolately nose on fruit with medium tannins; last Feb 2018, good right away, still very vibrant fruit, meaty spice and tobacco, and good balanced acid, very good at 19 yrs old; rated 90, but after 90 minutes of air this is getting better, say 91. If anyone has a well stored bottle of this still hanging around it is very nice both for sipping and also for standing up to food. |

1/14/2018 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 89 pointsI had 6 bottles of this. This is my last. Rather sparse tasting notes early, but more later, copied here. "Very nice and deep flavors (2/02); drank 4th 6/02; drank 5th 2/07, lots of sediment thrown, had to decant, smells a little like a dachshund after a bath, earthy fruit, nicely aged, good earthy flavors but clear and bright; last Jan 2018, decanted clear, but big chunks and dust thrown, brownish edges, I can still detect why I smelled dachshund, now more of a touch of formaldehyde-preserved dogfish shark (or pick your own science class dissection odor), strangely giving way to flowers, tart cherry flavors, rather good balance, good acid, tannins very soft but still there, not as good as when young, but I like it and will enjoy drinking this. 89+ now. After 1 hr the dachshund and the dogfish shark were gone. Just good things left. Perhaps better than 89." |

10/26/2017 - JCWmedia Does not like this wine: NRDrank when 26 years old. My last of four. I liked the other three but likely drank them long, long ago. This one had good dark red color still, really appealing nose that made me think it would be really nice, initially in mouth still OK, but after about 3 or 4 seconds really dry, harsh and a little sour. I wonder if the cork failed on this. Not really musty, just dry like my mouth is full of sawdust. Not rated because this certainly wasn't what the other younger ones tasted like. |

1/27/2017 - JCWmedia Likes this wine: 93 pointsI had in tasting of 12 PN in '06 and it was my 2nd favorite after Chasseur. Gave it a 93. My notes were "Floral nose, Yummy and soft supple flavors with long finish." Bought 2. Just had last in '17. Notes: decanted clear, big and clean flavors, aged cherry with melded earth, herbs and spices with no one scent or flavor standing out, very balanced finish with bright fruit, but not really fruit, more Carneros earth if that can be bright. No reason to downgrade my 93 from '06 tasting, just different, not better or worse, glad I am drinking now, likely will change more with time, wish I had another to try in 5 years though. The tasting notes of other member saying that it diminishes after a few hours are not surprising. Nuanced but really good to me. I will make sure to drink this up within a couple of hours. |
