2014 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La BoudriotteChardonnay more |
12/24/2022 - InTheMunee Does not like this wine: 88 pointsI love Ramonet, but I did not like this. There was an overt oak presence that never really resolved itself, even after 17 hours. Rich and oaky and lacking cut and freshness. It was coming across as one of those overoaked, overly rich California Chardonnays that I have been trying to avoid by gravitating to white Burgundy. This was deeply disappointing to me. |

11/3/2021 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 97 pointsI thought this was great. This was served at cellar temperature at a restaurant and then we fully decanted and kept at room temp for 90 mins. At first, it was tight and a little unyielding, but not “shut down.” But after less than an hour, it was much more expressive with aromas of pear, citrus oil, and a element of brioche/bread, and quite a bit of vanilla coming through later, as well. And with food, I really liked this. It has a tactile/phenolic texture on the palate that I suspect will resolve with maturation in the bottle. Not as young and bracing as I expected. With the right treatment, open and approachable. |

9/17/2021 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 97 pointsStunning wine. Immediately aromatic with blackberry and blueberry. A touch of cedar and anise with maybe a slight hint of cinnamon or perhaps clove. A rich and concentrated wine that is still very fruit forward and not a lot of tertiary characteristics peeking through. But wonderfully balanced despite the intensity. Great stuff. |

7/29/2021 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 96 pointsAmazing! I guess for every premox bottle out there, there is one like this... beautiful perfect color; no TCA; no premox; performed wonderfully and was pure and crystalline; very nice; perhaps I even wished for a bit more "premox" to make the nose even more evolved and expressive! Great stuff and this bottle would have easily lived for another 10-15 years. |

2/27/2021 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 98 pointsJust a quick note to help others. This is a great wine. Will be even better in years, but can be approached now. I noted that the aromatics really started to hit stride after 3.5 hours sitting in a decanter. Please plan on that if you will open one soon. |

10/2/2020 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 95 pointsExcellent! I decanted this for 1.5 hours ahead of time and consumed over the next two hours after that. This is in a fantastic spot and was so beautifully seamless and balanced. This will definite hold for many years, but not sure it will get better. If you have one, enjoy now! Great stuff. |

3/28/2020 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: NRI decanted this for two hours before trying it and consumed over the next two hours; nice nose of black currant, violet, black raspberry, black pepper and baking spices; young and "grapey" on the palate at this young stage of its life, but well balanced and not as tannic as I expected; very good and enjoyable; Greer wines continue to impress me. |

11/11/2018 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis wine had a "wow" nose at first pouring, expressing almost a Bordeaux-like expression of maturing red wine with lead pencil shavings; dark fruits, blackberry, plum; still some tannins present; in a spot between primary and secondary development; very nicely balanced and expressing elegance, but still concentrated and powerful at the same time; kind of hard to believe it's Syrah; seemed to get more fruit-focused as the wine developed with aeration, like it gained more primary elements and lost some of the maturing, secondary characteristics |

11/11/2018 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 97 pointsLovely nose of melted butter, vanilla cream, candied lemon, apricot and peaches; buttered popcorn; pie crust; creamy texture on the palate with an explosive finish and is endless and reverberates; nice acidity helps frame the otherwise rich and enveloping fruit; rounded on the palate, but has a tension; impeccably balanced; in a great spot right now. |

9/28/2018 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 92 pointsWhat a fantastic performance from a 50-year old California Cab! The fill was into the neck, and the wine was in great shape. Perhaps there was an early moment of concern that it might be corked, but that quickly below off to reveal nice smokey black fruits and good earth associated with mature wine. Very clean nose, and no real funk to it. The wine held up well in the glass and didn't fall apart. This performed very well. |

9/28/2018 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 97 pointsI have had mixed experiences with Marcassin Pinot Noir in the past, but this particular bottle and vintage was fantastic. Explosive red fruits on the nose with a lovely, expressive bouquet with complexities of tea, minerals and flowers. Excellent grace on the palate with luscious fruit. It was a real crowd pleaser. Great example of the heights that California Pinot Noir can reach. This has tons of life left, and it's not in danger of losing any steam, but it is in a great place right now. |

9/28/2018 - InTheMunee wrote: flawedThis was deeply disappointing. The somm decanted it for an hour, but the nose was still very reluctant to come forward. Some aromas of charcoal and a bit of oak, but not much else. There were bitter tannins on the end that clipped the finish. Difficult to find much fruit on the palate. It wasn't corked, but I have to think that this isn't a correct bottle, as it should have been fantastic (albeit young). I wanted to report my experience and contribute to the tasting notes, nevertheless. |

2005 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon "Deep Time"Napa Valley more |
7/1/2018 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 96 pointsDecanted two hours before tasting. A little maturity is showing in the color of the wine at the rim, but otherwise the appearance is intense and deep. Sweet black currants on the nose with highlights of chocolate, vanilla and cedar. There is an intriguing complexity of unsmoked cigar tobacco and spice coming through with aeration. Exhibiting more of a red fruit profile on the palate and has good acidity and a long finish. Excellent ripe California Cab. I don't think it improves much from here, but it is not at risk of fading. |

5/24/2018 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 93 pointsBeautiful red color that has begun to clarify with maturity. Expressing bright red fruits complicated by a unbrewed dried tea leaves and spices. Balanced acidity and very aromatic bouquet helped make this a great wine. Nothing out of place. I am not sure if I see it being incredibly long-lived, but at the moment it is drinking well with a nice balance between fruit and the complexities of age. Whatever muscularity and dark density that was found in young versions of this wine have morphed into elegance and brightness. |

5/19/2018 - InTheMunee wrote: 89 pointsThis has a gorgeous bright red color, but was marred by a very smokey and charred element that was both surprising and unpleasant to me. Perhaps it moderated with air a bit, but was always present. Otherwise, there was red and strawberry fruit on the nose. We drank it all, so obviously not bad, but not really balanced on the nose for me. |

2/10/2018 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 94 pointsA really nice wine, but I wanted to add a note here that (similar to comments from others below) I found this pretty tight and not very expressive out of the gate. Towards the end, there were glimpses of aromatic brilliance and complexity, but you need to give this a 4+ hour decant at this point in time. I wish I had done so myself. |

12/28/2017 - InTheMunee wrote: 89 pointsBirthday dinner at Bern's. Believe me - I wanted to love this. The somm said that people either love it or only just like it. Count me in the latter group. This was a rare treat to have something from the world’s hallowed ground of Pinot Noir. Expressing more dark fruit flavors, it took a while for it to expand in the glass. The nose was dominated by an expression of roasted marshmallow that I have also found in examples of Marcassin. This wine was better in the morning than it was the night before, in my opinion, after it had shed its roasted marshmallow element and turned from darker fruits to a more integrated red-fruit bouquet. But, overall, this wasn't what I wanted from a red Burgundy Grand Cru. |

12/28/2017 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 90 pointsBirthday dinner at Bern's. Decent fill, color and cork. Bern’s discovered three cases of this in their warehouse recently (their giant wine warehouse is the “gift that keeps on giving,” said the somm). This was incredibly alive and expressive. Given that is was only a Fourth Growth, you might not expect 60+ years of longevity, but it was a good vintage and good storage will do a lot for a wine! Dried cherry and dried currants on the nose with leather and lead pencil shavings. There was a very light touch of “green” on the nose (almost like a shade of what whole cluster fermentation might contribute to a Pinot Noir) that was pleasant and added complexity. Good purity with nothing funky on the nose and balanced acidity with red fruit flavors. The wine was still holding up the next morning, too, which really surprised me. While it wasn't an awe-inspiring wine, it gets extra points for its age and punching above its weight class. |

12/28/2017 - InTheMunee wrote: flawedBirthday dinner at Bern's. Low shoulder fill, but the color of the wine was half-decent with a browning red hue. Exhibited a nice dried-cherry aroma, and was definitely drinkable. The bottle showed better than Margaux's own tasting note on their website. But this bottle was more admirable for its history, age and pedigree than for being an amazing wine. In less than an hour, the wine was dead with no aroma and little taste/finish. At least I took home a cool, rare trophy bottle. And, as always, the somm at Bern's was great about handling the situation about the underperforming wine itself. |

12/28/2017 - InTheMunee wrote: flawedBirthday dinner at Bern's. Sadly, this was dead on arrival. Very low fill (low shoulder) and brown color. There was an aroma that this was once wine, and the bouquet was not off-putting, but was expressed vinegar and it was bitter on the palate. We gave it 10 minutes in the glass to see if anything magical would blossom, but it didn’t. Undrinkable. Cool bottle to collect as a trophy, but wine was no good. As always, the somm at Bern's was great about handling the situation. |

2013 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les PerrièresChardonnay more |
8/15/2017 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis was great. The wine was surprisingly dark in color (deep gold, especially when viewed in concentration in the decanter), which immediately concerned me given its young age (2013). However, there was nothing wrong with the wine and there were no premox issues. The wine exhibited great complex aromas of lemon, peach and honeysuckle with secondary oak characteristics of vanilla and cream. There is minerality and acidity, but everything is harmonious with no harsh unrefined edges to it. Rounded on the palate. It's a very nice wine, and we decanted it and enjoyed it over a couple of hours. It keeps bringing you back in to smell it over and over again. Is it worth the money? The answer probably depends on how much money you have to begin with. You could probably spend this sum and find a more penultimate wine experience with another bottle, but this was a great treat and unique experience. |

2/25/2017 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 97 pointsIncredibly nice wine. The bouquet was very fragrant right from the first pour. Gorgeous Cali Cab aromas with blackberry compote, plum, licorice, flowers, and a touch of tar. The wine is very rich, but balanced and not hot at all. Drinking this wine reminded me how much I love Hundred Acre - it's a shame it got so expensive at to price me out of the market! But, damn it's good. I don't see this wine benefiting from cellaring (i.e. evolving much more), but it has a long life ahead of itself. |

12/17/2016 - InTheMunee Does not like this wine: 88 pointsI wanted to love this, but I did not. Green/stemy aromas dominated the bouquet, and they did not dissipate with air and time. Makes me think this was made with 100% whole clusters. I am sensitive to stems, so that did not help, but after 12 years, you'd want a more complex and integrated nose on this wine. There were compelling red fruit flavors on the palate, and the wine was balanced, but I want an intoxicating perfume on a Burgundy of this caliber. I was left disappointed. With food, the wine performed better on the nose (which I know sounds a bit odd - but it did seem to smell better and was less stemy with food), and I was thinking that the wine had turned a corner, and I got excited, but the stemy notes returned and persisted after the food courses. |

10/14/2016 - InTheMunee Likes this wine: 94 pointsI am going to temper the enthusiasm of some of the other tasters here and say this was not a life-changing wine for me. It was, however, an excellent wine with good raspberry and black cherry aromas and flavors. I would recommend a solid 2-hour decant at this stage. Given the high alcohol content (15%+), this wine surprisingly exhibited a very refined palate that was well balanced and elegant while still expressing juicy fruit, which appears to be a hallmark of Manfred's Grenache style (which I applaud and love). There is still some tannin in the wine's profile, so I suspect it will get further refined, elegant and ethereal with age, but it's certainly drinking well now. |
