2010 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Red Rhone Blend more

9/1/2012 - Dr. Rislin wrote: 91 points

Opened 4 hours before decanting for a half hour. Drank with home-made burgers. Had the usual aromas of a young generic CdP from Clos saint Jean; cherries, blueberries, a touch of licorice, spice. On the palate very heavy and liquor-like. Unfortunately the lasting impression was excessive alcohol, giving the same mouth-feel as a Port-wine, however without the concentration of one. To be fair I suspect the wine is closing down now. Will not touch for 3 years+. I have heard 2010 described as being alike 2005 several times. Not so in this case...

Had to try again after more than a year since touching last. Drank a lot of bottles when new, it was hard to withstand.... Opened, decanted, poured. Very strong aromas of blueberries, kirsch, tobacco, leather. Some vanilla too. In the mouth very meaty, dark, complex. after an hour or so aromas of violets, cola, wet slate, spice box, dark berries. The closest thing in taste being 1990 Amarone from Bertani, with it's Port-like heavyness but without the thick, sugary, mouthcoating sensation that Port has. This is great stuff!! Have four bottles left, and they are for keeping. Maybe in three to four years with some Bertani afterwards?

Opened, decanted for 10 minutes, poured. Fantastic aromas of blackberries, essence of cassis, violets and lavender. Developed into licorice and english licorice in the glass. Drank before and with filet of beef with sauce bearnaise and sauteed fresh vegetables. The estragon in the suace proved a perfect match with this wine. On the palate this is a monumental effort. I drank the first case after launch because i couldn´t resist, but fortunately i bought two cases. It has lavender, violets, dark berries, and high levels of glycerin with totally integrated tannins. THIS IS HOW CLASSIC GRENACHE-SYRAH-MOURVEDRE SHOULD TASTE LIKE!! The finish lasts 30+ secinds. Try this wine, please dont miss it!

Tasted in a restaurant. Great fruity aroma, cherries, raspberries, strawberries, a hint of cola. on the palate really structured with red berries, defined tannins, white pepper. A really good Californian pinot to be recommended, and clearly ready to drink. Hopefully i will find some bottles somewhere...

Opened. Dark, opaque color, not a typical Telegraphe. Too cold to start out but fantastic nose with kirsch essence, blueberries, white pepper. Decanted 1 hour. drank with steak bearnaise. Very heavy and still somewhat closed. smell of blood rare steak, wood-smoke. Taste of red berries, licorice, crushed earth, provencal herbes. good tannins, very long aftertaste. This will prove fantastic for the patient. Can be drunk from now with heavy foods and decanting, though. Lat minute last glass edit: After 5-6 hour decant: Heaven. multi-dimensional, full, long. Almost Chambolle-like softness to it. Best Telegraphe i have ever had, even though it's so young. Very close to an extraordinary score. It will be hard keeping my hands off the rest of the case!

Tasted on wine-evening with good friends. Exceptional nose of sweet cherries, white pepper. Has that rubber-band nose of older wines. In the glass pure essence of pinot. Silky, spice box, cinnamon, cherries, raspberries. A touch of leather, too. Just enough tannin to keep it al in line. This is good stuff!!

Beautiful colour with hint of lime-green. Aromas of lime, melon, butterscotch. Also a faint hint of eucalyptus. Long and powerful taste of citrus, melon, some iron present. very long on the palate, a powerful and structured wine that can handle heavier dishes. Deserves to be decanted. This is great stuff.

Decanted for one hour. Smells great. Buttermilk, blue berries, licorice, tar, cedar. Oaky, too. In the mouth a fruit-tannin-glycerin bomb. So much of everything it's too much. I will wait at least two years before i try one more, and i think it will merrit a 95+ score once the pronounced oak integrates more. By then it will still be one for the winter nights, maybe with some osso buco italian style.

2001 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve

1/24/2010 - Dr. Rislin wrote: 94 points

Opened, poured. Too cold due to cellar temperature. Didn't need decanting. When it warmed up in the glass it had brett, raspberries, tea-tree oil and faint licorice. In the mouth only persons familiar with the Rayas portfolio would have guessed CdP, had this been tasted blind. This wine tasted like garnd cru burgundy, so feminine and well integrated with delicate red berries and sweet tannins brought together by the brett. I'm not normally too keen on brett, but here it was an enhancing part of the picture. Thankfully there's more where this bottle came from, to be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years.

Been in the cellar for close to 3 years, never tasted. Opened and decanted. Immediately aromas of violets, crushed earth, licorice, dark berries. In the mouth tannins like a Ribera del Duero 2004, and concentrated fig-like fruit, not unlike a Colheita. Still the aromatic notes are there in taste. This will be heaven for the patient. Thankfully this was drank with HEAVY food. i will wait 3-5 more years for those tannins to melt.

Dark berries, coconut on the nose. Very dark. Drank after ½ hour decant. Spectacular. Very smooth and coherent. Chocolatey essense of dark berries. Still has a tannin bite, and is not as silky and benign as the 2000. I think it's going down that direction, though. Many more bottles in the cellar, thankfully.

Opened. Dark berries, buttermilk. Almost jammy. Decanted. Drank over several hours, at first accompanying roast chicken with herbes des provence. Quickly it developed licorice, garrique, tar-like flavours. A spectacular wine, although the 2005 was more crisp and linear. It almost tastes like prime australian syrah from a cool year... I respect Parker, but as to what i've tasted so far, i find 2005 superior to 2007 and i think most of the 2005's will also age better, but that's just me.

Decanted 2 hours before drinking, was drunk following Pignan 2004 and 2005 with friends. Best wine i have had for Years. Better than Reine des Bois 2001, Combes des Fous and Deus ex Machina 2005 and Hommage á Jaques Perrin 1998. Much more profound than Rayas 2001, also a stunning wine. Smell and taste like Pignan 2005, just more of everything. Has a slight touch of Brett unlike Pignan, but it just augments this wine. I made one major mistake with Rayas and Pignan 2004; not buying at least a case of each. I WILL NOT MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN IN GOOD YEARS!!!! This wine is worth its hefty pricetag!!!

Gift bottle. Typical Sangiovese smell, slightly closed with hints of cherries, dark berries, leather element and pepper. More of the same on the palate, has some nice sweetish tannins. Also has a hint of a green element, either from part of the blend being unripe or from too many stalks? As an everyday wine decent. Won't benefit from ageing.

Opened 5 hours before drinking, decanted on opening. Heavy aroma of tea-tree oil, red cherrys, truffles, burnt figs. Very tannic but incredibly integrated with flavors of tea-tree oil, red fruit, tobacco, licorice. Heavy alcohol, 14% is a major lie. This wine is spectacular, even better than 2001 and 2004. Cannot wait to taste big brother, but will wait. BUY THIS IF YOU CAN!!!! Regretted badly not buying a full case of 2001 and 2004. This is more silky and elegant than grand cru Bourgogne, but more reliable and cheaper.
