2019 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Evangelho Vineyard

Contra Costa County Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

Huge Bedrock fan (top 3 in my cellar) and love the aging potential. All are great at any age, but very few are peaking early. There are many comments that this is an early peaker. I disagree and say that it’s delicious but will get so much better with time.

Nose of black raspberry, blueberry, anise seed, and a hint of merthiolate tincture. Fuzzy black raspberry fruit with laurel, thistle, orange peel, and dried thyme with some other tart purple fruit. Layers of dried herbs on the finish with dusty tannins and sun-baked earth, pushing forward with acidity on the balanced, lingering finish.

Dark intense garnet to the rim. Savory brambly and spice box. Pine and herbal elements as well. Impressive structure and purity of fruit although super young. Could go for a number of years.

Evangelho is, admittedly, not my favorite Bedrock offering but the 17 is drinking well with a little bit of air. Orange rind, citrus, and red fruits dominate with a bit of an herbal element on the finish. A bit light on the mid-palate, but still tasty. Probably some upside in the next year or two but drinking very well!

PNP, consumed over 3 days.

This bottle is just getting started. I'm going to hold back my other two for the long haul. Mataro dominated blend (I think) which is why I love this wine. Excellent with a rack of lamb.

Drink or hold

94+

Light violet with some transparency.
Nose dark fruited with some garrigue.
Palate initially a bit short, as it sits and warms, more of a ripe strawberry note with some silky texture. A favorite for me within the Bedrock lineup, lighter bodied and graceful.

Belle robe rubis pâle. Un nez de garrigue, d'herbes, de thym, bouquet garni et de fruits. Une bouche sur les cerises, herbes, fruits, zaatar. C'est long et savoureux.

Seemed a bit reserved and ungiving, with tight structure. This was a pop and pour, so some air would probably helped.

1 hr decant and served in Zalto bordeaux glasses.
This is definitely the tastiest and probably the greatest Mourvèdre I have had in my life. Much lighter colored, lighter bodied and less tannic than a typical old world Mourvèdre. Tons of bing cherry, thyme, a light touch of vanilla and cinnamon sugar. Beautiful floral (lavender? Hyacinth?) touch on the nose as well. A completely different Mourvèdre than old world examples — and that’s the only reason for hesitating on the GoAT award, since they’re such different beasts — but oh my lord how delicious! Can it age? I’ll never know; I am not keeping these in the cellar. Wow.
Score : 95-96. Relative to expectations: +++

Mistakenly thought this was a bottle of the 2020 vintage. From the nose, I immediately knew I pulled the wrong bottle. While this was good on Day 1, it was drinking more like a young Bedrock wine than Carignan. It developed the varietal characteristics overnight. TNs from Day 2.

Nose of raspberries, dried blueberries, light sweet baking spices, a bit of green herbs, and a dash of black pepper. The high acidity provides a ton of structure. Palate of cranberry, wild raspberry, a touch of blue fruits. Sharp tannins bring in a bit of tea and leather notes. Long tannic finish with tart cranberries and raspberries, minerals, and a bit of green herbs.

These bottles have a nice future ahead of them.

Prime drinking window right now. I've learned to wait at least seven years before uncorking Bedrock Evangelho Vineyard wine: open too early and the wine can be astringent. If you wait, the wine blossoms into Zinfandel deliciousness. Outstanding wine. Purple. Dense. Multiple taste sensations. Smooth. An experience.

Did not see the note about decanting for three hours in time, but will have half tonight, evacuate and half tomorrow night. Decanted, modest sediment, Rich dark purple red color with hint of pink on edges, initial nose is grapy, tight and puckery initially with hints of flavor to come.
After 45 minutes, has a finish now but still tight and less sharp/acid, could definitely do with more air.

Wow....really expressive and full of spice, fruit and so much character that I went back to check the label. Probably the best Carignan I've had from the USA, easily! At 14.5% alcohol this is drinking very easily with dinner, which I was initially a little worried about. Will definitely purchase again.

Quick decant. Quite a complex nose, with dark fruit, smoked meats, black fig, dusty earth, and India ink. More smoked meat on the palate with crunchy blue fruits, black tea, acidity, minerals, and Prosciutto. Smooth tannins on the finish with blueberry, bresola, and touch of salt water an old oak. Wow - what a wine!
