ABV: 13.5%. I've been a fan of Claiborne and Churchill wines for over a decade and I think they're the best domestic producer for Alsatian varietals. Year after year, they crank out quality wines at reasonable prices, but this 2022 Gewurztraminer is clearly taking things to another level. Upon opening, explosive notes of ripe lychee fruit, fresh rose petals, and white pepper jump out of the glass. The bouquet of this wine is so enticing that it should be made into an air freshner scent! The midpalate has that textbook waxy mouthfeel with ample acidity to lift the fruit and the lingering finish leaves your palate salivating for another sip. This is still a very young wine with a lot of potential and could definitely use a few more years in the cellar for the acid to integrate further with the wine. If you're planning to open your bottle soon, be sure to decant it prior to serving. This Gewurztraminer is absolutely delicious and every Thai restaurant in the country should have it on their wine list!

This Rose stands out in a crowded field. Full flavored, tart, lively, just a lot of "there" there. Drunk a week ago and I can't give detailed flavor descriptors, but it's a charmer. You can tell it's Pinot Noir, but it doesn't hit you over the head with it. One of the best Rose's we've had in California.

Had at the winery and I like it as much as I'd liked the 2020. They really do a nice job on this making a nice summer rosé that is also a gastronomic rosé. There's a touch of RS in there that helps make it a great candidate with salty or slightly spicy dishes or snacks. Bright fruit and more depth than is immediately obvious.

2021 Claiborne and Churchill Syrah Edna Valley

ABV: 14.2%. I usually don't open my wines at such a young age, but I was extremely curious about this one since it's from a vintage that I may stock up on. The nose is very impressive with textbook notes of a cool-climate Syrah: Blue and black fruits with some white pepper, reminicent of the Aussie Shirazes from McLaren Vale. The tannins in the mouthfeel are much softer than I expected (but there's still some grip) and there's good acidity lifting the abundant fruits. Nice and lengthy finish wraps up this beautiful wine. Very impressive for such a young wine.

5/31/2023 - Raised the score by one point (from 93 to 94). The nose evolved overnight to exhibit more fruit tones, sliding slightly away from the blue fruits into more black and dark red fruits. The fruits are also more expressive on the mid-palate. This wine has good potential and I think it'll drink well around the 10-year mark (2031).

Excellent version of Cali Pinot. Cold weather results in lots of secondary baking spice notes to complement the fruit and it’s got great mouthfeel. Great vintage and producer.

2018 Claiborne and Churchill Pinot Noir Greengate Ranch & Vineyard

Edna Valley more

8/27/2022 - Snoot Doggie Dogg Likes this wine: 91 points

This winery was established in 1983 by two University of Michigan professors (Claiborne Thompson and Fredericka Churchill) who gave up teaching for winemaking. At first the winery focused on Alsatian-style whites, and true to their roots, they are well-known for making a mean Gewurztraminer. They later expanded their efforts into making great Pinot Noir as well.

This particular offering is a blend of two clones (2A and Pommard) from Greengate Ranch & Vineyard, which is across the street from the Claiborne & Churchill winery itself. It is very small production, as only six barrels were produced.

Pale ruby in color, this wine is quite aromatic with strawberry jam on nose along with smokiness, some potpourri, forest floor, mushroom and a hint of vanilla. Upon sipping, one meets a light-bodied wine with soft tannins and high acidity. The texture is quite supple, and the fine tannins well-integrated into the wine. The attack is soft with some subdued cherry notes, which are joined soon after on the midpalate by a crescendo of bright red cherry, red plum, raspberry and cranberry. Lots of fruit! There are some elements of earth, cocoa and vanilla in the background, but the fruit characteristics are utterly dominant. The finish is rather long, starting off with red plum and raspberry that fade away with strawberry jam over the course of a few minutes.

Overall this was quite enjoyable! The mouthfeel is balanced and supple, the tannins are well-integrated, and the mix of fruit flavors were very tasty. A bit light in the secondary and tertiary flavor department, but that does not detract from the pleasant experience of this bottle. It went well with smoked gouda.

Golden Yellow, not much fruit, Bit of butterscotch on the finish. 5 years may have been a bit too much for this wine. However, paired very nicely with the Burrata cheese with fresh figs and arugula with balsamic vinegar.

Excellent. I couldn't put this down and it got better and better with air. Paired beautifully with pan seared duck breast with a touch of port reduction sauce. A real foul not to have taken notes as this was our only bottle. The fruit here is so beautiful. The nose is sweet-ish strawberry and strawberry and raspberry with moist earth. I got sage and other herbs and darker fruits (yet it was always a medium-bodied wine from PnP through hours of air). Very elegant. It may lean into a New World style, but it does it so well.

Excellent-
What a pretty wine. No notes but from memory - floral with sweet herbs, some smoke and flinty minerality?, something evocative of a field in the sunshine (odd, I know). This is very well composed.

Translucent dark garnet. Spice, cedar, and raspberry basket nose. Medium bodied, sage, dried cherries, earth, fully integrated woody tannins, cardamon, and a dry, medium length finish. Nice; the value seems about right.
