Well balanced and nicely detailed sweet red currants, blackberry, and dark chocolate flavors wrapped in medium to soft tannins that just continue to expand and gain depth towards the long and superb finish. An elegant wine that just kept getting better as the night wore on. |

7/14/2008 - GreenDrazi wrote: 93 pointsDecanted 6 hr’s. Slightly lifted nose of dense black currant, blueberry, vanilla and espresso. Excellent and full mouthfeel from the start with primary flavors of black currant, raspberry, plum, mocha, tar and oak spice notes. Abundant tannins give this plenty of weight with a thick, but fine texture and seem to obscure any acidity. Faint heat towards the full finish. The winemaking and the youthful vines show great promise. This should evolve nicely and hopefully gain in complexity, but I’m not sure the young fruit will outlive the tannins. |

6/8/2008 - GreenDrazi wrote: 93 pointsDecanted 2½ hr’s. Nose of dark currants, tar, game and loam. Silky mouthfeel with meaty, roasted tannins that are forefront now followed by dense flavors of black currants, tar, cedar and the signature Melchor mint. Mineral quality and dark spices increasing towards the finish. Very primary now, this needs time for the fruit to hopefully take a more prominent role. |

6/7/2008 - GreenDrazi wrote: 94 pointsDecanted 7+hr’s. Big nose of meaty red currant, tar, and eucalyptus along with light blueberry, vanilla and white pepper notes. Soft, silky tannins are prominent with flavors of red and black currants, tar, and light game notes. Expands well on the mid-palate with good depth and has an understated oily mouthfeel with a long full finish. Reminiscent of the ’01, but it’s just a bit less in complexity. Needs a lot of decant time now and should open up further with some time in the cellar. |

5/30/2008 - GreenDrazi wrote: 92 pointsDecanted 1 hr. Intensity on the nose with strawberry, cassis, Pinot funk and notes of earth. Followed with layered flavors of dark cherry, cassis, clove, and anise with a nice acidic backbone. Starts soft and quickly builds on the mid-palate with ample tannins revealing a well structured wine leading to an orange peel laced finish. Great now with 1-2 hr’s decant, this should do better with some cellar time. |

5/2/2008 - GreenDrazi wrote: 91 pointsEcanted 2 hr’s. and needed more. Bold, pungent nose of blackberry, raspberry, damp earth and vanilla. Soft attack but a huge presence on the palate with rich blackberry, plum, raspberry and tar flavors clamoring to get in front of the infusion of vanilla and anise spice. Prominent tannins and a big, but slightly hot finish match the rest of the wine. Spritzy quality took a while to blow off. Significant oak presence, this could be cellared for years, but recommend letting sit for another year or 2 to let the spritz subside and then drink young after a lengthy decant. |
