11/24/2023 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 93 pointsThis was in our annual mystery wine allocation from Antica Terra. Classic Rhone nose, very youthful when we opened it. Very long finish. Cork and wine in great shape. Lots of sediment (should have decanted). |

9/3/2023 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 92 pointsDrinking this at Villa Pattono in Piemonte, owned by the Riatti family. Gorgeous when we opened it, 94-95 points, vigorous fruit and tannins. After about an hour, it started falling apart, getting flabby. Other earlier notes suggested it was past its prime. Still lovely but drunk it quickly after opening! |

10/18/2022 - BenSlivka Does not like this wine: 86 pointsBought in 1997, in my cellar for 25 years. Metallic, weak fruit, tannins solid, no joy in this wine. Stark contrast to the 1995 Viader (also 25 years in my cellar) that was joyous. |

10/18/2022 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 93 pointsMy wife wanted some cooking wine, so I rummaged around in CT and found two bottles. We bought this wine for $20 on 10/1/1997 at La Cantina in Bellevue, WA. [We had misfiled it in CT as a 1994 vintage.] Served blind, my wife didn't think it was French, guessed Spain and Italy and then USA. Guessed Santa Barbara, then Napa. It does seem more like an old Spanish wine at this stage than anything else. Still a lot of fruit, a nice finish. A nice balance between fruit and tannin. 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Cabernet Franc. It has been stored in our cellar unmoved for 25y0m/17d. Perfect conditions. I see others have rated this as high as 95 quite recently. I am at 93 due to the oxidation and slight skunkiness. Overall, suprisingly good! 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1986 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Secret Cellar Selection Barrel ReserveDundee Hills more |
10/2/2022 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 91 pointsWe enjoyed this tonight with dinner at Red Hills Kitchen at Atticus Hotel in McMinnville, Oregon. Cork appears to be composite, no bleed. Maybe this was recorked? Or bottled recently? In great shape for a 36 year old Pinot Noir. But very subdued, even after being opened for an hour. No way is this a 97 point wine. Nice structure, nice balance, but not a lot of fruit, and none of the honey or barnyard you would find in a great red Burgundy of this age. So points for holding up this long, but was probably better a few decades ago. |

6/15/2022 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 93 pointsWe discovered this wine at the winery in early 2019. Founded in 1693, they have been in continuous operation. 30% CabSauv, 25% Petit Verdot, 25% CabFranc, 20% Merlot. Lots of oak. Still way too young. Needs another 15-20 years to settle down. But gorgeous now. Decant for hours before drinking. |

5/6/2022 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 92 pointsBought this at a wine shop in Regua on the Douro River. Very expensive! Gorgeous and Harmonious. Way too young -- we had the CF 1992 Reserva from Magnum last night, and it was more austere yet more developed. I would wait at least to 2032 before tasting this again. Wonderful experience. |

2/15/2022 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 89 pointsEnjoying this at Lumen Field. $140 is a bit steep for this wine. A straightforward Oregon Pinot Noir. Lots of Oak and Fruit. A bit of a spicy finish. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1/3/2022 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 92 pointsBought this at release from the winery mailing list. Surprisingly youthful, lots of fruit, very balanced. Violet, cherries. Tannins reserved. A fair bit of sediment in the last 1/3 of the bottle, unusually fine-grained. Our last of 3 bottles. I think can easily go another 10-15 years. We enjoyed with leftover Filipino chicken, pork belly, and potatoes (which our Filipino friend cooked for us in our kitchen last night). |

10/15/2021 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 94 pointsBought at the new City Market in San Miguel de Allende. Oldest apparent wine in their secure Cave, which required three people to accompany me. Walked 400m to dinner at Quince Rooftop, it is almost 6p and still close to 80F. So not the ideal setting for this wine. Still, fruit is very forward and balanced. Midpalate very lush, and long finish. Oak present but very balanced for this 15 year old Mexican 100% Merlot. Nose has hints of horse leather and violets. A little cloudy: probably should have been laid down for a week and then decanted. Still lovely. A good ten years ahead! |

3/7/2021 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis was a gift from a friend. I didn't know anything about the winery or this bottling. We enjoyed it with wild boar racks, roasted potatoes, green beans, and a salad. I thought it was surprisingly good. A blend of Bordeaux grapes + Syrah from eastern Washington. The oak was subdued, if present at all. Nice fruit. A simple, well-made wine. I just looked this up on the web, and Total Wine is offering it for $9.89/bottle if you buy 6 bottles. A bargain! |

12/30/2020 - BenSlivka Likes this wine: 93 pointsWe have been on the Dalla Valle mailing list for a few decades now. This bottle was the last of 6 that arrived in our cellar in 11/2009. It is drinking beautifully right now, very smooth and complex with a long finish. A balanced wine, with tannins, fruit, acids all in harmony. I don't think it will get better, but it will be fine for another 3-5 years. |

12/2/2020 - BenSlivka wrote: flawedCORKED. TCA taint aroma was noticeable from opening, but this is such a powerful wine that it was hard to discern when drinking at first. But after 15 minutes, the TCA "bloomed", and it was a stinker. Very sad, as I just bought this from my favorite winery Saint-Émilion and it arrived last week. The 2011 we had a few days ago from same shipment was gorgeous. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2/26/2020 - BenSlivka wrote: 92 pointsBought a bottle at Dominique Portet Winery in Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia this afternoon (Thursday 27 February 2020). Dominique's brother Bernard selected the site and was the first wine maker. This bottle had come to the Yarra Valley a few years after release, and was stored carefully. Among the 2006, 2008, and 2012 "Andre" releases (named for Dominique's father), several of us thought this was a 2003 or 2005. Very surprised it was a 1974 from Napa Valley in California! Held itself together for a good half hour. Drink now! 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |
