Krondorf

Grant Burge Wines now stands where the Krondorf winery was. 01/03/2002. The newly-opened Barossa Vines Cellar Door has arguably the best view of the Barossa, and owners Grant and Helen Burge are more than happy to share it with the public. The new facility is located at the former Krondorf winery, which was originally established in 1978 by Grant Burge and Ian Wilson before being sold to Mildara Blass in 1986. Burge went on to form Grant Burge Wines in 1988 and 1999 saw him regain the property and make it the centre for his white winemaking operations....

Additional Krondorf Winery Info: The Barossa Valley was settled in the mid 1800s by German Immigrants who brought with them vine cuttings from their homeland. One of the older, traditional wineries in the valley. Krondorf has a rich and varied history. The Krondorf winery was established by one of the pioneering families of this successful state- although it was not called Krondorf until the early 1970's when Grant Burge & Ian Wilson took over, producing quality wine in elegant packaging, this along with excellent product & good promotion saw Krondorf's reputation and sales soar. In 1976, a strong partnership emerged between two young dynamic winemakers. Grant Burge and Ian Wilson. They began their "Burge and Wilson" label and made their first wines at Krondorf Winery, which they later purchased. In 1983, the company went public and two years later was purchased by Mildara. Burge and Wilson stayed on and continued to create their magic, which was cemented when they won the 1980 Jimmy Watson Memorial trophy with a 1979 McLaren Vale, Barossa and Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Burge and Wilson went their separate ways but Krondorf continued upward. Krondorf's main focus, under Mildara's wing now for more than 10 years, is to regionally select grapes available and make top quality consistent styles that remain true to label from year to year. Krondorf is a label to be relied upon always.
