See wine details

verview
Mouthfilling wines with mid-palate richness; lingering plummy fruits: a versatile food wine.

BACKGROUND: Original Estate vineyard; 8,500 vines/HA; specific plot cropping at approx. one tonne/acre, often blended with the best fruit from our Leongatha Vineyard. Wine with attractive, rich fruits in the mid-palate, with the strength to improve up to ten years in the cellar.

MARKET POSITION: Already well-known in Australia & internationally; “Distingished category”, Langtons Classification, 2005; Often rated at 95 >>>98 by Australia's leading critics. An established restaurant favourite. Consistently good value for money. 2016 was rated 98/100 by Halliday.

CURRENT VINTAGE: 2017

The 2017 vintage has delivered red wines with fruit richness, supple texture, firm and balanced tannins: another one of our best vintages. These are great wines from Bass Phillip, and they are all capable of medium, long-term cellaring....... However, they are beautiful to drink now!! All the reds need one to two hours breathing after pulling the cork.

WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS:

"This wine is a good example of the 2017 vintage, with rich fruits, high-toned perfume, full acidity and balanced tannins: a lingering, fruitful finish. This can be enjoyed immediately, but will improve over a considerable time in the cellar. It is probably our best Estate pinot ever made. With 35 to 38 year old vines making up the majority of the fruit, the Estate pinot is regularly delivering improved quality and richness. Reminiscent of Nuits St Georges! Price has gone up, but so has the quality!" (Phillip Jones, April 2019)

INDEPENDENT INDUSTRY REVIEW:

Initially concentrated berries and rose petals, breathing out to show deeper red berry and blueberry compote notes, building in complexity with dried herbs, dry grass-summer field nuances, & a background of spiciness and warmth to the bouquet. Lashings of red cherry coat the mouth: a velvety soft layered and creamy palate with an exuberance of red berry fruits glides across the palate, beautifully balanced, harmonious, energized by crisp, tangy acidity and ripe fine-grained tannins, framed with a dark earthiness and granite-like minerality lingering amongst the tangy red fruits. Concentrated, dense and full-bodied, picking up more weight and texture as it breaths out, invigorating vibrant acidity and spiciness on the farewell with hints of dark chocolate, great length. With all its charm, balance and youthful energy, a most gratifying drink now but really deserves time in the cellar, at least 5 years if you can keep your hands off it. (Curtis March, April 2019)
