Winery Note:

2006 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel - Gold Mine Ranch

A few of you sharp-eyed readers noticed my gaff in the introduction of this vineyard in last year's letter. No, poor Charlie Derrick, who planted these vines in 1914, did not have to go to Calvary (joining other criminals carrying crosses on their backs?). What I should have said was that he joined the Cavalry (of World War I), shortly after establishing this vineyard. Sorry Charlie! Picked September 22nd, the must was cold soaked for 5 days before being inoculated for fermentation. Pressed to all French oak, 20% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Medium-dark ruby. Maraschino cherries, red licorice whips, and just a hint of buttery-goodness greet the nose. Mmmmmm! On the palate, quite full-bodied but with ample tannins and acidity, not at all flabby or oafish. This should age quite well. Begin drinking in mid-2009 and enjoy through 2015.
