September 16, 2022 - Deep dark blackish purple in color with a nose of rich spicy fruits with vegetal qualities and mild vanilla notes lingering in the background. The palate is rich, dry, well-structured, medium full-bodied, and very intense with plenty of residual tannins which gives it a somewhat angular feel and much more alcohol than necessary. The flavor components include dark purple and blue fruits, some spiciness (perhaps from the hight alcoholic content), concentrated black tea, woodland herbs, grippy tannins, mild oak and inky mineral inflections like those derived from igneous rocks. Overall, this quality Sicilian red seemed to be rather reserved and lacking in cohesion given that several of its key component (esp. the fruit, tannins and alcohol) appears to be “doing their own thing” which gives this wine an incoherent feel at the moment. I would like to think that this wine’s best days are still several years away.
