Community Tasting Note

October 27, 2022 - Ok, I gotta call it like I see it. This was HOT HOT HOT. A Grenache cocktail if there ever was one. No, we didn't decant (so I'll take the hit on that for less-than optimal service). But oh lordy was this thing boozy. The brashness of the Stolichnaya-esque entry was enough to stomp on the fruit for practically all of the execution. The initial sip started to give some red berry flavors, but within the next millisecond of consumption, it was all about rave pacifiers and glow sticks. The 15.9% listed ABV felt more like 80 proof. I mean, I love all these stellar CT reviews on this rookie rager, but either my palate was having a delicate snowflake day, or this is just way too Charlie Sheen for my killjoy tastes.

I'm down for an occasional Paso Paris Hilton experience and all, and I still covet my SQN stash, but the delivery here is far too gangster for even me. Not rating, cuz I'd rather not have the CT community completely unleash holy hell on me for skewing the community numeric here.

Best advice, hold until...geeez, I dunno... when Pitbulls actually become domesticated.

10/27/22, 12:47 PM - Lol kosdogger! Thanks... And sorry I don't have better news on this wine in particular at the moment. Hopefully time will heal all wounds and all that :)

10/27/22, 8:12 PM - Honestly..same here. I didn’t post because my bottles shipped when temperatures were below freezing (beyond my control and to my dismay) but ..same here

10/27/22, 9:58 PM - Ah viper that sucks. Sorry to hear that. Unfortunate that this isn’t where it should be (in my humble opinion at least), even in its youth. Sounds like others are pleased with the results, so who knows. A decent portion of the remainder of this bottle went home with a friend, so I’ll have to see if he revisited it on day 2.

10/28/22, 4:58 PM - The one bottle I had so far had a bit of heat on the finish, but not bad. Overall it was pretty tasty.

10/28/22, 5:37 PM - Glad to hear it Mootsie! The bottle we had was in no mood to be tasty in my opinion. Perhaps with a long decant it stood to at least improve a little, but I’d be lying if I didn’t have some concern for the ultimate successful integration of that booze over time. We shall see.

10/28/22, 10:52 PM - Zimmy! You da man! Maybe Paso is becoming too rock and roll for me. I apparently can’t stand the heat….!

10/28/22, 10:56 PM - Unrelated note csimm…I don’t see bedrock wine co on your list..trust me and put them on your radar..I’m very curious of your impression..and no I don’t work for them..not yet anyway haha

10/29/22, 8:26 AM - Hey viper! I’ve had various samples of Bedrock over the years. I have never been much of a Zin fan necessarily, and back in the day the only Zins I was drawn to were from Carlisle and Turley (and some of Justin Smith’s earlier blends). Anyway, Bedrock seemed to come into the picture around the time I slowed down on Carlisle (2007/08?) and most Syrah/Zins, especially from Sonoma. I’ve had recent iterations of Bedrock that were indeed quite good. Old vine Zin done right can be quite compelling.

10/31/22, 11:24 AM - In complete agreement with you on this. Had a couple of sips of this off the pour, and mouth afire, put it down, tried it toward the end of dinner and no real change. Fwiw, for those of us without DEFCON 4 tastes who don’t wish to wait until a decade starting with 203 to drink this, A_M, the wine’s bearer, said it began to balance out on Day 4. Now when that Myriad starts to balance out, who knows . . .

  • csimm commented:

10/31/22, 1:13 PM - A_M said it was drinking “beautifully” on Day 3. So, I suppose there is hope for glory here at some point. I personally don’t think there is a way of totally escaping this always being a bit of a booze hound though. Hope it balances out if nothing else.

10/31/22, 8:45 PM - Me thinks you drank this too soon
    infanticide

  • csimm commented:

    10/31/22, 9:49 PM - Right…. But….

  • sfwinelover1 commented:

11/1/22, 7:32 AM - Bug doc: theoretically yes, but not easy to say when someone else is holding the corkscrew. Then you just have to call ‘em as you see ‘em.

  • bugdoced commented:

11/1/22, 8:08 AM - agree with all the comments
it would be fun to try this again together
and compare with an older year
    cheers

  • csimm commented:

11/1/22, 8:20 AM - bugdoced. Indeed, there is no question this is too young, but I do find it interesting to get a bead on where a wine is potentially heading. Based on the fact one of our CT cohorts reported back it was drinking quite nicely a few days later after half the bottle had been opened during that time is a good sign. Like many wines, I've had them too young, too old, and everywhere in between. Timing is always a challenge in relation to palate preference. I tend to like my wines a bit on the younger, fresher side, but not when they are as boozy as this G2 was. So ya, punchline: Hold for 3-5? years ideally I suppose. Cheers.

  • sfwinelover1 commented:

11/1/22, 8:27 AM - Based on limited data, G2 seems to produce wines more susceptible to heat than (even) other of the C. Coast vineyards. But in terms of Saxum, a ‘14 Heartstone I had 6 months ago which was hot out of the bottle was beautiful with about 4-5 hours of air. Cheers!

11/2/22, 1:30 AM - Fun read. Thanks! Lived in the States a while back (Bmore) and had myself a 07 broken stones. Won me over, but my later experiences don’t bring me back. I have a G2 19 in the cellar (cabinet really). Will leave it be. Haha

  • Teknsteel commented:

11/2/22, 3:12 AM - Not that I mind getting overwhelmed at times.

  • csimm commented:

11/2/22, 4:43 PM - Hi richard... Definitely one to leave alone. I think the mileage will vary for different folks given how brash this was upfront. It will never be a finessed wine, but then again, most people don't buy Saxum for the subtlety.
